Sticking throttle? How I fixed mine.

Paragraph 1- I have had a slight sticking going on in my throttle body for a LONG time. I know it's bad I just now did something about it but truthfully, every time I looked at it I could never find out why it was doing it. What I found was, if you look at the groove where the cable goes, you can see that in the upper right (in the pic that is) it grooves in to a point.



Paragraph 2- In my situation, I would let off the gas and have the throttle stick to about 1500-2000RPM, just a little bit. When I figured out the problem, I noticed that if I opened it by hand and let off of it softly, it would stick about 1/8-1/16" open from the idle screw. If I wiggle the cable, the cable would kind of snap a little and the throttle would close all the way.

Paragraph 3- Basically what was happening is the cable was getting kind of pinched in that groove you see. To fix this, I cleaned it up real good and dropped in a little JB weld in to the groove. I know it sounds kind of ghetto but JB weld will smooth out and lay pretty much flat in to place, this is the main reason I used it.


Paragraph 4- So far this has been a perfect fix for me. If your throttle ever gets stuck to where you have to snap the pedal a little to get it to come back down you may want to look in to this. I know that my other throttle body I had did the exact same thing as well. I have also driven two other truck that have this issue.

Paragraph 5- Oddly enough, the problem did not always exist but when it did it was very annoying. Sorry for the paragraph note had to do it for some members here:lol:

lol, goddamn my humor is as sick as yours.

tytillidie, atleast you know how to drive with a sticking throttle body. people couldn't find the brakes/neutral/parkingbrake or they keys to shut if off.

We had this exact convo at work today... People were saying what can you do? You're at the mercy of the car! I said Duh, nuetral, key off... Car can't "go" if there's no power to the wheels. Idiots!

it's a different thing if you put it in reverse or front just to do a manouvre and it sticks, you only have a few seconds to interact. but the kills where all at open roads i think....

Some of those Toyota's don't have actual keys, they have push button start. To shut them off while driving you either have to push the start/stop button 3 times fast or hold it down for more then 3 seconds. Not many people know that.

I've seen too many guys I drag race with panic when the throttle sticks and run off the end of race tracks. A few haven't been lucky enough to learn from their mistakes... Every car has an ignition switch, a battery cutoff and a shifter within reach. Drivers panic and throw out the parachutes and get on the brakes hard but that won't stop a 1000 + hp motor at 8k rpms. I guess when these people panic they loose sight of the obvious. :dunno:

Will not work on Toyota because throttle is drive by wire but the cheaper Scion line does not seem to be affected because they still use throttle cables on them.

Car & Driver did a test wth a Camry. Made a run to 70 mph and hit the brakes and measured the stopping distance. Same road, same place back to 70 mph, went WOT and hit the brakes with the other foot. Never let off the gas. Took an additional 10 feet to stop the car all the while never letting off the gas.

Just shows how people panic and don't have their head screwed on straight to be able to stop the car. How much do you want to bet that those Volvo's never had an acceleration problem either. I hate the apply brake to shift out of park feature.

They did the same test with a 540hp Rousch Mustang. It took double the distance to stop and the brakes were severely overheated, but it did stop. They did a 3rd car as well but I don't remember which model they used.

Was the cable sticking due to the paint flaking off and "holding" it back? Or just pinching in there? I would have thrown on some axle grease to that area of the cable and see if it stopped it. :dunno:

Was the cable sticking due to the paint flaking off and "holding" it back? Or just pinching in there? I would have thrown on some axle grease to that area of the cable and see if it stopped it. :dunno:

I tried grease first and it didn't work at all unfortunately. I thought that it looked so gummy in there that cleaning it alone would work but it didn't.

Yeah I have a lot hooptie experience, a stuck throttle cable is no sweat. One time me and my wife were leaving Walmart, the main road was about 1/8 mile form where you turn out of the parking lot. I gunned it on the way out, hit about 60 and let off but the truck kept going:rotf: I didn't even get scared, I put in neutral and turned the key back enough to kill the motor but not lock the wheel. I don't get what is so complicated about that.

Mike (back to the thread) I have had the same issue. Will check this, thanks!

As an aside I had my TB off and attempted to match the throttle plates to the bore. Had them very close to perfect. Bolted the TB on the manifold and the were sticking again. Apparently the TB distorts slightly when bolted down. So with it bolted down I loosened the set screws and allowed them to re-align which fixed things. Much better now but will check my linkage also.
