what to look for? future owner

i never had one of these trucks before and i dont know their specific problems so im kinda looking for you guys to lead me in the right direction here.

i have a couple ty's in mind and 1 sy


the #1 im interested in i was told its a 1 owner 85,000 miles i was told there are rust spots on the front fenders. its being driven everyday or at least a lot.

i know enough to look for rot and cracked dash pads and overall condition of vehicle. but what else if a frequent problem?


the sy i say advertised had a bunch of mods and has been off the road a while.it had around 60,000 miles


am i better off buying a stock truck or a modded truck and do my own bolt ons?

There is so much that can go wrong with these trucks! The body work is fixable. The mechanical work is fixable. It really will depend on what your goals are going to be. If you want a reliable driver (like DaveP's unmolested Ty that just drove 36 hours straight through from California to FAST event, and is heading back today/tomorrow for another 36 hr romp), spend time putting it back to new. If you are chasing a timeslip, then remember:

FAILURE TO PREPARE = PREPARE FOR FAILURE

Get a stock truck and get it running perfect. Not good, well, or ok. Perfect. These trucks are fairly impressive in stock form, assuming you've never gone for a ride in a 10 second beast.

Get to know it or you'll blow it

i just found out last night that the stock 1 owner truck got traded into the dealership on a new car 3 days ago now and the truck could of been bought $5500 or less cash and now the dealership wants $8400 oh well nothing i could of done since i didnt have the cash.


looking to trade a 87 t type for a sy or ty if anybody is interested
