ok so this involves a quick story of my sonoma gt

about a year and a half ago i bought my truck for $700
at the time it did not run. about $100 later and a good 4 hours
of buffing waxing cleaning and replacing parts on the upper intake and
it was good as new. i drove the truck with the 4.3 for about a month or more before
storing it for the winter. next spring i took it out and me and my old man replaced the intake gasket to get rid of the only leak. the first day after that the motor blew on my way to work. i spent the duration of that summer working 80 hour weeks to pay for my 406 that is now in the sonoma. finished it in october and drove it for 3 days then put it back into storage just in time for snow. last wednesday i pulled it back out of storage and started to break in the fresh motor. last saturday my tranny burnt out the 3rd and 4th gears. i get my transmission back from the shop tomorrow :D .

so who wants to place bets on how long it takes my rearend to take a shit. seeing as how i havent had much luck thus far. karma's a bitch

I feel for you this is what happened to me the past two years.
Last year at tax time went to take truck to shop to pull engine for cam replacement and reverse goes out.

pulled engine out of truck to install new cam but found out it needed a complete overhual. Stock engine #1

Rebuilt stock engine and went with a complete Comp Cams valve trian Edelbrock headers and intake, MSD pro-billet distributor, altogether with tranny: COST $5500

475miles later engine is knocking due to machine shop leaving sand and metal shaving in block from cleaning and boring Engine #2

Machine shop refuses now to back thier garentie on thier work and destoys all records that I even had work done thier other than my copy of the work order.

Truck set for a year wieghting for funds

Got low mileage stock engine (50,000mile)and put bolt on's for proir engine on get 100miles and eengine starts knocking  Engine #3

pulled engine and got exchanged for a 49,000 mile engine put bolt ons on agin (ARG!) engine running great!

156 miles later, rearend started banging and shaking and I was told by 3 places that the rearend was toast so I babied it home@10mph 22miles

Scored a rearend for $318 with 3.73's and it only had 500miles on it

then found out one of my lowering blocks got the pin sheared off the top of it

WHEN WILL THE MADNESS STOP!!! :rotf: This is just with one vehical (95 S-10) not including any other vehicals I have that I have the same luck with. I think at this piont I will be willing to trade you luck.

Re: whats gunna blow next

well a couple of problems with beating it to the punch
biggest being money
to do what i want with back half
meaning four bar suspension narrowed frame and narrowed 12bolt posi rear end
i dont have the money. im only 18 and still in highschool paying for everything with the little
money i do save from working 35 hour weeks on top of school
and all that i did save up is now in my tranny

other problem is that in september i leave for the marine corp so sitting around with my thumb up my ass for another summer is out of the question when i might not see my truck for a few years. needless to say tho my paychecks over the next four years will be completely finishing and restoring my truck

and to the other guy with a horse shoe up his ass backwards just like me
no thanks ill stick to my shitty luck until someone better comes along willing to trade

Over/Under is 500 miles, its a known weak link...neither of those tranny/rear end surprise me.

Dont put slicks or DRs on the truck nor put weight in the bed for traction and the 7.5 will last suprisingly long even if you beat on it. No traction will be the diffs savior but as soon as you start hooking up while flogging it the rear will scatter in no time.

I beat a 7.5 diff so hard I scattered a couple T5s and it never once gave me trouble. It did have an Auburn posi instead of a gov lock. We're talking 7k RPM 1-2 power shifts, 1 minute + long burnouts, and just your every day abuse that a vehicle in which a normal owner would give it if they hated it. I didnt hate it I just drive like that normally  .

To sum it up:
No traction=the diff living
Traction=you carrying the diff home in pieces.

I'd just drive it.

I can't imagine you get all that great of traction with a built engine.

The first time you have traction, you better have a friend with a flatbed to take it home. There are a couple of companies that make 12 bolt rearends that are even better than the factory 12 bolt with prices around $1700.00 brand new made to fit your truck.

Re: whats gunna blow next

Good to hear. You can take it easy, if you don't do anything stupid these trucks last quite a while. Just don't try to race a Mustang from a dig on the way back from the home center with 3 bags of mulch in the back, and you'll be fine.
