What is the ZQ8 suspension :
- 16" rims off of 1991 and 1992 Camaros (with different center-caps)

- The ZQ8 will pull .84g on the skidpad
- It is comparable to the handling of the Mustang GT, Z28, and the Trans AM
I don't think the rims are exact Camaro rims. IIRC, the back spacing is different, and the center caps aren't interchangeable. The .84 g's number must come from an automatic truck. I'd be willing to bet the 5 speed trucks will hold closer to .9 on factory radials. Even at factory ZQ8 height my truck simply doesn't have any body roll.

Motor Trend actually managed to get a ZQ8 equipped S10 SS through the 600 foot slalom 3mph faster than a C5 Corvette, hence my comment that the ZQ8 suspension doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Horsepower is the only thing the ZQ8/Xtreme S10's are really lacking. This day and age, I'd probably opt for an LS1/T56 combo Xtreme over a SyTy.

Enough of my ZQ8 promoting though. They're too damn slow in a straight line.

it has a list price of $1005 (without rims or hop damper)

What's worse is if you take a ZQ8 into GM for warranty work on the suspension, they'll actually pull the hop damper off and throw it away. I've know a few guys the stealership robbed, and they both claimed the hop shock actually was effective.

My truck's long out of warranty, but I'd crack some skulls if I found out they were taking parts off my truck and throwing them away for no reason. (GM "claims" the hop hock is ineffective, so it's their policy to discard them if they seem worn).

Got LS1?
Re: zq8 QUESTION

Finally some good info on the ZQ8's. I assume by all this talk about the ZQ8 steering box that it's possible to swap the S10 ZQ8 RPO code 12.7:1 steering box into a Sy/Ty, but I'm wondering if that holds true to a 4wd S-truck? Is the only modification a pitman arm swap from old 4x4 S-truck box to ZQ8 box, or is this too good to be true?

yes you can. Most gm steering boxes are interchangeable. All the ones that LOOK the same, are interchangeable - just gotta research the guts and put the appropriate pitman arm on it.

I even just picked up a 16:1 circle track box for my Ty...wanna try that out over the ZQ8.

Re: zq8 QUESTION

I can confirm the zq8 box being better than the original box. I had a 95 s10 ext cab and I bought the zq8 package from gm performance parts and installed it. I also ordered the wheels and put on goodyears. It came with a new steering box. Night and day on the suspension performance. I even put on the hopshock which did not come with the kit. My truck was a 5speed with the 4.3 so it needed the traction help. I always wanted to put int a lt4 or ls1 but never had the money back then.

Re: zq8 QUESTION

Soooooooo, not to convolute this thread even further or anything but does anyone know how the ZQ8 compares to the AGR steering box as far as performance L2L? I know the AGR is crazy expensive but is it quicker or no?

I'm on their site right now and it's listed as having a 12.7:1 gear ratio which they claim to be "the fastest available". Has anyone here put that to the test?

Well, if all things were equal, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the AGR and ZQ8 apart.

The quickest available is the 1988 Monte Carlo SS YA box (it really is 1988 only). It's 12:1 which results in 2.5 turns lock to lock. Like I said earlier though, I don't know the slighest about interchangeability or what goes in to installing this box.

There are a few guys on s10forum.com who have done the swap, so over there would probably be the best place to enquire about the MC/SS YA swap if you were interested.

I think the ZQ8's ratio is perfect for what I do. It tracks awesome on sweeping turns at almost triple digits, but like Loeryder said, if you autoX you probably want the quickest response you can get.

Thanks for that. I went to s10forum.com and found a thread which had this link. Monte Carlo SS YA box

I like that link...

So would any of these 12.7 boxes work?

Heck it even shows 1992-98 Grand Cherokee Fast Ratio Power Steering Gears. I know the steering shaft part is right and they are held to the frame with 3 bolts.... HMMM...

Look at the 1987 thru 93 Camaro w/FE2 Level IV. 32 degrees of travel... HMMM...
