What would you do with $5,000 give or take?

Re: What would you do with $5,000 give or take?

I have thought about doing the Ty daily driver, so this what I would do or look at if I owned one and was going to press it into daily driver duty.

-Scan tool & typical SyTy tune up (should be done for SyTy even if 100% stock, same goes for the scan tool) Get the truck running perfectly on the scan tool.
-Check you radiator hoses, fliud, & see if the clutch fan still works.
-Ditch the Crossver tube. Higher mileage truck are begging for them to break apart and ruin the turbo. I have thought about doing a mini battery and adding second battery.

-Tranny Cooler.
-Quality tranny rebuild- If you tranny is going out and you going to keep the stock turbo, I think you can get a way with a quality rebuild. You in CO, knock on Hartman doors or call up Blake for a rebuild.
-Upgraded propshaft. I couldn't not do a boost launch.
-Motor mounts, see above
-change Front Rear Diff, Transfer case fluids.

-Rebuild front suspension (balljoints and idler arm particulary), ZQ8, upgraded steering shaft would be nice.
-Shocks
-Rear Sway bar. They should have come with one, stock.
-LS1 brakes- the stockers totally suck, they are a liability.
-Flush brake fluid

I will be printing this list for future reference.

It'll go into my already long "to do" list...

On a side note, I did find a Turbo Starion for $3500 today. Might have to talk to the wife and make a call. ... oh, wait... you need the money in hand for that sort of thing. :( :rotf:

In college, my friend had a 89 Conquest, it was a money pit. He bought it in 1992, in immaculate with 40K from a lady owner and babied it. He had problems with the injectors, rear differential (replace it twice), rear adjustable shocks (3 times), and rear quarter rust (in the middle from the baclk side) despite it being garaged and he never drove it in the winter. I don't know how the pricing is now on replacement parts, but eh little stuff was expensive for that car.

I've never had to do anything expensive on the Saab... heck, replacing the convertible top cost more than a new tranny, and that was ~$1700 .. hardtops don't have that problem. Where's VermontTy when you need him ;)

 Thanks! That's a good list, and I've at least started on it. Even if we do get another car, I'll be working toward that. I'm keeping my truck basically stock, engine/turbo wise. I just want it to drive nice and be mostly reliable. If it's completely reliable, it's not a Typhoon anymore.

Is this really a concern? I still have mine. Should I ditch it asap? That means relocating the battery and changing the mostly stock appearance of the engine bay. :(

Absolutely. The high heat of the engine bay makes them extremely brittle on the end. A piece of mine did break off and go through the turbo... but I got lucky and it barely messed up one blade, and I mean barely. I'm trying to find another option, but I know it needs to go. It currently has duct tape wrapped around the end so no other pieces break off while I'm working on my truck.

I know it's not a very good solution, but it was all I could do when I did it.

IMO they get really brittle up around 125K miles. Also the oil change goons tend to over tighten the air box side as well. I see them FS all teh time, I personally would buy one with 100K mile on it. VermontTy drop his 130K mile and it shattered into a bunch of peice

My best recomendation: CLEARS.....for the ty.

Seriously, I would but a turbo omni if I were in your position. If its too ugly for you to be seen in, then I have hook ups on window tint. If you spent 2k on a daily driver, you would have a good 3k to start on the ty. I personally believe if you spend your money wisely you can make a good mild ty with 3k.

Mine was brittle at both ends 53,000 and the turbo end fell off in 1 piece when I loosen the clamp to install the kenny bell air intake.

OK back on track. I got tired of typing yesterday. So here it goes.

17.Transmission remote filter kit: $28.95 http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BMM%2D80277&N=700+115&autoview=sku

18.Braided stainless steel hose kit for above install:

19.Remote transmission cooler: $215.88 http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BMM%2D70297&N=700+400004+115&autoview=sku

20.New aux gauge panel that mount where cup holders are: (Similar to the old kenny-bell setup) I'm still working on this. Mine will have a space at the top to mount my Ulimate on. (Its the radar style)

21.The following gages to mount in above:

Boost Gage: $54.95 http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+4294925228+400827+4294822101+4294891600+4294908420+115+4294893549

Transmission Temp: $49.95 http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+4294925228+400827+4294822101+4294891600+4294905502+115+4294908432

22.Hood: $499.00 http://www.up22.com/S10.htm#GM804B

23.Gilbert prop shaft:

24. 3" Stainless Exhaust from turbo back:

25. 3" Cat

26. Hi-temp Coating on the stock exhaust manifolds and crossover:

There is more I would do and quite a bit of this is done on mine as I'm still working on it. I should note that I would not do the work in this order. As I didn't (I would start with all the reliability upgades 1st including the prop shaft.)

Do what I did you dont even have to move the battery, I bought one of these http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=AFC-50301&N=700+115&autoview=sku and cut it up a little and the inner fender then bolted it all in works great, it just moves the battery down and puts it at angle where you can fit the air filter right over it. heres a pic
