What would you do with $5,000 give or take?

phoonTy

Truckless. For now.
My wife and I are currently looking to get another car. We were carpooling to save cash while I fixed what I could on the Typhoon. I had intended to make the Typhoon more of a weekend cruiser and relieve it from it's DD duties... but I miss driving it!

So, I'm thinking, why not take that $5,000 we would spend on another car and dump it into the Typhoon...

We are currently borrowing one of my dad's trucks, so the Typhoon doesn't have to be perfect, or back on the road yet...

I'm not looking to have a street racer/performance monster. I'm looking for reliability/driveability stuff. That being said, what would you do to a basically stock Ty with $5,000 to throw at it to make it a better DD?

I've done soft IC lines, have an AFPR waiting to go on, Johnson IC pump (hotwired), Lowered 1", Jeep Steering shaft waiting to go in. Poly control arm bushings waiting to go in. I'm going A/C delete too. I got used to no A/C while my fan didn't work, so that doesn't bother me.

I'm Considering:
- New Trans - probably stocker (I think mine is on it's way out - will know when it's back on the road)
- Walbro255 - haven't done it yet, want too!
- New shocks all the way around - KYB's?
- Refinish stock wheels
- Paint cladding? what would be the price of a good paint job on cladding?
- coil overs - worth the trouble?
- ABS delete? (gotten used to it with our Volvo and it's not working abs module. )

This isn't set in stone, but if I can make it even more reliable than it has been, I'd go back to daily driving it instead of getting another car/another insurance payment, etc.

Time to get my baby healthy and back on the road!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm thinking about the same scenario with mine. Mainly brakes & steering components.

Good list. I'd add solid mounds, both sides. There's a gazillion post on this but it's not as hard as it sounds. Also a Gilbert shaft. Battle Bars maybe?

Have fun

Re: What would you do with $5,000 give or take?

When i bought my sy it was to be a DD, but i soon realized that the money i saved in gas money alone paid for my other car pmnt and gas. I have a civic now and the Sy for fun, but i have 2 cars for what i was paying to drive one all the time. If you had another DD you could still drive the TY when you wanted. A cheap honda ($2-4k) is easy to find and will help you Ty live longer, and save you money too. My civic with big stereo and all gets around 35mpg, not premium either, so depending on how much you drive you can easily see the $ savings in gas costs alone. you can take the extra $1-3k left over and spend that on the TY

just my opinion.

Buy another car and do the ty when you can do all you want...motor, 4l80e, new wheels, paint job etc.

Give her a good tune-up, maybe do a fuel pump and call it good.

:stupid: I do the same thing. With the money I save on gas plus the money I get for expenses it works out well.

With the spectre of near $4 gas, a Ty is probably not a good DD choice. Particularly if you cover a lot of miles.

Buy a litttle go car... save the Ty for fun.

Find an old Omni GLHS... get your turbo fix, and the gas mileage. Or a Mini Cooper S.

Re: What would you do with $5,000 give or take?

For shits and giggles,

1250 miles a month x 12 =15000 a year. close to average miles per person.

1250/15mpg(SY)=about 83 gal gas a month
83 gal x $3.30 (gas price here for premium) = $274 a month

1250/35mpg(honda)=about 36 gal of gas
36 x $3.10 = $112

274-112= $162 a month in gas alone

If you buy an older DD you can easily stay under the gas saving in a monthly car payment and use the 5k on the TY or buy the DD with the 5k and have extra $ every month to fix what breaks on the TY.

I say it now, but it could change: "Gas prices don't scare me. You gotta pay to play." and $4/gallon beats $7/liter that some pay.

Like I said, this isn't set in stone. I'm just weighing options here.

We've already got a Volvo 850GLT Turbo... but 4psi isn't a turbo fix. Maybe I'll call on the Shadow that's for sale for $2,000... unless someone knows of an unmolested Volvo 850-R close to them.... so many options!

Re: What would you do with $5,000 give or take?

$5k isn't enough to make a Ty a daily driver IMO.

Assuming you need to go through the suspension, brakes, steering and stay mostly stock on those parts, you don' t have enough leftover for an 80E.

Stock trucks break transmissions. Even lightly driven trucks break transmissions. If you HAVE to have the truck to get to work on Monday morning, you need the 80E.

My list would go as follows for a DD Ty (it's more than $5k):
- 80E
- 255 pump
- AFPR
- Tuning/Monitoring tools
- vacuum lines
- rebuild/service on any/all brake components
- rebuild service on any/all steering/suspension components
- enough self control to not futz with the boost level
- propshaft

Taking into account the higher levels of maintenance required to keep one of these on the road (quarterly ignition replacement, more frequent oil changes with higher grade oil, etc), and the higher price of gas. It really makes bad sense to try and justify one as a daily driver.

I agree with the get another car idea. The money you will save keeping the Ty off the road will more than help save up for fun stuff later. Do the tuneup, fuel pump and whatever else cheap and similar to that and get another vehicle.

Well out of your list i have:
- AFPR - sitting under the hood, awaiting install
- Datamaster/Turbo-link w/laptop & cable
- Vacuum lines were done in 2002 or '03 (can't remember now) with one of Ian's kits
- Greddy Profec B Boost controller... set at 14psi according to T-Link/DM

I also do plugs/wires/cap & rotor once a year since I've owned it.

So I'm short on the rebuild stuff, propshaft, 80E of course, and 255....

I guess I'm daydreaming because if I don't get it on the road, or at the very least, start it up soon, it'll be a year since I haven't driven/started it  But my Typhoon Love/Hate relationship is going strong.

Thanks for the input and wake-up guys. As always, much appreciated.

....hummm, your in Colorado where the sun shines 350+ days....so <grin>
-Buy a Motorcycle (60 mpg); and use the $5K - $3K = $2K to
-install a tranny cooler, larger pan, and lubeguard (for tranny protection)
-Rear Diff/Girdle Cover, hd propshaft and caltracs or such (for driveline protection)
-160 Thermostat, blade of death, and maybe spal fans (for IC/Cooling)
-Good set of plugs, cap, wires, and laptop tuning/troubleshooting software (for engine protection)
-Fuel pump, Afpr, msd, coil, and proper guages (for engine operation)
-A good all weather cover, and moth balls/dyer sheets to ward off critters (for exterior)
Plus you`ll be able to save money on insurance as it`ll be used on weekends/shows only.

Get another car!! Without a 80e your Ty will break and it will be when you are out of money.
Get a Motorcycle or a cheap easy to work on car i.e. Honda. Save Gas money, miles on the ty, and ware and tare.

Just my :2cents:

yeah... don't think I'll be doing that one. The Ty and the Volvo are paid for. There won't be any repo there. I have yet to have a car payment in my life... life is too short to spend it all paying for a car I will never really own.
