#0720's Underhood makeover!

So what started as a simple efan install and turbo removal has exploded into what you see now.

A little background on what had been happening since I got the truck was that I would see a trail of smoke while under medium acceleration. I started a thread and started taking things apart and eventually figured out my 2 yr. old turbo is fine. The 17 yr old PCV valve was stuck open and was literally spraying oil down the intake. Somewhere in the middle of all of this I caught the "while I'm there" syndrome and the rest is history

The whole reason I'm in this mess

The plan in mind for this thing is

*Replace 160,000 mile timing chain - DONE
*Matt Blum rebuild of throttle body - DONE
*Relocate battery to the back
*ABS delete - DONE
*Delete EGR - DONE
*Relocate MAP sensor to firewall - DONE
*Relocate coil - decided to keep in stock location
*Remove remote oil filter assembly and install an in-block filter - DONE
*replace every rubber hose - DONE
*Paint frame with Rustoleum Gloss black - DONE
*thermal wrap crossover and downpipe
*practically re-gasket the entire truck
*New water pump, PS pump, alternator, GM High Torque mini starter - all puchased
*Polish as much aluminum as possible
*Blast and powder coat everything else!

Disassembly begins

Timing chain

This thing had about 5/8" of slack
DSCF3467.jpg

This is the first time I've actually had to drop the pan on a timing chain in a 90* motor, all the timing covers on my small blocks just slip right in, that took a while

Top end finally removed, damn injectors fought with me the whole time,

How it sits as of tonight, all too familiar to most of you I'm sure

Good luck . I pulled mine apart a few winters ago. Was jus removing rusty and crusty EGR. It can get outta hand sometimes. Did the polishing myself not show quality but always gets attention.

Welcome to the snowball effect (makes me not want to open my hood). If you have OCD (as I suspect all SyTy owners do) then you are in trouble.Good luck.

Re: #0720's Underhood makeover!

your doing good but if you had it real bad you would have sandblasted and painted/powdercoated the timing cover

Dropped off the lower and upper intake, valve covers and accessory brackets at the machine shop to get hot tanked, I'm waiting to borrow my dad's truck so I can go pick up my new blast cabinet :D

I hope you mean "cold" tanked as the hot tank ruins aluminum

Got some more work done

Supplies

Spent another hour with a die grinder/ wire wheel and removed most of the visible rust. Painted the engine and most of the manifold with that high heat crap. I wasn't even going to touch the manifolds but for another $9 I think its worth finding out if it will at least hold until I can ceramic coat them with the Tech Line stuff

Its amazing what a bottle of simple green and a pack of microfiber towels will do to the firewall and a/c box. I went over what I could reach with polishing paste and the firewall looks as good as the outside (What's visible at least)

Polished the A/C line

Cleaned and painted the the rusty booster and master cylinder reservoir

I finally got my powder coating gun, blasting cabinet and 25 lbs of aluminum oxide and went to go pick up a $40 craigslist oven. I'll be ordering my powders tomorrow

Stay tuned

I scuffed it down with a red scotch brite and cleaned it with acetone and sprayed what I could. I'm going to throw some header wrap on it, just need to buy some stainless straps for it

So I finally found a use for the space my ex-wife left me when she took the washer and dryer. Bought a blast cabinet, powder coating gun and a $40 craigslist oven.

Re: #0720's Underhood makeover!

So I scored a second oven thanks to my dad. He says he found it in one of the storage sheds at work and gave it to me. The original cord looked like it had been chewed through.

DSCF3515.jpg

Since this is a 220V electric, I'll be putting this one where the dryer was.

Got a new dryer cord at home depot, a little splicing
DSCF3518.jpg

and good as new
DSCF3519.jpg

Now we're talking
DSCF3521.jpg

DSCF3523.jpg

Tore apart a brand new fluorescent exit sign I had laying around and riveted it to the blast cabinet

DSCF3526.jpg

New layout. The larger oven is a gas one. I'll be buying a natural gas conversion kit designed for outdoor grilles and tap into the water heater gas line

DSCF3534.jpg

DSCF3530.jpg

When I bought my powder coating gun I bought a pound of matte black so I tried it on a piece of scrap tubing. Looks pretty awesome and the powder looks like it goes a long way

DSCF3529.jpg

DSCF3528.jpg

Finally finished the ABS delete and noticed I missed a spot behind the shock tower. heh.
