Re: #0720's Underhood makeover!

I may powder coat the intake housing but not the exhaust right now. I don't have the time, I need to start driving this thing asap. I've had my mom's car for a month already and she needs it back, I told her I only needed it 3 days  The local coating shop has like a 3 week turnaround. I can't wait that much

Oh and the overflow is Dorman 603-001

Big update coming soon :D

Your doing a great job. looks really good. Since the turbo is apart, you might as well through some new wheels in it....:2cents:

Re: #0720's Underhood makeover!

so all thats needed is this fitting for the block to delete the factory "leak lines"

Yup, that's all that's needed and you can use a PF42 filter. Its a little tight with the propshaft in the way, but if you change your oil with the engine cold, its a piece of cake

Ya but he didn't take the entire truck apart and forget how to put it back together.....

The last time I did that it turned into a 6 year ongoing project and I'm still not finished .

So the coating shop wanted me to pay $95 for just the exhaust side and wait two weeks. **** that! Did it myself in about 3 hours. I used mirror black on the compressor housing and Flame Proof on the turbine housing.

What do you guys think? I still need to take off the masking tape residue off the inlet

Small update, i've been driving it for about a week before I parked it again so these pics are about a week old, i'll take some new ones later now that I got batteries for this thing

3" exhaust coupler and a PCV nipple
DSCF3711.jpg

Drilled and tapped the coupler and powder coated it all

GM gear reduction starter off a 97 454 fullsize, a mod worth its weight in gold

15 ft. of 1/0 welding cable with the terminal crimped, heat shrunk and wrapped in that thermo stuff

Installed
DSCF3722.jpg

"While I was there" I cut off about a foot of the crispy, burnt purple wire and wired it into the relay. No more "click-click-click"

Air filter now where the battery used to be
DSCF3728.jpg

Shot of the turbo, I should add that the hot side DID discolor but the paint hasn't flaked off or anything, its better than seeing rust on it

DSCF3729.jpg

I broke the boost control solenoid so I added a manual boost controller temporarily. Anyone have a spare one laying around they'll let go for cheap?

Now for the bad. It still smokes, the catch can its doing its job, just a slight hint of oil so now I'm positive its the valve guides and/or stem seals. I did a compression test and they were all at 150 with cyl #4 was at 143-145 and I get no blowby at the dipstick or at the oil cap so I'm confident its not the rings.

I should also mention that it comes and goes. When it sits for several hours it'll smoke like a chimney for about 3 minutes and after that only when I'm accelerating hard. When I drive normal I'll get a puff while taking off from a stop, other than that its not noticeable. Any ideas?

That came together nicely. but you are probably looking at the valve guild seals in the heads. What is the mileage on the motor? and remember, if its still the original motor they are 17 years old and probably shot....:2cents:

Hi, remember this thing??

I tore it down to do the valve stem seals, that didn't fix it. After that I was so sick of working on it I've left it alone for weeks, until the other day that I started tearing it down. All I had left to change was the turbo and ultimately, the shortblock, so I went with the less expensive option and I think (hope) I found the problem

Coked oil

The journals have scored the turbine wheel pretty good, I can feel the difference with my fingernail

DSCF3934.jpg

You can sort of see the step in this one

DSCF3939-1.jpg

I bought this kit, but it looks like I'm going to have to find some oversized journals and have the turbine ground. If I can't find any I'll have to shell out for a whole new turbine wheel, about $200 :(

More oil coking goodness

DSCF3942-1.jpg

I'm starting to think I actually signed this turbo's death certificate by putting good oil on there. The engine was sludgy and when I started using full synthetic I'm guessing it loosened up too much of it and started clogging things and starved the turbo

I'm thinking of getting an inline oil filter once I get this thing rebuilt.
