Re: 0539

Ok...so finally some progress! :D

It is kind of a long story but I decided to do the truck properly and do it once. After 2 years or so of owning it and reading up on stuff I knew where I wanted to go - built bottom end and a 4L80E and that way I can really turn the power on eventually.

The problem has been my career as I was going to study medicine and needed to save. For a while I was going to mothball the car until later on but I decided I am not really that keen to go back to school.

So I have been researching, and accumulating parts for the last 4 months or so and last Thursday all the stuff arrived apart from some key items, but they can wait.

So...the plan!!

Engine:

4.030" JE Pro Pistons, Eagle Rods, M Select oil pump, C&A gapless rings, 4 bolt mains, ARP stud kits, edelbrock chain, 415 cam, RPM vortec heads/lower intake, alkycontrol kit, 50# injectors, PROMinator chip. Engine work being done over xmas by Arnetts in Doncaster. My friend had great luck with the TVR engine he blue printed

I am holding off on the turbo/dp/wastegate/BOV combo for a couple of years seeing as I need to get it running good first and B I am running out of the green stuff!

Transmission: 4L80E - Prime Gears Kit and installation kit, a built unit I got from a guy here in the UK, GM Automatics Ltd Dagenham, Essex, 2800 stall torque converter and a PCS computer - still missing the converter and the computer. Also got the HD prop shaft from George - very nice stuff there mate!

Body - going in for a frame off restoration. The guy has taken it onboard and I have provided him with all the new rubber for weatherstrips etc to produce a new car almost as well as some mods like the tail lights. I think I will eventually put a roof rack on it but we shall see - my spoiler will look good though!

Miscellaneous - stock arm coilover from Turbo Time, ZQ8 box and an upgraded steering shaft. I already have the OZ Monte Carlos from attackdog

There is probably other stuff but I maybe forgot.

My shipment arrived on Thursday and it was like Christmas 2!!!

This is the state of the car now!!

Basically, the engine and trans will be done by the New Year, then I can build the engine up before dropping it back in.

The trans will go in with the engine in May when I get back from Afghanistan after the body shop is done. Incidentally, I am sticking with Diamond White/ Grey so it is almost stock colours but sharper. Windows are getting blacked out as well...

Re: 0539

I have got 2 months at work once I am back then I have 5 month of paid leave as I am leaving the Army next year. There are some pros to being in still though... like the facility below totally for my use!!

I am so lucky, but basically once I drop the engine in, the truck will be moved up to my base and I can put the trans in with the help of the lift etc. There are loads of soldiers interested to see what is going to happen with this as well. Basically though, I plan to work most evenings and weekends on the truck while I also look for jobs. Who knows, I may move to the USA once I am out!

This is where I will be working though......

Trans work if necessary - I got some hi lift stands anyway but I think I am covered!!

DSC00044.jpg

So I am back to the waiting game now. Trans to be done, engine to be done and the car to be done!

Re: 0539

There is so much good info and I have been so impressed by the projects on here - gjp, Tooky and Marty (Syborg Twin Turbo) and jjorgensen52 - I can't name everyone that does cool stuff - so while I am terrified of this, I am really enjoying the thought of what I will have at then end.

Hope this is entertaining to someone! :D

Re: 0539

Good luck man! My truck has been on jackstands for 6 months and I have been piling up boxes of parts for my full suspension upgrade and all that nonsense. Your situation look very familiar to mine! Seeing these project threads makes me wish I took pics from the start of my project. Oh well. Keep the updates coming. Looks like you have a nice place to work on the Ty!

Re: 0539

Got a quote on the engine build:

stripping/inspecting
boring .030" over
facing
cleaning
4 bolt mains drilling/aligining
reassembly

Total: £1053 / $2100

Done by early Jan - waiting on oil pump :(

Re: 0539

Just discoverd that the UK is not a good place to get a V6 balanced. This could prove tricky. Is there a formula for our engines or anything special?

Keep hitting walls... :banghead:

Re: 0539

if you safe yourself that build, only 5k to go ;)

i know of a shop in the nl that balances, and prolly builds that engine for less.

Re: 0539

Re: 0539

Yeah but it is in the shop now, and how much is it going to cost me to get my engine to NL and back?

UK sucks. I am applying for jobs in the US when I get back from Afghanistan! A big house with a garage like jjorgensen/ marty :D

Re: 0539

UPDATE as at 6 Dec 08.

Have made some progress over the last few weeks. My transmission has been built and will be arriving in the next few days. 4L80E here we come! The rebuild kit from George seriously impressed the builder so I am looking forward to having a bullet proof trans. Pics to follow.

I ordered a 2800 stall and also the PCS controller.

After much investigation I concluded that external wastegate was the way to go for the time being until the stock chip is improved / wastegate setups are better.

I have therefore got a Greddy Profec Spec B II External Boost controller from eBay and the dp and w/g from RPM.

The engine has been in the shop getting machined but I have come up against a couple of snags - really small annoying things that just irritate me!

First off is the oil pump - I have bought a total of 3 M Select 10553s from Summit, but have not received one. First one missed my shipment so is sat in a warehouse waiting on the dp. tc and TCU.

Second one went to Las Vegas and UPS delivered it to the wrong hotel so my friend didn't get it. So I ordered a 3rd on 22 Dec and turns out they are on back order until 15 Jan. Very very frustrating.

The second one is the balancing. People in the UK are unfamiliar with V6 balancing so it took some ffort to find someone pprepared to do it. As soon as I found someone, turns out the harmonic balancer is broken and I need a new one. Guess what else we don't have in the UK? ...Yep.

So the machine shop is waiting on the balancer and the oil pump. Dammit.

That aside, the machining has gone well as far as I can tell.

The 4 bolt mains have been installed and then the block will be getting ready for line boring and finally honing.

The machinist praised the billet main caps from RPM and said they were very accurately made and done to a high standard. Nice one Mike

Interstesting numbers for you: the stock main caps are made from mild steel with a tensile strength of 20 tonnes per square inch, whereas the stuff I am using from RPM is in the region of 35-40 tonnes per square inch according to the machinist. That should keep the crank from breaking loose!

This isn't my crank but I liked the machine.

Some cool stuff arrived today:

DSC00172.jpg

Not very exciting but still very important!!

DSC00178.jpg

PCS - Ordered and shipped
TC - ordered - John?
Lots and lots from E-RUE and RPM on the way!!

Off to Afghanistan in 14 days so I will be able to pay for all these goodies! :D

The bad news:

DSC00176.jpg

I got a master cylinder/servo off the same truck as the trans but I guess it is not the right kind for us. Hydroboost from the US here we come!

This is getting exciting - anyone else get turned one by shiny cold metal? :silly:

Will your trans computer let you do the paddle shift thing?

You've gotta trim all those ears off the trans or it won't clear the floor pans.

Re: 4L80E arrived today

When I do my builds the balancer does not go on the crank during balancing. Make sure you check whatever balancer you choose to use bc all of the perf ones I use are not to be used during the balancing process. they come from the factory neutral balanced. and yes the V6 does have a special arrangement for balancing, it's not the same formula as a v8 sbc.
