Wow nice pictures! Your crank has turned blue! :) Very cool to see. Now I'm wondering what nitriding would look like.

PS: You got a double post there at 1:55 AM and 2:01 AM

Re: 4L80E arrived today

more pics, this time from the USA.

Matt Blum is doing the work to my throttle body - 48-52mm I think as well as reducing the leakage that haunst so many SyTy owners. Looks clean - can't wait for the final product!

Just waiting on my AC from the US to arrive in Afghanistan so I can take it back to the UK. I leave in 12 days. What are the bets on it not getting here in time... :(

I hope I get to make this truck drive again......

This is all the work that has been done in the 3 months I have been away. To top it off, my truck is full of dust and I think he has chipped the cladding on the driver's side front arch.....

I am not impressed. Thankfully, the engine is almost done and that guy has been brilliant. See pics above.

Matt Blum has finished my throttle body and some pics of it are below. Wish I had a pic of the old nasty one I bought.

Blasted this week and then powder coated the end of the week potentially.

Body getting painted in the next week, windows getting tinted and the engine getting completed as well. I get back in 5 days! Perfect timing!

Questions - will the Comp Cams 7.200 push rods I got be ok on the Vortec heads? I notice Tooky had 7.1875. The ones I have are fractionally longer than stock. Haven't got the roller rockers yet but am going for the 1.52s from summit / comp cams Pro Magnum.

How are people getting the studs into the block at the right torque settings? The studs have an allen key at the tip but I can't see that being able to tkae the 65ftlbs that ARP recommend with their sealer.

Is there a tool? I may end up just using two nuts on the threads - not pretty but will work I guess. What do people do?

Great thread.... love the pics!
Thanks for the service over there  ... hope you have a great time being home - are you home for good now??

As far as the stud torque.... I'm pretty sure there are a few threads that talk about the proper procedure... I think I put a link into the ARP spec sheet on this one...
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=49412&highlight=arp+head+studs

studs are just hand tight into the block (4 ft lbs). Don't forget the sealant, etc.!

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Thanks man! Glad you like the pics and I appreciate your help!

I am back for another 3 weeks then I have a 4 month tour in Iraq :(. I volunteered for it though so only me to blame!

The sealant is the stuff in the sachet right? Or is that just the ARP moly lube? Searching...! :D

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Re: 4L80E arrived today

OK, some questions - please help!!!

DOWEL PINS I didn't have them when I assembled the heads and neither my friend nor I noticed until the gaskets were all torqued as per the ARP 65lbs.

Do I need dowel pins? I used studs with the cometics and thought the pins were more for gasket alignment than the head floating - there are 13 studs in each head so surely that is enough lateral stability - I can't see the head being any more solidly fixed with the dowel pins. Then again....

Anyone got some thoughts?

If I need to install them will I need to get new COMETICS or can I just re-use the ones in the block right now?

LIFTERS/ROCKERS

Photos to follow later but I think I found out why the engine was underpowered and it was one cylinder in particular. The stock lifters appear to have collapsed to a degree on a cylinder. The resultant problems were probably why my truck was in such poor state. I now feel justified in having stripped the engine completely.

The problem is now what lifter to go for?

850 - stock ish, therefore prone to fail

875 - better, louder, false knock.

Who is running the 875s without any additional valve train noise? Also, what rockers are you running?

Hope someone is reading this!

Thanks, Mark

Re: 4L80E arrived today

well.....i'm on a geuss here.
i "think" i have 875's in mine..and have false knock.
the problem wih the 850's are overrated. only 2 of this board had problems with these. and it's a stock style lifter. you could prolly also use stock ones.
with dowel pins you mean guides for the heads?

Re: 4L80E arrived today

why dont you just get a set from one of our vendors so you know you'll get the correct ones ? Even if you saved 20 on the ebays , you still dont know if they are right . Seems worth it imo . Nice to see the progress , you will be ready to install soon from the looks of it .

Re: 4L80E arrived today

This pic shows the almost mirror finish before the gaskets went on:

P1010029.jpg

The cometics seem to be set back a little from the cylinders which i thought was odd. Wonder why - anyone?

P1010031.jpg

We made some good progress but ran into a couple of snags.

The first one was this:

P1010033.jpg

Anyone see anything wrong?

What about this one?

P1010032.jpg

Basically, it looks as though a lifter has collapsed (the one on the right - sits lower in the casing). GUess that may have caused some problems.

One of these was missing - wonder where it went?

P1010034.jpg

This must be what people were talking about as the lifter just fell apart in my had. I was trying to reuse the stock ones but I guess not.

So after much searching and a conversation with Rene and Mike, I went with the 875s. Later I can rev the engine higher if I want to so it made sense. Hope I set them right.

We got to this stage:

P1010035.jpg

Looks good eh? Apart from the missing dowel pins....

So I need new COMETICS - like Dig said in another post as did Mike, for $170 am i going to jeopardise a $XXXX build? No. So more $$$ to correct as well as the dowel pins.

I hope the studs don't break loose as I will have to do them again as well, though they are not so important in the block as the nuts holding the head down.

As for rockers, it just seems such a crap shoot to get it right.

1.5 vs 1.6, some people say there isn't a difference, some say there is.

Roller vs roller tip, hp gains, no hp gains.

Installation - ARP don't make the M10 - 3/8 studs with enough height to make them fully roller rocker? How come - there must be thousands of vortec V6 heads out there? WTF?

7/16 studs aren't self aligning, so yet more machine work is needed either to drill for 7/16th studs, or you have to get ISKY giudes for your non self aligning rockers.

As it happens, I have gone with some stock Vortec rockers from a board member - Tooky had good luck with them so I can't see why I shouldn't.

I don't mind spending $20 here and there but I am haemoragging money - postage prices to this place SUCK! :D

Anyway, over!

As for installing the engine - I need a truck first! I am going to the body shop tomorrow to see if the guy there has powder coated my frame and got on with the rest of it yet or not. He smashed the rear glass - anyone got a part number?

I need another bottle of wine

That area of the gasket has something to do with squish band or quench area.

Which would suggest getting new gaskets is a good idea. Oh well :D

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Re: 4L80E arrived today

UPDATE as at 23 Jul 08

i have made very little progress since I got back from Afghanistan partly due to a silly mistake  , a new woman in my life :D and the delays that have been caused by the body work guy   .

The mistake was the dowel pins but the lifters were knackered anyway so I needed a new set. Seems the 875s are a better option so I have gone that way along with new replacement COMETICS. I just need to source some dowel pins. Rene, yes, these are the giude pins for the heads.

Has anyone got a set they can give me or tell me where to get them from?

Onto the bodywork guy.....

After giving the truck to him in Dec last year, he hasn't made what I would call acceptable progress. It was supposed to be completed by the time I got back from Afghanistan in May but he had barely touched it. I was given a bunch of excuses and tried to be patient with him.

After not hearing anything from him for about 4 weeks now that I am in Iraq I lost my cool. I e-mailed a solicitor and got advice on what my rights were and sent him an e-mail saying that if I didn't get it finished by mind August for my R&R, then I was going to sue.

He didn't check his e-mail so I called him yesterday and said that for the money I was quoted, the service is unacceptable.

Funnily enough, today I had some e-mails and he has rescheduled his work timetable!! These are the pics he has taken. Apparently the chassis is getting powdercoated this week and the body is going to primer next week.

The work being done is as follows:

Trans tunnel lip welded, sealed etc for trans work.
Body rust around windows removed - new panels in.
New body mounts installed.
Door hinges removed/repaired as driver side was starting to sag. Common I believe.
New windscreen seal.
Firewall rust holes patched up, front wings cleaned and painted
All over respray. (arctic white for the body and anthracite for the cladding. I like the white grey look)

I go back to the UK for RnR in Aug and should have a roller ready for the engine to get dropped in not long after that!

OK, couple of bits of help if anyone is reading this? Please?!!

Dowel pins - where to get them or can anyone provide a set of 4 for me?

Car cover - what are people using for a Ty? Link please?

Mod - can you rename the thread please? I was going to update the title as and when I had different updates but I only did it once and now it is stuck. Can I just call it "1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild" please?

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Probably too late, but I don't think you needed to get new Cometic gaskets. They are advertised as being reusable and I have heard of people reusing them (in other turbo engines) 3-5 times. They are metal with a thin Viton coating so its not like a regular gasket where it tears to shit when you pull it apart. If you already got new ones I would hang on to the old ones as spares!!

As for the dowel pins they should be standard Small Block Chevy dowel pins, when I was at the machine shop they had dozens of them laying around.

Great pics man!! Keep it up... I really like to see the rust repair!! Glad to see the truck won't be allowed to rot!
