Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Got my new ECM and cut the case to install my Prominator

DSC00075.jpg

Cleaned old valve covers and sent them off to get powdercoated grey, the same colour as the block.

DSC00077.jpg

Unfortunately I ripped the PCV grommets:

DSC00078.jpg

New ones on order :(

Readjusted the stock A arm coilovers and ground down the camber adjustment bolts:

DSC00088.jpg

The setup looks good. When i dropped it off the stands there was a noticeable improvement in the spring rate and damping. Can't wait to try it on the street one day!

I removed the old brake master cylinder:

DSC00085.jpg

and installed the hydroboost unit. Much more space. A bit heavier though.

DSC00090.jpg

OK...now for the nightmare.

I was torquing up the bolts for the water pump and it sheered off in the block. I rushed it and totally :bad-word:ed up the bolt...

My Dad is a Dentist and he got some dental drills (diamond tip) on the case with his surgical goggles to grind it down flat so we can use the difficult-out tool on it.

DSC00136.jpg

I hope the patient will be ok. If not then JB weld goes in there and we'llre-tap the hole. If THAT doesn't work then I better hope that 3 bolts is enough for the water pump.:rant::(

Managed also to get the tranny cooler installed and the braided RPM lines connected.

I also had to move house -AGAIN. At leas this time I have some pics of the truck in sunlight :D

HAHAHAHAHAH

crack in block after water pump error

I should have known better. My last post I said it wouldn't leave unless it was under its own power and here I am towing it to a machine shop to get it worked on :rotf:

WHAT AN IDIOT IAM.

Power...hmmm...maybe my truck is like Christine, powered by EVIL. So in a way, it is still leaving under its own power, the power of EVIL.

95, 97, C16 and EVIL...you can't mess with this stuff.

Ona good note, my valve covers arrived and look good now :D

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

After the cracked block saga last week and a weekend in Scotland, IU hit the car hard today.

A parcel from the states arrived with some goodies in, the most impressive of which were these:

19.99 from speedway - best 20 bucks ever for braided hose.

DSC00177.jpg

I installed the idler pulley, nice new steel one as well as the new tensioner. I also put on the balancer as well as tightening up the PS pulley.

DSC00178.jpg

Spray painted the fan and some brackets and test fit the studs for the roller rockers.

DSC00179.jpg

Ordered some hoses and connections for the hydroboost as I am still short one or two things.

I am hoping to get the engine sealed and primed by the end of the weekend.

So much more to do before it drives although I should be ok with the trans. Got a few extra items - lots of "bitty" jobs.

Less of a project, more of a vendetta now :D

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

well, it's all pretty much in the truck now and I am starting to worry about having run out of excuses and may be about to start it up this week.

I just need to do some wiring after the battery relocate and tidy up some of the lighting but after that I just need to fill it with fuel, prime the rail and let the pump run in and fill the lines etc and should be good to go.

I also need to burn a BIN to the PROMinator I have in the truck so I am hoping not to be thwarted by PC gremlins when I am so close to starting it up.

I do have a couple of questions if people are reading...

SPARK WIRES

I have bought some new TAYLOR wires and I measured the resistance and they all came out around 600 ohms. I compared them to the old MSD wires I had and they were only 150 ohms. Presumably this is not good news? Anyone got any thoughs/recommendations? I am tempted to use the older MSDs as they only had maybe 500 miles on them.

AC COMPRESSOR

I haven't got the AC system charged and need a new condenser and was planning on disconnecting the clutch. The instructions mentioned something about charging it with specific AC oil - does anyone know if running it without the AC oil will be bad? The fact that it says to charge it with the oild kind of tells me it will be but as with a lot of this truck I don't know much about it - can anyone chime in?

EXHAUST TIP

My truck is 2" lower now and the exhaust may drag along the floor of my garage as it is on a slope going sort of underground (see pics above). I need an exhaust tip that is flatter as well as looking a bit newer than the crappy one I have so that I can clear the ramp. I also experience melted cladding with the last tip (just a straight exit pipe) so ideally would like something that won't allow that to happen again. An exhaust that hot has got to be running nadly right? Hope the rebuild has addressed that issue as well.

INJECTOR HARNESS

Is there a way to tell which injector should go where? The two cylinders by themselves are obvious but the two on each side that are close together are easily confused - I don't want to guess and cause myself startup problems - I have enough to contend with right now.

I'm getting real close. Wish me luck guys.

* the plug where you hook it into the wiring harness should go at the passengerside. further than that you will see were it would hook up*

good luck, i may have those gromets ans pvc valves.

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Hope I don't get in trouble for double posting in my own thread - mods let me know if this is unacceptable :D

Checked the wiring after the retard that worked on it put it back together.

So far I have hazards, turn signals (all 4 on each side!), high beams and power to the fogs though the lamps are u/s.

DSC00218.jpg

Rear RHS lightbulb blew so I need new ones for that as well as the park lights :(

DSC00219.jpg

Brake sensor not getting depressed due to Hydroboost being too short - how to get around this?

ECM is blank due to PROMinator having no BIN file and my data cable is too short :(

The immobiliser is preventing me fron cranking the engine. Going to try and test for the fuel pump tomorrow. Ordered some parts for the turbo/intercooler problem :(

Found a shitload of goop in the rear RHS brake/turn lamp...anyone seen this before? It was like putty and sticky - almost thought it was pay dough?

DSC00217.jpg

Tomorrow I rip out the immobiliser and try and turn the engine over.

Also, my HI/LO beam switch in the steering column appears to be U/S :(

So I need:

push in bulbs
fog lamps
steering dimmer switch - anyone ever replaced one? where from? how much?

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

I figured it must have been - did seem kind of past the sell by date as it was ozzing onto the contacts and the bulb wasn't working properly. In diagnosing it I ended up blowing the bulb :(

Get your truck here to the states & we will get it running good for ya, the crack in the block?? how bad is it? Sounds like asking for trouble there.

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Hey man :D

The crack problem is a couple of weeks old now. The truck is almost fully assembled - just trying to work out some electrical gremlins now.

I have an immobiliser on there and can't see it helping.

As for flying the truck to the US, I think if I were to buy an American truck again then I would buy it from the US, do all the work over there and then ship it back here. It would have to be cheaper than what I have gone through!

I offered Bezerk a free flight over here to help get it running - I might offer it up to the board :D Reclkon there'd be any takers? A long weekend in Southwest England followed by a night out in London? Flights and accommodation included? Just bring shinky spare parts and lots and lots of syty knowledge/experience/patience? :D

How to I check the switch for going high beam to low?

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

is there a solenoid in there? the switch doesn't seem to click like it used to? I'll have a look for the relay then.

I also need the terminal that goes on the coil . The pink wire has been severed right at the boot of the connector so I am going to have to disassemble it but will prob break it.

:(

So close and yet so far.....

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

More progress today...

Removed the Scorpion immobiliser that I had in the truck and all of a sudden things started happening.

bye bye junk....

DSC00115.jpg

The footwell light came on the dvr side!

Ignition works and the engine turns over now. I amreally annoyed with the idiots that installed the immobiliser though:

DSC00116.jpg

I have managed to salvage this connector to the coil but it isn't pretty :(

ECM came online and am trying to get a BIN uploaded. My PCS TCU worked like a dream as well so I put the base file on that.

Brake lines tonight and hopefully later an answer to my question about the BIN problem :D

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

OK,

I am hours away from having a running truck. I have had some issues the last day or two with the PROMinator that I bought but they have been resolved for now with the aid of Mike Hood (sytyguy) so I am golden with that at present. No code 59 for the time being but a good tune and the ECM is loaded up.

I flushed the fuel lines with a mix of half and half new/old gas (sealed in correct gas cans) and filled the tank halfway and primed the system.

Ignition works and I have spark, fuel and tonight I spent about 5 hours tryin to get it to start. I had a few pops and bangs so am very close but I clearly ****ed up the timing set up so tomorrow I am getting a new timing light and will go from there.

Bezerk was on the phone giving me advice - some of the most basic things I forgot in my rush to try and start her up. I really thought I was careful with this truck but I guess I made some mistakes.

The first bang from the ignition of spent fuel scared my Dad and I but then we were really keen tio get it going. We did have a hosepipe on hand just in case though!

I am still waiting on a few things like the PCV setup and some grommets and I found out that my e-brake cable disappeared so I need a new one of those :(

Lights all work and the truck has some life back in it so hopefully I will be able to drive it by the end of the week.

The ABS has been connected so I just need to bleed the lines and adapt the hydroboost in some way so that the lights are only on when braking - the short rod to the master cylinder pulls the pedal a bit away from the switch and there is very little travel.

I'm also starting to think about having the brake discs

My exhaust needs some work doing as well as some parts don't fit which is bloody irritating but not the end of the world.

Lots of stuff to do now, especially the tuning :D

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Your getting close today could be the day.

As for the brakes I'm sure i read somewhere that you have to extend the new rod by cutting the eye off and welding on part of the original rod to bring the pedal back where it should be.

Good luck on starting her up.:popcorn2:
