Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Wow - as my first post, let me commend the OP for the determination it took to actually get this done. I wish I had that level of commitment to my Tyclone project back in the day. I've spent my time waiting to be admin approved to post here reading this entire thread, and it was very enjoyable. Kudos!

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Thanks very much!

I couldn't have done it without the support I'd the vendors and members on here. Harmon let me ride in his truck and that rekindled my interest and bezerk kicked my ass/advised me/fixed things where and when he could.

2010 is the year I hope to run it at a track. Not a lot left to do apart from niggly stuff!

Glad you enjoyed reading all this!

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Well...I thought I would consolidate some pictures in this thread as well as list out the remaining things left for me to do. Some of these pics are reposts but it's my project thread so I don't care :D

After the cryo treatment in Holland over the winter (See above) I went back in April to fix my car and then ship it to the USA.

Washed ready for ther trip to Rotterdam..

P1010081.jpg

Leaving bezerk'splace..

P1010083.jpg

For such an ugly guys he has a cute kid and Anouk is awesome

P1010082.jpg

Road to the port - all going well..

P1010087.jpg

Awww crap - something's not right - had to pull over...

P1010090.jpg

This isn't right...

P1010089.jpg

So I took the wheel off and found:

P1010092.jpg

The bolts were not torqued down to 75lbs nor was red loctite used. One was gone completely and the other was almost entirely out.

A kind passer by drove me to a garage and I miraculously was able to find the right sized bolt and some tools. The AAA truck showed up just as I finished.

SyTyUSA009.jpg

No start so this man saved my bacon....

SyTyUSA010.jpg

And the trailer stayed together all the way home! ;)

Back on a trailer to go to Crazykaese's house..
SyTyUSA014.jpg

SyTyUSA013.jpg

No damage in shipping although the ECM fuse had blown due to a crappy relay from China. Not sure why - Walbro pump?

On the road home... Happy Birthday America..

SyTyUSA016.jpg

Got it to Dennis's house..

SyTyUSA017.jpg

and promptl;y had it up on stands....
SyTyUSA020.jpg

One issue Dennis recognised straight away..

After starting it fell on its face. Bad cap and rotor he said. So......
SyTyUSA018.jpg

A little TLC...

Washed, running...the local wildlife liked it at least!

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Insured and running, I drove my 1992 Typhoon on a USA road for possibly the first time in its existence. It was kind of emotional. This is the approach to Philadelphia.

The SyTy crowd around here are too helpful.

4thJulyWeekend009.jpg

I had a great, great weekend with all 3 of these guys and the hospitality left nothing to be desired. I was humbled at the efforts these guys all went to on my behalf. I hope I can return the favour.

4thJulyWeekend010.jpg

Pretty soon it was on jack stands again..
4thJulyWeekend012.jpg

Drove it home, 30 min on I 95 to Delaware. It now rests comfortably in my parking garage here in Wilmington.

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

OK...so now the history lesson is complete, these are the things I want to get done on the car in the next few weeks...

replace rear carpet - charcoal - anyone know where to source it from?
box in battery with stock looking battery compartment like bezerk has in his - need charcoal vinyl - any ideas?
install battery kill switch
more grounds directly from the engine to the battery - make up some cables
port match and paint/powdercoat intake plenum - Keith? :D
install heater hoses and connect the core - need the hoses or new ones...
test blower motor/replace
refurbish the alternator with a 140A kit (as recommended by Keith)
throttle bracket - paint it
install an overhead console one day - where to get one?
fix the rattle on the rear hatch
fix the rattling side panels
silence the exhaust leaks from the crossover
connect the washer bottle to the hoses
neaten up the wiring under the dash
install all the stock dash pieces
install ALKYCONTROL kit - dial it in!!
isolate and remove the squeaking/clanking from the front suspension
purchase a USB serial adaptor for PCS/DM/TunerPro RT
AC install - purchased hoses from HARMON
BOV install - got the unit, need hoses/solenoid and control system
mount the DM 5 AFR gauge
lower IC hotwire - maybe a fan?
remount ECM in stock position - open to debate
dial in boost controller - Greddy Profec Spec B II (anyone got the instructions on line?)
reattach parking brake and hood release catches
fix the horn connection
sort the turn indicator cancel in the column
reattach the heated rear windscreen connector
install new motors/rails for the side windows
isolate and prevent the leak in the drivers footwell.
reverse light install/rear fog lamp
alarm install/immobilser/remote start - compustar SS
fix central locking system
replace the side window seals
replace the cracked dash pad
install rear wedges to align the pinion angle
blast/paint/coat the rear drums/replace the rear pads

Not necessarily in that order! :D

I've heard some states even let you register the UK plates as vanity plates! I don't know how sentimental you are about them...or if you can where you are now.

Too bad you didn't had my number... The exit on the freeway in this photo is the exit near my house (2 minutes drive)!
And the AAA was probably behind some tree waiting till your finished on the truck... Bastards

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Decided to have a Typhoon window clinic at Crazy Kaese's house this weekeknd.

Plan was to install a window motor in his and see why my window was sticking.

SyTyWeekend2001.jpg

The guy who built my truck put the plastic window support in the truck the wrong way round so the rail was loose.

I thought I would tighten it.....

So I did but it wasn't designed to go that way so the entire window exploded. Had I not had the laminate tint on it then it would have gone everywhere.

So off we went to the junk yard for a replacement window. After 3 hrs of robbing the various S10s in the yard (Rest In Pieces), we headed back.

Turns out the window runners weren't installed properly either and the little guide clips on the window are different for a manual vs electric window.

All in all, I had the window and the rails/weatherstripping in and out about 6 times. Finally got it working.

Then we repaced Dennis' motor in about 30 min. Couldn't have gone better.

Why is my truck such a PITA?

The good news is I have loads of little fasteners and can start reassembling my dash once I figure out the electrical issue with the console. Next weekend....

The little plastic clips from GM that prevent the door from rattling really helped. Small progress but still progress!!! And now I have washers that wash the screen.

If only my speedo/fuel gauge worked - thank goodness the GPS works.

Also - quick question - if you leave a Greddy without power, does it forget the settings? Mine appears to have done so and I am now on the stock spring so around 9 psi.

I'm going to investigate further this weekend with my Typhoon partner in crime, Dennis :D

Bad news though - someone with a POS is parked next to me and it is making me nervous....

:rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: That bastard is probably hoping they will break into yours and stop breaking into his! It's too bad for him it's usually the oposite that happens, people break into the POS's because they're easier to.

I am now dizzy after literally reading thru all 18 pages of this thread I stumbled upon about an hour and a half ago. Lol.

My hats off to your patience and your wallet sir! What a ride that truck has been on!

I wish I had the time/patience and ridiculous amt. of $$ that cost you.

Fantastic truck. :tup::tup:
