??? about 412 cam

You guys that are running this cam what are your shift points, and what are some of the characteristics of it, you know does it have a lot of low end torque etc.? I am going with a balance shaft motor and was thinking about staying with the stock cam that is in it , or switching to the 412. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. :)

Thanks,
Mike

Mike.......if you're using a balance shaft motor, you'll want the Comp 56-440-8 camshaft......that's the BS equivalent to the 412. Anywho....I have noticed an elevated and much wider power band. 4000-5000 pulls harder now, and the truck never really feels like it "noses over" as it does when stock (around 4600-4800 rpm).

Idle quality is excellent with the 412. A little choppy with an open exhaust, but plenty of vacuum and very docile (esp. when running thru mufflers). Low end torque is abundant, but that's never really a problem for us. I use a higher stall converter, and although I didn't see one listed, I assume you are gonna run one as well (?). I have no complaints about the 412 and highly recommend for anyone considering a cam swap. A well proven cam.

Another thing to consider as well, Mike, is how radical you're gonna get with this build down the road. I see you have a GT61 in mind and already have Brodix heads......with that in mind you may wanna look a little bigger. You may benefit from more duration as Waller did when he reached the power potential limit of the 412.

i agree the 412 cam makes cylinder pressures very high and other cams can give you enough at the bottom but more at the top than the 412.

Thanks for the reply
I do have a 2800 stall TC.

So I take it a good shift point would be about 5000 with the 412? Like ED mentioned in the other thread, I don't want too much low end torque as this would have a negative affect on the launch...spin, spin, spin. I had this on a previous build, and solved it by going with a little larger turbo and exhaust housing. You might want to consider something like this for your truck Ed. It definitely softened the launch.

I think if I do go with the 412 and have traction problems, changing to the GT 61 would soften the launch.

Any other thoughts ?

Thanks,
Mike

412 is great but, I would step up to something a bit larger with brodix's and a bigger turbo.

brodies prob could use some more lift and if your like me you will want to spin it 5500-6k and the 412 will die out above 5200 or what vortec's.

I'd do a 422 or larger but you will need to be able to tune it bc the larger you go the less vac u will see.

i forgot to answer you about shift points.

with my 700r4 trans shift points were 5100.

with my rossler thm 400 shift points are 5200.

On Tonys truck with the 412 and stock unported Vortecs shift points are in the 5500-5700 rpm depending on boost level. As boost goes up the shift points go up as he is into the converter more. Best shift point for 412 is the 5400-5500 rpm range for Tonys combo and the T-72.
