And BTW, will be installing one of these in the truck and putting it on our company account:

Junk. Waayyyy to easy to remove. My sister had one on the tracker she had. They forgot to remove it when we paid it off. They kept giving her codes to keep it running. I just removed it. It was hooked up with wire nuts!

Get this instead. It's what I have on my Odyssey and we love it.

Too bad they didn't try it 2 days earlier. Woulda been hard to steal it without a fuel pump.

*IF* insurance doesn't total it out, before I accept any settlement from them, I am going to need to get a Datamaster or something on it to verify there is no internal issues.

Don't want to accept a settlement and then come to find out that there is something f*cked up internally.

STILL waiting on the cops to call me and let me know when I can go get her. :(

Re: ALERT: 92 GMC Typhoon #1377 Stolen - nashville tn

At least it is recovered. I would feel so releived. It would have sucked to start all over again. Hopefully they assess the damage correctly and it gets fixed quickly. It would be nice if the punks that did this get busted but they usually don't get caught.

Good Plan I hade a accident many years ago. And I settled. Come to find out/there was electrical and mechanical damage that came about. They wouldn't cover me. I suggest you total her if they do you should get in excess of 10k . Then you can buy it back for like2-3k I bet. if there is something wrong with it you will have the cash to repair Her. Just my two cents. Downside is you will have a salvage title. Depends how much you really Lover her. :)

IMO you're a lucky bastard to have gotten it back. I've heard TONS of stories over the years of guys who never hear from their trucks again. Oh yea, another good reason to do all your own work:lol:

Honestly to me it sounds like something happened to the motor so they ditched the car, that is way to much trouble to go through just for a joy ride. Some punk kids out for some fun aren't going to steal another car, go barreling through a fence just to take another car for a joy ride. They knew what the truck was and maybe what you were doing to it. Hopefully the damage isn't bad, which is very possible.

Leak-down and compression tests would be on my list for sure.

My gut feeling is a fellow repair shop customer, buddy of a mechanic there, someone saw it at the shop and wanted it. I don't think it was a "professional". #1 they wouldn't joy ride it and expose the vehicle to public any longer than needed, #2 lets be honest if I am going to steal a car to part out for cash a typhoon isn't the one I would go after. I'd pick up something worth more than that and something that is common more difficult to trace.

Not to say they haven't stolen a car or 2 before.

I'd just be worried about an inside connection to that shop, one they may not even realize either just someone with a window into what is going on with it.

I was going to say the same thing. Really sounds like they went out of their way to get your truck specifically, and that tells me that it's someone who knows, or is at least familiar with the truck. I'm sure the cops have already checked, but does the shop have a CCTV system?

I don't have much in the way of typhoon specific parts, but if there is something you need, interior wise, I'd be willing to help. Glad to hear she was recovered too, I know it may not seem like it, but consider yourself lucky these guys weren't pros.

Re: ALERT: 92 GMC Typhoon #1377 Stolen - nashville tn

Shop doesn't have a CCTV. Neither do the businesses next door. Well, they *DO* have cameras, but they are non-functional.

The truck was taken because of what it is. I know that. There were plenty of other vehicles there that weren't touched...Only the Land Cruiser to knock the gate down and my truck, which was stolen.

Still no word from the police yet on when it will be released from impound so that I can get it out of there and see what the damage is to it and let the adjusters look at it.

The shops insurance is going to be covering the truck.

I have never dealt with an insurance company on a "theft recovery" such as this, so any information / ideas that you guys want to throw up, please do.

Keep in mind, the motor in the truck is BRAND NEW. It had about 950 miles on the rebuilt motor. Obviously, they didn't take it out and cruise or Sunday drive the vehicle...they beat the living shit out of it. SO...The #1 concern is that there is NO motor/transmission/drivetrain issues. Leak down and compression tests? Entire motor/trans be pulled and inspected?

I want the truck gone over with a fine tooth comb *if* they decide to repair it vs. totaling it.

Again, even working at the dealership, I've never dealt with an insurance company on a "theft recovered vehicle" (we always just write them off). So being that the business insurance is going to cover it, help me out with thoughts/suggestions/ideas on what is going to be in my best interest please.

Thanks guys,
Nate

Hopefully you have the receipts from the engine work. I would find a GOOD shop to do some tests on the engine/transmission/transfer case to verify that it wasn’t torn up during the incident. I would have as much documentation as you can stating the value of the truck. They will try their best to pay you for a 92 Jimmy. Have someone where like CarTronics give you a price on the dash repair including the wiring since I doubt they were gentle while removing the brand new HD DVD Nav Ipod XM radio you just installed. Have the shop price a replacement steering column. They aren’t hard to replace, but you want a good one and not just one from a junk yard. If it was taken off road- have the wheels checked for radial and axial bends and the alignment checked. Tell the adjuster that you want to have these test/checks done BEFORE you will accept any type of offer.

If they decide to total it- they will let you buy it back from them (by deducting the buyback cost from the settlement check). Depending on what the damage is- that could be awesome for you. Say the engine is blown. They will total it and give you $10,000 and they say the buyback is $1500. They will give you a check for $8500 and the truck (which will have a branded title on it). You then have $8500 to repair the damage on your own. You could then build it however you want. LS motor? Overbuilt 4.3? 4l80? 20” rimz with Vette brakes? Pimpin’ stereo? It’s possible that the title will end up being branded “Theft Recovery” anyways since that is what it is now, but I’m not sure if they have to total it first before they can place a brand on it.

No word yet. And you know the weather we got last night/today, so all I am picturing is it sitting outside with a busted drivers window.

When I bought it I took a small loan with the my credit union out over a year and a half to build some credit after filing a bankruptcy.

Ironically, as of 12:01 am this morning, the Ty is paid off and "officially" mine.
