almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

well after almost two years of not being able to drive my ty due to a cracked piston and an 18 month visit to the desert, i am almost back on the road again. i was gonna do a forged build up but came up a little short on parts when i got back from my last round in the desert so i'm gonna take my time and finish getting the parts to do it right and not half ass it. and i need my dd back so i decided to try putting a newer vortec motor in it i pulled from a salvage yard and document my cost to show it could be done on the reasonable cheap. but i'm also putting in some of the stuff i picked up for my good motor since i have it and it'll make the transition smooth to the good motor. so if some of the things i'm using look like over kill that's why.

so here's my list

2003 vortec 4.3 complete out of a 2wd, i sourced it from a local yard for 425 w/ a 2 year warrenty and they said they'd honor the warrenty as long as any damage isn't a result of the turbo. i'm gonna part out what i don't need to help bring my cost down.

4x4 oilpan - ebay score 50 dollars shipped

lower intake modded for vortecs -- JS Manufacturing -- i'm gonna port match and port it myself to keep the cost down, and drill and tap mty heads myself

atr headers - got these for the "good" motor and i'm gonna use them cause they're shiny, not really required at this level, but like i said they're shiny. and i'm gonna adjust my down pipe as needed to fit.

fast xfi -- another not required at this level but i have it and this will be a good chance to get familiar with it, i got my plug and play harness from casper electronics

for now i'm keeping the stock cam, but i'm planning on changing that out shortly but haven't seen many cam options for a bs motor.

stock turbo at the momement because the budget is too tite for an upgrade and i really need my truck on the road again, but the plan is for a gt35r to make its way in there eventually

65lb injectors -- i had 50's but i'm want to experiment with e85 so i got these for the head room.

i got a walbro 255 to go in for now but when i'm done getting the fittings, i got a full aeromotive fuel system w/ custom rails to replace that.

i'm still kicking around whether or not to use my msd 6al w/ a 2 step or go with dual line locks.

i'm gonna pamper the tranny while i finish collecting the parts for a th400 w/ 308s.
i'm gonna keep my stock block and start putting it together with the goodies i got put away, forged eagle rods and probe pistons, four bolt main caps. but i want to either get a set of full ported vortecs for it or use these pontiac paper weights i got on it. maybe even twins one day, but for now this is gonna hold me over. and i'll have it back on the road to enjoy and can give the wife back her grand cherokee.

Turbotime can make any of their camd onto a BS cam blank. If you looking for cheap upgrade I have a used BS SoGT camshaft that I might be selling or slightly upgraded (turbo friend) cam if the deal goes through for the balance shaft block I am looking at.

The Vortec cam is something .403/.429 175/195 duration (off the top of my head)
The SoGT cam is .440/.440 208/208

Re: almost there for now

sounds like a solid build...... i think the vortec longblock, and stock csm is gonna surprise you......

i'll bet 12.5 out of the box on stock boost and no alky.

11.8 with tuning and alky......

on a side note, you get your stock turbo removed from those manifolds yet???

shaft, and cable are ready to go for you.........:D

well i got the heads installed today and stared mocking the headers to check fit and it all looked good other than a small snag. does anyone know what size bit its the square drive plug or should i go ahead and grind it smooth? it sticks out a 1/8 or so and its not 3/8 or 1/4 drive

YES, PROGRESS!

It *should* be a 5/16" or 8MM plug:

"DIY tool for removing the plug on the passenger side head of my 3.4 S10 for water temp sender. Finished dimensions are approximately 5/16" or 8 MM."

Another member (MRKING?) suggested the back end of a large tap will work too.

The usual order of business is to cut a notch in the header flange for clearance for that plug BTW.

i sees, guess i'll either notch the header or make it flush tommorrow and maybe post up another pic of it

This is how some folks deal with the clearance issue GIT-R-DONE!:

wiperless and defrostless back window. i know a lot of people son't like this one with the metal trim but it was all i could find and for the price "FREE" i couldn't pass it up.

PHOT0002.jpg

my a/c heater delete box and it doesn't look quite as bad irl as the photo but another one of those hard to pass deals "FREE" a little clean up and rattle can work and it'll be good to go.

i know a some of these pictures are repetitive for people who have been around a bit but i hope they help the newbies in understanding what some of the parts and changes everyone talks are.

and yes that is the second half of the flooring that cost me some use of my left hand.

i think i'm gonna try to fit my a/a where the lower heat exchanger is and will post pictures of the modifications required to fit it and any other mods i have to do to fit this oddball set up in the ty... valve cover mods, intake mods and port work, 4x4 oil pan modification. all the things i've asked questions about.

Is that from a camera phone? If you can use a regular camera, Macro mode (usually a little "flower" icon) will allow close up detail shots.
