Re: almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

found out i need to helicoil a second injectoer rail bolt hole on my intake this afternoon. i know when jeff did my intake he fixed the other one for me. don't suppoe anyone knows the bolt size off hand. i'm thinking 1/4 -20 but not for sure. on a good note i did install my new console hinge, window switch and passanger mirror. blocked out the hood and found only one low spot so i'm pretty happy about that but also seen my driver fender is junk now. i guess i missed it rusting out when i was looking under the cladding for damage and all the crap on the inner fender on that side helped hide it, so i guess i'll be scrounging another fender.

current update, i have my laptop linked to my fast xfi computer right now. its funny i'm running linux so i didn't figure itd work but as soon as i ditched the usb converter it linked right up. i'm pretty stocked right now about even though its not ready to start this is a good step forward for me. i also have my upper intake on and my injectors in. tested my fuel system for leaks and fixed the one i found, but it won't hold fuel pressure gotta find out why. pretty sure its the check valve in the pump. all thats left is hoses and the upper inter cooler. e-rue if you're reading this hat lower rad hose did you use?

Re: almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

okay major snag today. i went out ran my new msd wires no problem and thought i'd go ahead and put my upper inter cooler on, of course none of the brackets line up to support it, and after putting it in place o measure for new brackets i find it estingo n my wideband )2 sensor and all but touching the ehaust housing in the turbo where the turbo to intercooler hose goes. does anyone have an pictures of these damn kb headers installed? or is anyone running the stock a/w intercooler with them? i have that huge a/a intercooler sitting here but i'm thinking it's just a little big for the stock turbo. but if i can't find a way to run the stock stuff i guess we'll find out if it's too big. for anyone considering running kb headers, they are the biggest pain in the ass i think i've ever seen. if i knew how much trouble they'd be i would have traded or sold them off. i wonder how much jeff would charge me to build a set of tt v8 headers like his.

well i went out and modified my core support for the a/a intercooler i have and it fits but i'm going to need to hack on it a bit more. on a good note i can trim the hood latch and it'll bolt back in. so no need for hood pins yet, i don't think but i have them sitting here just in case.

i'll get'em up as soon as i get the intercooler bolted in place. right now it's just sitting in there. i did get my pulleys on today after mangling the power steering pump pulley but replacing that was the cheapest thing i found to replace on the truck 13.60 w/ tax. now if i can find a belt and a lower rad hose i can start working with the computer.

well got oil and water in it today, but now the starter is dragging, not sure if its a bad starter or voltage drop, i'll have to look into it in the morning

check your grounds and battery voltage . they go bad after sitting . Apparently I always try to start my truck up just a day later than desired , cause my optima red top is f-ing dead everytime ...

i ran new wires, i'm leaning towards the starter since i think i got a 93 starter and i hear an 03 engine takes a different one.

i would be interested if it's for the 03 vortec motor. i know it needs to have the offset bolt pattern. lmk on the price

You really only need the middle bracket that goes to the intake manifold.

it doesn't fit in any way, the hose routing is wrong, it sits on my wideband, just all sorts of crazy. these kb headers have really relocated the turbo.

went and got a new starter, it was pretty impressive too. i think its smaller than the mini starter i had on the previous build. also picked up a new window motor since mine is cracked. well i was right the starter was wrong one. it tested fine but was binding. now the truck cranks fine but setting this fast computer up is a pain. i think its not getting a rpm signal. for some reason while cranking my tach tries to go backwards.

pulled the distributer tonight and found one of the magnets was cracked, some looked like they were down a little bit and it was disgustingly rusted. not sure how to test the pickup coil and need to test the ignition module. what a pain. looking at the tip of the rotor bug it looks like there was spark. but i know i should have checked for spark before i tore it down but figuring with my luck and it siting for two years the pick up or ignition module is bad.

Re: almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

i've been having issue upon issues getting this truck to start. i finally noticed i was only seeing 10.5volts at the ecm and no tach signal still. so i picked up a new distributor, and starrting to get a random tach signal. so i spliced in a battery lead to the ecm to see if bringing up the voltage would help and it did i even got the truck to back fire. but now i can't keep my laptop connected while cranking and i think i'm going to have to hook my msd box or ground out the feed to the fast box for it. i also think i'm going to have to get a copy of xp or vista running and quit trying to do this through linux. and the final hangup is probably the 2 year old fuel in the tank. so i need to find a place to dump about 12 to 15 gallons of junk gas. but its progress so i'm starting to get excited

Re: almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

finally got it started ended up being a low voltage to the ecm while cranking and a timng issue. but i got it finally figured out today and it fired right up and idled, a little high but still it started. so thats a good step in the right direction.

When you say low voltage to the ECM, where did you tap into for the main power to the xfi?
I ran mine straight from the battery. There was a weatherpak connector in between the battery & the FAST box.
I never had a voltage problem with it hooked up this way & if I wanted some extra security I would just unplug the weatherpak so the truck wouldn't start.

What was the timing issue? Wrong Crank Reference Angle or a timing table problem?

Here are some things I learned while tuning mine:

To get it ti start quickly, in the Idle Functions section, set your Start IAC Pos. vs. Coolant Temp to 200 (or whatever the max. value you can plug in. Mine is at 236) from the start of the table to the second temp grade on the graph. Then make it step down until your at about 80 at max. temp on the graph.

Best idle is obtained @ about 13:1-13.5:1 AFR. So don't knock yourself out trying to get it to idle soothly @ 14.7:1.

I'm glad to see you kept working at it.
I hope those things help you out.

Re: almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

i got my battery in back and put a distribution block in the front but when i was cranking it was pulling down the voltage too far. i ended up running a seperate wire for my starter to fix it. my big timing issue was getting the crank reference angle right. thanks for the tuning help
