Re: almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

so i was going to start getting my tune dialed in but i needed to put my valve covers on first and over the course of the last few months four of the six bolts for them dissappeared. unbeliviably no parts store in the area stocks them. so after a couple of stops i found som bolts that'll fit so i'll be putting those on in the morning and tuning until it gets too hot to be outside.

well after the two hour ordeal i got the valve covers on and then found out my truck won't start with the key, only with my jumper switch i used to help set the timing. so i spent the most of today trying to figure this out and it turns out the wire i was using to trigger the relay for my msd bos wasn't a crank hot just a run hot wire. go figure the abs box isn't on during cranking.

i found my vacum leak, it's where my injectors seat in my intake. i guess these 65lb injectors are a little short, guees i'm going to try to find some more orings to try and seal it up.

i hate this truck now. it's possed by the ghost of christine or something. i put new orings on my injector to seal that leak. the. i swapped in my new pulleys and they looked great. somehow even though it looked clear i didn't adjust my belt enough so the alt fan was smacking. fixed that, figured since it was wanting to idle i should adjust my valve lash. so i backed then all off until the engine would barely start. started on one idle went up and the smoothed back down, all good. went to the next one and started adjusting it and this time the idle took off over 2000 rpm and was popping. and of course none of my splash guards wouldn't stay on, so i managed to hose down my engine with some nice 5-30

got the valve lash set, though i might tighten it up a little in the future. truck sounds pretty smooth now except for a miss. i guess i fouled out a plug. too hot to check right now. i also think i'm going to need a set of fabbed valve covers for clearence. only issue now is it idles at 1500 rpm at a afr of 12.1 so i'm sure i got a vacum leak still or my lash is off a fuzz. looking back now i think i should have dropped the motor in unmolested and used the stock rockers and manifolds. and added them one step at a time.

here's a break down on how i think of what i'm using

fast xfi -- so far its been pretty simple to work with but setting up the idle is a little complex. there's several tables that effect the idle but pretty self explainatory. i like the fact it has a fuel constant and injector constant so you don't have to completely redo your fueling tables for different injectors or e85. and it works with high or low imp injectors with no modifications.

casper's plug and play harness -- simple and straight forward. i didn't like the fact that the harness is only a few inches too long so i extended it six feet to put the xfi box in the center console but they sell a plug and play extension harness for it. also you need to wire up the fuel pump on its own. but the harness is setup to go sequential if add the required sensor. and the injectors are powered by a seperate relay instead of the ecm.

kb headers -- if i didn't spend so much on them i'd probably scrap them. the make plug access on the number four cylinder almost impossible and the cross overtube was junk, i had to remake it. the jet hot looks kinda like chrome in a can and doesn't really seam to control heat. the turbo position is all wrong for the stock turbo but i suppose a non water cooled turbo would be good.

vortec heads -- the switch wasn't bad, i had to farm out the intake welding but ported it myself, driled the intake pattern, rocker stud conversion with my drill press. nothing to be scared of. i'm looking forward to seeing the improvement from them.

1.6 crane rockers --- they might fit under the stock valve covers but won't fit the pastic ones. you have to have the shortest poly locks you can find.

vortec short block --- fits fine but you need to put a oil return in the pan, some people weld it i just used a pass through an push lock fitting and sealed it with jb weld. if you want a knock sensor you'll have to redrill the hole for the stock type sensor. i left the balance shaft hooked up for now but when i swap the cam i'm pulling the gear.

tytilidie ac delete -- not too bad of a setup, changing the belt is a little rough unless you unbolt the crank pulley. think i might switch to one with a tensioner since this will be my dd. really helps clean up the engine bay.

well even though i'm pretty well thinking outloud here i did have the truck idling perfect today. it sounded so sweet, then i goosed the throttle and all hell broke loose. it won't idle now, when its rich like 9 to 1 it runs at 1200ish, pull it up to 11 to 1 it goes to 1800ish. i put a vaccum gauge on it and it goes nuts from 5-15 like it has the jitters. i'm so close to yanking this motor and finding a car i can hear running first and then swapping the motor, it just retarded. an i'd just bolted the valve covers on.

dont loose hope now, im in the same boat. It will be all worth it in the end.

The only thing is i keep wondering if it would have been easier to go v8 carb'd turbo, hell i already own a badass block, heads, intake, and complete pully and bracket set.

well thanks for the support, i won't sell mine even if i have to put a carb on it. i do deserve the dumb dumb award. i got a wild thought that if i broke a valve spring i was just going to order a set of beehives tonight. so i went to check and, well i feel pretty special admitting this but i forgot to tighten my poly lock so i had 2 rockers off completely and the rest all loose. so i fired it up and other than the four hours i spent screwing up the tune hunting imaginary screwups it idled real smooth at 1400 rpm. so i figure if i reset my tune it should be nice and smooth again. i'll never give up on my truck, i might regroup and change my plans or engine, or anything else but i'm going to keep it and it will stay awd. might not be a v6 or turbo'd for awhile but i will keep it.

went out this morning to do some tuning and i can't seem to pull the idle down below 1650. but it's pulling 19" vacum now. so i know it's good. i'm starting to thinkg it's my idle air motor not working right. if i cover the little hole that feeds it, the motor will idle down nicely. just my luck if the brand new iac motor is junk. also noticed my expensive ricer vacum lines to my map and afpr are sucked flat, so that might be the problem. wish i could find a girl that could do someting like that.....

still fighting the sealing problen with the injectors, i measured them up against a stock injector and oring to oring they are the same but don't have the extension after the lower oring like stock. i think this is causing the problem, but i'm giving it one more shot till i look into new injectors. got my new boost guage today, it's digital and came with a new three bar map sensor for less than 100 i'll try to get powered up pictures when i get it put in.

Re: almost there for now -- update *adding Pictures* busy days 4/12

so as seems to be the norm for this damn truck i went one step forward and four back. got it idling nice so i thought i'd go ahead and get it ready to try and drive. i picked up a set of 275/40 tires for the back and figured i would put them on while i was putting in my speed bleeders and bleeding the brakes. did the back ones no problem, went to the front and some how the passenger front bleeder was broke flush with the caliper. so i put that off till next payday so i can pick up a new caliper. in the meantime i figure i'll move the pinion angle shim onto the top of my blocks. so when i loosen up my ubolts half my overload springs falls on the ground. ok so i'll just ditch my overload springs. fix that side and start on the other and of course once i loosen the ubolts half of my overload spring hits the ground again. fix all that and try and start my truck, of course the battery is dead. i put my battery charger on it and it keeps clicking to fault. okay so i put jumper cables on it, after about 45 minute it'll crank, even tried to start, cool. so instead of burning gas to charge it i put the charger back on it after checking it with my multimeter and its at ten volts. check it about three hours later and its clicked to fault again. i put my multimeter on it and now its at 0.871 volts. so after 2 days work i end up needing to replace a caliper and an optima battery. and wondering if i should replace my springs. but i do like the way the new tires look and think i want a pair in the front.

I feel your pain too, I bought my truck back in July and just now getting it to run better by swapping in stock injectors and 2bar map, wow it actually runs, I keep finding stupid stuff that was just stupily rigged.
