any Ideas?

Hello everyone,

was finishing up an engine rebuild. Marked all the wires so I could place them all back in order. Hooked up the new battery, walked around to the passenger door and the entire cab was filled with smoke. Dash gauges and console were lit up without the key in the ignition. Using the ignition key didn't change anything, all stayed the same except the wiper blades moved all the way up and stopped. The amount of smoke was substantial, had I walked off without checking the cab the truck may have burned to the ground. Only thing I changed was removing the ABS. Any ideas as to what would cause this? So far I haven't found the burnt wires. Will do a more extensive search when I get time.

Thanks for any input

Frank

if its smoking, its because insulation is burning off of the wires. Smaller gauge wiring that is used for low amp signals had high amperage travel through it, overheat the wire, and melt the insulation and wire

Re: any Ideas?

Found the problem, its a good idea to quit working on things when your too tired. I had mistakenly hooked up the 2 ground wires from the wire loom at the rear of the alternator to the post on the back of the alternator. The wires I found that burned up were the ground wires to the radio. Everything else seems to be working fine the gauges, sensors, ecm, blinkers, lights, starter, ignition, etc. if anyone has a suggestion on anything else I should check out, let me know.

Thanks

These instructions are from DaveP.

check terminal D1, tan/wht wire at the ECM carefully for signs of burning. The "other" wire
he connected to the alternator B+ is this ground wire. If it doesn't start, he may have damaged his ECM too.

Re: any Ideas?

Just was forwarded this from Aeroking. When I was putting together my truck, I did the same thing. Everything works. I drive it, but I never have had a radio in it. I tried to hook one up, but it didn't work, figured it was my wiring on the radio.
Now I have to figure this out when my leg heals up!
