Are these trucks (sy/ty) always broke?

I had a Typhoon before, but I always seemed to have one problem or another. I'm looking to get another but I'm wondering if they are all just problem children. I'm in the process of trading my 83 Cutlass wagon with a built GN drivetrain for a 1992 Typhoon, but I keep on thinking of the headache I used to have with my last one. Any encouraging thoughts?

Ive had great luck with my Typhoon. Its been pretty trouble free but is mostly stock. I had to put a fuel pump in it recently, and my aftermarket rear springs needed to be replaced. It has 110,000 plus miles.

As far as the sy, its nickname was old reliable. I raced the snot out of that for 60,000 miles it held up till 110,000 miles. A ring land or two failed. Tranny was still working great...

More than staying stock, treating it right will get you further. I abuse my Ty and it breaks constantly.

I don't really beat on my cars so maybe it'll last if I keep it stock.

The one i just got has 164,000 miles and it runs better than my other one with 100,000 miles. 72 year old guy and bone stock= no probs.

I sold my Typhoon last year, with 136k on it, after putting 30k on it myself with little trouble. So far have put about 3-4k miles on my Sy, and just turned over 157k on that one. Both are basically stock trucks.

I guess when you start playing with the boost is when you get the blown motors and leaks. How many of you guys have issues with leaks?

What kinda leak? I still have stock lines to and from the turbo on my Sy. Coolant and oil return lines were both covered in oil. Vacuum leaks are a thing of the past, with new silicone hoses.

I'm referring to oil/coolant/power steering fluid leaks, vacuum/boost leaks aren't an issue.

Hell man anything with high mileage is gonna leak. These definately arent mercedes diesels or 22r motors. They hold up pretty well compared to other turbo motors. My friend just swapped a motor in his gti with 124,000 on it cuz he spun a main bearing.

These things are Hot & Cold.

Mine runs good, but I have had to replace 3 TC's and I don't really abuse it.

I used to have a '93 Sonoma that I beat the snot out of, and it ran just as good at 200K as it did when new...

Hmmm, that wagon sound kinda kwel...

Re: Are these trucks (sy/ty) always broke?

My stock truck has 69k miles on it ... I am sorta scared to mod it , but I have $10k in parts to put into it , lol ... I have to bite the bullet sooner or later.

For your original question, stock = reliability ... OR if YOU mod the engine you will be fine... its when people buy UNKNOWN modded engines that they start to freak out ---

Do these trucks break, leak, and cause major headaches? YES
Is there anything more fun from a dig when they are running? NO
Is it worth it? You betcha!

Re: Are these trucks (sy/ty) always broke?

I keep on seeing recomendations to keep it stock for reliability.

They key for engine life is make sure the engine is running properly through a scan tool and proactively look for problems. A stock engine not running properly will still break it will just break faster if modified. If you do modify your engine, running it in the edge of boost, timing, and fueling (lean) to achieve the most power is going to increase the chance of likely hood of problems. If the engine is modified and you do boost launches, you also have to realize that the transmission, front propshaft and motor mounts are going to be weak points (and will eventually break).
