Autocrossing at Nats 11

Re: Autocrossing at Nats 11

Okay, to give a brief overview of the event, I'll summarize a typical AutoX for those who maybe haven't attended one.

- Registration - This will likely be merged in with event registration.

- Tech Inspection -Our tech will be very laid back (most likely conducted by me, Dobrick, Jeff, whomever), but we want to make sure that your truck is safe (for you and for us) before hitting the course. We'll conduct a visual inspection of safety concerns, looking for obvious things (oil leaks, dry rotted tires, loose suspension items, battery not bolted down, etc....) and also confirm that your truck meets the class you're registered for. Class adjustments for over/underclassed trucks will be made at this time.

- Drivers Meeting - We'll discuss cone penalties, safety concerns, classes, etc.... Any questions you have can be asked at this time. You'll also get your heat/work assignments (more on that below).

- Course Walk - We'll set aside a period of time for you to walk (yes, physically) the course and get a feel for it. This time can be more valuable than seat time in some instances, so use it wisely. Observe braking zones, corner exit widths, etc.... I saw a guy once roll around in an office chair to simulate driving height.....do what works for you.

- Grid/Run (Heat 1) - The first heat will be called to grid (incl all classes in that heat). Your truck will remain in grid throughout the first heat, but you can come and go as you please. Listen out for class announcements, as you'll need to be ready when called. As your class is called, go ahead and make sure you have everything in order (helmet, truck cranks, etc...). The Grid man will motion for you to pull forward and the Cue man will call you to the starting line (this is a lot like street drag racing staging). Once the truck ahead of you is a safe distance into the course (usually half way depending on layout and class), the Cue man will flag you, but the clock won't start until you launch.....if too much time is taken, you be asked to pull to the back of the current class heat. Once your run is complete, pull back into your assigned parking spot in grid and go collect your timeslip. All remains the same for all of your runs.

- Work (Heat 1) - If you're slotted to run in the second heat of the day, then you'll be required to work for Heat 1. Working assignments will be given out at the driver's meeting. While the first Heat is running, you'll be assigned an area of the course to monitor and collect. If a driver strikes a cone you'll grab the cone and wave it above your head (we don't have enough 2-way radios for everybody) towards the judge. A cone is demed a penalty if it is knocked over or is knocked outside of it's chalk boundary but is still standing. If any part of the cone is inside the boundary and it's still standing then it is NOT a penalty....simply reposition it. Also, directional cones are never penalized. It's normal practice for a worker to not sit while working (so you can be ready to move quickly), but we'll discuss this at the drivers meeting.

- Break - Lunch, restroom break, stretch, bare knuckle brawl, Civil War reenactment.....whatever you need to do before you run/work....do it then.

- Grid/Run (Heat 2) - Same as before.

- Work (Heat 2) - Same as before.

- Cleanup - We put the cones down....we gotta pick 'em up.

- Awards/Results - Will most likely be grouped with the overall awards.

If you have any questions, please ask 'em here. You wanna get everything in order to run before driving 1500 miles to the event. Don't leave questions for the drivers meeting.....find out the answers now. Also, if you've never AutoX'd before or haven't done it in ages, browse the following guides to help you get everything in order:

I'll post more once we've hashed out some details.

We can tech for both autocross and drag racing at the same time. Basically guys just bring a safe truck, if your going to autocross get the loose change and stuff from the cupholders, and good idea to remove the drivers side floor mat (you don't want it sticking under the pedals)

Ooo! Oooo! I wanna be Stonewall Jackson.

The setup looks good, but I don't think you'll need the grid setup. Or even to have multiple guys on the course at the same time... you'll have lots of time. Good to have it planned out, though, doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Maybe a really slow parade lap? (Ie, not like Dabney's :) Tough to do this if there are a lot of trucks, though.

Loose sub boxes = bad, also. Tools in side pockets.

Yeah, that was more of a primer for the AutoX uninitiated.....kind of a "typical" meet. Our's will wind up being much less professional....I'm sure. Grid can help to keep people from changing parts (slicks, weight savings, etc...) and make sure the class headcount is accurate (helpful when pressed for time).....none of which will be a problem for us. So, I'm all for a laid back "grid" as I don't see us being too pressed for time nor anyone cheating (otherwise that Civil War reenactment might just happen). :D

Re: Autocrossing at Nats 11

I think a big thing here to note is autocrosses take a lot of volunteers to work the course. Basically anybody that runs will be required to help work the course (which is mostly running to tip cones back upright).

Re: Autocrossing at Nats 11

Are we going to be able to both Drag Race and Autocross?

Yes! You can and we encourage you to do both. The autocross will be at the same time as the track rental, but shouldn't take more than 2-3 hrs. We have the track 8 am -4 pm. Also during class run offs the autoX will not be going on. So if you chose to participate in autoX you will just have to give up some of your open time trial runs.

Re: Autocrossing at Nats 11

Keep the course tight enough to keep the emphasis on driver abilities, rather than engine output. Everyone should have a better time, it will be easier on tires, and the event will determine the best car/driver combo, rather than another drag-race with turns.

I make the comment regarding tires because I presume most of the trucks entered in this event will be driven substantial distances to attend. It's possible to tear the shoulder off a 50-series tread very quickly. Speed has everything to do with the rate of wear. No one wants to have to buy new front tires to get home safely........

Hey, I like the idea of drag race with turns :) Seriously, I do need to think about my tires being able to get me home 1000 miles away.

The autox will be contested in the middle of a 1/8mile oval track. It will be tight and Slower. Everyones tires should be good to go.

Yeah I didn't have my truck in 2001 so I didn't attend GB nats. Only seen pictures of the autoX Dabney set up. But Dabney is a high speed guy. I could see him setting up a high speed course.

Re: Autocrossing at Nats 11

I'm working on the course design now and I assure you that it will be technically challenging. I'm taking a known layout and modifying it for SyTys (e.g...taking out the straight into slalom because me and Duncan don't want to see a Typhoon roll). High speed courses are good if you have the brakes and class car to accommodate it, but would prove detrimental to us, IMO.

Looking at a 65 second-ish course in a stock Miata......so add some time for us.

Re: Autocrossing at Nats 11

I was being "constructive", and I'm sure Dabney would take it that way. I consider Dabney a friend, and wouldn't want anyone to think I was dissing his efforts.
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

I took it as constructive. And this is one of the many things that I have now learned from Dabney. :rotf:

Re: Autocrossing at Nats 11

I'm going to be running in the Solo Dixie National Tour next month at South Georgia Motorsports Park. So, hopefully I'll get some time to talk to the coordinators and possibly some guys from the KY region (Great Lakes Div?).
