AWD T56, I thought SyTy Guys might like to see this.

Hello,

I was looking through the SyTy forum trying to snag some information on driveshafts and I thought, what the heck, I would join and post some pictures of my AWD car that utilizes a SyTy transfercase/front diff.

The car is an 86 XR4Ti with a Turbocharged 331 stroker small block Ford. I wanted to make the car AWD and searched for the best transfercase and finally decided to use a Syclone unit.

Here is where it gets interesting, I wanted it to be a stick, a T56 to be exact. Here is a link to some pictures:
http://home.comcast.net/~xr4x4ti/V8_AWD_Pictures.htm

Basically it is a Viper spec T56 with a Camaro output shaft and shift rod. The tail housing is from a C5 Vette and obviously I made the adapter between the C5 tailhousing and the T-case which houses a Ford Style Pro-5.0 shifter. Even though it is welded together, it was CNC machined after the fact to get everything true and centered.

The car is now totally drivable with about 500 miles on it. To say it goes like stink is an understatement, but you SyTy guys know all about traction :D

It weighs about 3400 lbs just in case anybody was curious.

I will post my driveshaft questions on a different thread.

Thanks,
Tim

Hey,

Thanks for the compliments guys. I am located in Minneapolis MN. I will have to update my profile.

I pretty much made it myself. I had a little bit of help with the final machining, but that was about it. I sourced the transmission from D&D performance in MI. Don Walsh was EXTREMELY helpfull in getting this thing on the road.

My guess is that any compitent welding/fabricating joint could reproduce it. The cost, I don't know? I much interest do you think there is?

Do I spy a Cossie front bumper? You're going to need the hood vents to complete the front-end. Excellent work.

They did. In fact, I belive the one I sent you a link to some months ago was an AWD Cosworth Sierra. There were also non-Cosworth XR4X4s available in Europe for a while. Most of the AWD Merkurs in the states just used parts swapped from the AWD Sierras.

Yup, as Timbo pointed out, they did make an AWD Sierra in Europe. I am using some of the front suspension from an AWD Euro car. This is actaully my second AWD XR4Ti. The first one was still 2.3 powered and used almost all of the production European parts except for the oil pan. I recently sold that car to a guy who is turning it into an AutoX machine.

Europe runs out of Cosworth trannies. All parts are expensive and there are very few cars in good condition. I got a friend with 11.99 in his record and the car is like new. He has a spare tranny though and he drives her on the weekend only.
