A boost control solenoid is bad when it flips you off, pulls its vacuum lines, hobbles into your house, logs onto SyTy.net, and posts maintenance questions in the lounge...

:D Depends how mad they are.

you must be nice to them and keep quality silicone hose available. If not they might send a big fuck you in th form of a work slow-down. The result is uncontrolled boost and subsequent engine failure.

So I think my boost control solenoid tried this earlier today, weird cause I gave it the silicone hoses..

Re: boost control solenoid question

Well this was the only thread I saw an answer to the bad boost solenoid, lol. Curious if the base boost is all that you would get. I have 13v at the connector, wgdc stays at 100% on logs and makes 7-8psi

I would check your wastegate adjustment first. If it is set properly and it doesn't make 8-9psi, I would suspect the catalytic converter.

Would that be intermittent? That's why I figured something electrical. I'm not getting any knock or anything either. No codes, fuel trims are good. This morning it hit 14 just fine, it hadn't been going over 7psi (usually hit 55 kpa) this weekend. Is there something that might work when it's cooler and not work when it's hotter out?

If anyone's able to move this to correct section please do btw.

Re: boost control solenoid question

Try bypassing the wastegate solenoid. Run the vacuum line straight from the turbo to wastegate actuator. It should make 8-9psi if the wastegate arm adjusted to stock specs.

Re: boost control solenoid question

My brother had a cat come apart and roll around inside the case and it would sometimes half plug the case and other times be fine. It was on a 4 cylinder and didn't have the flow of our trucks , so I don't know how they would act.

Re: boost control solenoid question

It's odd that this thread got resurrected when it did. I've been fighting a similar issue lately that I've been trying to figure out with Eric from Turbotweak. Ty makes good boost when I first start it up. But after running for 2-3 minutes it won't make any more than 9ish psi until I park it and let it cool down. Nothing looks weird when logging it, wg is adjusted properly, I think the cat is good. I was planning on asking if there was some way to test the boost solenoid as well.

Re: boost control solenoid question

This may not be your problem but it is something worth bringing up...

The stock solenoid is an air valve.
There is a clip on the lower tube right side just below the A/C belt.
That clip is suppose to have a rectangle foam filter on it to filter the air in/out to atmosphere as the solenoid works. (it is how it breathes)
Many trucks I see are missing the foam filter and that can get clogged up with belt rubber dust and dirt that could make the solenoid stick.

The foam comes with a solenoid as a new part GM Part# 1997152
(OR) foam is available separate as Part# EN10946S set of 3.

Re: boost control solenoid question

Before when I would get 7-8psi, it would sometimes"spike" up to 14psi at 75+mph, then it would kind of erratically bounce up and down. I forgot to add that before.

Tonight I bypassed the solenoid, and I got to 35kpa and it doesn't come in until around 40mph from a stop. So I'm guessing I'll have to adjust the wg rod, but does that seem like the only thing wrong? I just don't get how that would be intermittent like it has been.

Also, is the 1997157 the same as the 1997244?

Stock part # listed on SyTy Authority is GM# 1997152 <--link first part on list.

So I would say that is the correct part.
I typed a 7 instead of a 2...sorry.
The link from that was correct just the number I typed was wrong.

I will edit it in the post above.

Re: boost control solenoid question

I was wondering because I've been running the one I took off my SC 3800 which is the other part number I listed. I've had it on since last year and it seemed to be the same, just cleaner than the one I took off.

I looked it up and found http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=85523 on here, but it doesn't look like they ever tested it.

If nothing else I'll order new foam piece at least, maybe a new solenoid too.

I'll adjust the wg rod first, but I'd like to know why it makes full boost sometimes and not others. Could WG be stock open partially?

I have heard of the wastegate flapper sticking open in some turbo's when hot. Someone may have have adjusted the wastegate to be open inattempt to compensate for this.

Try to get some anti-seize in around the WG arm where it enters to free it up. It may hold up for a while with the heat.

I just read that...Maybe you just tested it...???
If you free up the WG rod and checked your adjustment again and it still does it...I would look at getting the correct part # solenoid.
Do you still have the solenoid you took off 'cause it was dirty looking? Try that one before you buy one.

Re: boost control solenoid question

I'll try some permatex when I can, what about a spray to clean up rust and whatnot? Or is that a bad idea on/near the turbo?

when I put this solenoid on it worked as well as the old one, but it had the foam filter still, but if I can find the old one I'll try it beforehand.

What would stick when it's hot? The actuator or the lever?
