Re: BOWTIE BUILD??? (what is it)---

we tried to order one about 4 months ago and the part number was good and when it came time to actually geting one they came up as discontinued. However we were still able to order the 88 block, aluminum blocks but not the cnc version re 051.

My "bowtie" build up looks like this:

051 Bowtie block
billet crank
billet rods
je pistons
23* bowtie heads
converted carb intake
etc etc...

Costing about $16,000 from intake to oilpan.

I'm not aware of an "88" block, but could be wrong;
there are two cast iron bow tie blocks:
10134387 - 2-bolt iorn main bearing caps
Siamesed cylinder walls
Straight cap bolt orientation
weight = 160 lbs
Semi-machined oil passage system, and

10185051 - 4-bolt steel main bearing caps
Siamesed cylinder walls
Splayed cap bolt orientation
weight = 163 lbs
Fully-machined V8 type oil system

The "051 - as it is often called" has the higher content of nickel
(which indicates higher strength as well); which tends to require more
work/effort if block coatings are used in return passages. There appears to be an
earlier vs. later version of this block as well (the earlier versions being a bit more
heavier/stronger and very sought after).

Lastly, the aluminum versions are:
10134371 - 3.75 Stroke,
weight = 78 lbls

10134351 - 4.00 stroke
weight = 78 lbs.

I suppose if your running a track only truck that would be fiine. But for most of us we would want to drive it here and there or maybe to the track to show what we have, good luck with the over heating problems. ;)

if you do a half fill of hard blok you will not have overheating problems.....i have seen this done on way too many street cars with no side effects as far as cooling goes.

the stock block does not have a provision for a mechanical fuel pump if that is what you are asking.

Early 4.3 have a provision, and the marine blocks do, and Ive seen some late 4.3 astro van blocks with one but only in work vans or conversions

ok i guess what i should have posted was....that the stock block that comes in our trucks with the hardened main caps does not have a provision for the mechanical fuel pump.

Bowtie motors are expensive and are not needed for most high hp builds that we see on the BB. Many high hp stock block builds are seeing 11s and 10s and some on the edge have seen 9s. The extra expense may add some insurance against breakage, but as we all know, we are cabable of breaking almost everything associated with these trucks!

Re: BOWTIE BUILD??? (what is it)---

the only high performance parts available from GM at this time are the 359 18 deg castings, and a couple aluminum blocks. Discontinued but still in the warehouse. All other intakes, blocks, heads, etc have been discontinued, and are completely out of stock. Yes now even the regular production 4.3 blocks are discontinued. :-(

ok, another Q :
is there a way to detect a bowtie block when "in-truck" ?

i'm asking because i got a rebuilt block form houseofperformance , and i was heavily surprised when swapping the engine : recognized the hole for a mech. FP ... next thing i recognized was that there was no thread for the knocksensor (for stock position) - is that a good or a bad sign ?? :dunno:

...so, what block could that be ???

TIA,pat.

Re: BOWTIE BUILD??? (what is it)---

some of the most easily recognizable signs are 1) bowtie emblem on side like john mentioned 2) 1/2" npt hole above timing chain cover for main oiling 3) fuel pump block off plate installed.

but the only way to really tell is check the casting number, and look for the bowtie emblem on the side around the motor mounts.
