As dumb as this sounds is there a truck in getting the starter out I have the bolts out no problem... but I cant figure out how to actually get the damn thing out from the truck it gets stuck on everythign no matter what way I turn it....

try getting to the turbo oil return line on the block under there. major pain..

i agree with Jimmy, you just have to work it.

I got it finally.... thing was a pain... anyways... found out my starter solenoid is toast.

As long as you've got it out, do the purple wire fix on it; $30 in parts and a few hours labor at most.

Ever turn the key and just have click, click, click, click? The purple wire that mounts to the small post on the starter solenoid, and triggers the solenoid to fire runs right by the downpipe. Eventually, it detioriates, or heat soaks after driving a while, and the resistance through the wire is too high to allow ample current to trigger the solenoid, and you get the click click click. HERE is the fix for it. If it hasn't happened yet, it will eventually, and now is as good a time as any to tackle the job.

Re: Cant get starter out

heck, just replace the whole thing with a mini starter. there should be a few threads here about either the cvr mini starter, or the gm smaller starter from (IIRC) a tahoe?

Also, R&R of starter is a lot easier with the torque converter cover off. Unfortunately, that generally also means pulling the front propshaft to get to one of the screws. But, only the first time. Leave that screw off and in the future the TC cover can be removed without pulling the propshaft. Of course, if you follow the advice above (mini starter and/or purple wire fix and/or remote solenoid) you should never have to do it again.

No need to remove prop shaft.Use box wrench 0r 3/8 flex socket on flywheel cover bolt.Yes,ten minute job.

i can't be the only one that doesn't believe in the purple wire bs

the starter solenoid fries sitting next to the downpipe, that's it

the purple wire fix may work for a little while, but unless it's shorted to ground, wires don't just magically partially fail. yea the purple insulation may be brown from the heat, but what's that gonna do to copper stranded wire?

get a CVR mini starter with insulated solenoid for a permanent fix

Nothing 'magic' about it, simple chemistry, physics and metallurgy.

1. Resistance of wire goes up with temperature. This effect is temporary. It returns to normal upon cool-down, but can -and will- contribute to a 'click-no-start' on a hot engine. Heavier guage wire will compensate for this effect.

2, Plastic insulator decomposes at high temperature, allowing increased oxygen contact with wire. Oxidization rate increases with increasing temperature. Copper oxide is non-conductive, so as the wire oxidizes, its resistivity increases, which takes us back to #1.

When I pulled my purple wire, the insulation adjacent to the down-pipe was pretty much gone, and the wire strands were so thin and brittle I could break the wire easily with one twist.

However I agree that the solenoid cooking (which, by the way, is the same failure mechanism as above - degradation of the copper field windings- inside the solenoid) is also part of the problem and should be addressed. I chose the remote solenoid route.

Call it BS if you like but, both my bud and I were both having the dreaded "hot start" problems with our trucks until I installed a remote starter solenoid and removed the purple wire from the equation on both our trucks. That was over three years ago and guess what? NO problems ever since and we both REUSED our OLD starters. We DID NOT REPLACE THEM must have been a fluke that it fixed both our trucks... If you have more money than patience to install a remote solenoid, just buy a new starter to "fix" the problem.

anything copper or wire loses conductivity after being cycled and overheated for extended periods....that's why we run into issues so often with our cap and rotors even if they look perfectly fine.....they get used up....

that purple wire is way closer to the downpipe than the solenoid is.....I still believe the stock purple wire causes issues that can be fixed by replacing it.....

I have a cvr starter in one truck and a 96 454 3/4 ton starter on another and they both appear to be a better choice than the big slow stocker than our trucks come with......you gotta love the cvr though....really cool sounding and doesnt take much energy to spin......
just my :2cents:

Yes.... what Mike said is a wonderful option we have....haven't tried it yet though.....
