Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

So I have gathered.

- Wax and grease remover is good. Start with that.
- 320 grip sand by hand...
- prime...
- Block with 320
- prime
- block with 400
- prime
- block with 600
- PAINT!

Now thats a bit crazy. Im sure the shops dont do that. 14 pieces of cladding and the rear wheel arch just took me about 15 minutes for the 1st sand? You guys are talking DAYS and HOURS and HOURS of work. To being it to a sho pand expect that kind of perfection would be a $10,000 paint job with the $8,000 of labor.

What if i just sand with 320 primed and blocked with 400?

What kind of primer do i use? Regular auto primer? Or is it special flex primer?

What have you guys done?

I was told to use some stuff like this on the cladding and call it a day.

Ok here's the deal. The cladding is wavy. The body is wavy. It will look ok if it's prepped and shot decent, but if you want "perfect" you are in a whole nother area.

The best paint/body guys are either alcoholics or drug addicts, because that's the kind of attention to detail that the job requires. It takes a loooooooong time, and isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for.

So if you want your truck stupid borderline insane straight and absolutely perfect,be prepared to wait a long time and shell out big bucks,or learn to do it yourself.

The other option is to have "okay" paint.

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

Thanks for the input Jimmy.

I just want it to look factory the way GM and PAS made it back in 92. For show car standards factory is CERTAINLY subpar. I dont have the time, money or desire to have a flawless show car. If it were, I wouldnt want to drive it! I plan to drive this truck and make it look showroom new. Then do a show finish on my custom Tyclone and that will sit in the garage most of the time. Unless I need to tow the Typhoon somewhere, Ill use the Tyclone to tow the Typhoon hehe

So what primer do I use on the cladding?

That wax and grease remover is a VERY important step especially if this cladding has ever been waxed. I would actually take ajax and a scotch pad to it before I even did the wax and grease remover.. Then I probably would apply 3+ applications of wax and grease remover..

Not every part will necessarily need 3 coats of primer.. If some of your parts are mostly perfect you will probably be able to get away with one or two coats of primer.. The parts that need more work will take 3 or more coats sanding between each coat..

Make sure that you use a high build sandable filler primer..

Good luck and post lots of pics..

high build sandable primer? Just any auto primer from Autozone or Napa?

Get yourself good primer. I would never skimp on the materials myself, I figured if I was going to spend 3 months (that is what it took me ~30hrs week) to paint my typhoon, no need to skimp on cheap material either.

Yes it is very time consuming. 1 reason I refuse to do paint work for people. On top of it, you can never have a perfect paint job, yet everybody expects if they pay for it, it should be perfect.

I know 8 yrs ago I spent ~$800 just on material, no color change, and just black. Shortly after we painted Paul Schwabs typhoon cladding, took us 4 weekends, 2 of us. Not a weekend project as you have found.

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

for a show quality job 6-9k is about avg.... when i say show quality i mean not a single flaw.

anywhere in the paint.

but could you imagine that much $$$ to have some asshole ding it or a rock flying up and chipping it.... i'll stick with the not show quality...not scared to drive it,real damn good job that if you happen to look at the paint at maybe the right angle with just the right amount light you might see a lil something job. :2cents:

who in the hell want's a truck they are too scared to drive cause it might get dust on it.

Thanks for the replies...

Any suggestions on primers? I dont know what a good one is. The $5 AutoZone one is good, not the $2.50 WalMart primer?

I have head that the cladding paint comes off if its not the right paint. Can i use normal, but good, automotive primer?

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

I buy all my supplies at local paint supply place. I don't consider anything at autozone good. :)

Go in and ask them, they will tell you the different ones, and can suggest for the plastic. On mine I had to use a water based primer since it was never painted. Normal primer would fisheye no matter what I did.

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

did you use rattle can paint and primer?? i just have never had good expereince with any brand rattle can... maybe i'm doing something wrong....

but i do read directions and follow them

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

Ok thats what I was looking for. Just ask a guy at a paint supply place.

I havent sprayed anything yet, but I would like to try and do this at home. Rattle can or no primer for me...

I wasn't talking about rattle can primer.. If you go to a real paint shop and ask for a high build sandable filler primer they will know what you are talking about.. Just FYI when I paint something I like to get all of my supplies from one place that way I can be sure that everything is compatible...

Rattle can paints SUCK. They don't harden like real primer.

Buy yourself a cheap gun, 2 part primers and a good mask.

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

that's what i thought...just wanted to clarify...and keep in mind i only use the rattle can for small parts....maybe a washer or the head of a bolt that's not going to be seen.

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

Ok in that case I'll just take it to the paint shop and hope they know what they are doing with my freshly sanded and epoxyed cladding. Cause Im not spraying here and risking more city or HOA issues... Already have a friend who was caught a couple months back trying to spray some paint in the city limits... Ack...

I have enough projects. This is one I dont need.

Thanks guys

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

Do you guys know if you can use icing on the plastic (glaze) to make it nice and straight ?I am doing my sy as we speak and I purchased all ppg deltron cost $1800 and I am painting it phamton black the same color as my 05 gto .This would be a round about price because this color wasn't much more than the orginal black .Good Luck !!

Re: Cladding Paint Prep: Sanding, priming, blocking, shooting...

I wouldnt use a glaze on the cladding. Its ok to use on a minor nick, but you'd risk a chance of it cracking with just a light bump, even with just a skim coat. I'd either use Evercoat's Feather Fill or a nice high building primer. I thought Dupont's Ero primer was the best, but its dicontinued, so Ive been using thier chroma premier primer and its nice.
Phantom Black is a nice color, but my wife wants me to paint her GTO solid black because next to my black WS6 it looks grey. I like the metallic, just a bitch to blend.
