What kinda work and money would I need to do to turbocharge and lower that generation of mini trucks. The engine wouldn't be the hard part, I wouldn't think. But the drivetrain and suspension would be all off road if I wanted to make a awd turbo truck, which is really what I want. Give me your input, cause I think this would be a great 2nd car/daily driver/sleeper : ).

you need to start out with a 4x4 s-10 for the AWD. the output shaft is different on 2wd and 4wd th700r4s. or you just buy a syclone.

2nd that motion....

save the money.
save the headache.
save the fustration.

there are many decent sytys around between the 9000-11,000 range you can pick up.

granted, you might not get a jem...but hell, at least you'll have the real thing and be able to possibly save one from being used as parts or hauling horse poop....

i just picked up a sweet rare color CLEAN ty for 11gs....

they are out there, just gotta look.

9g's is so cheap...

I would pick up any SyTy if I found one locally for that much - THEN worry about explaining why I needed a 3rd car... ;)

These trucks are cursed
Ya know i cant believe how much this topic comes up... everytime i go to the track, some kid in an S-10 tells me he wants to turbo his truck... its not as easy as throwing it on and calling it a night. not to mention putting a turbo on a 2WD S-10 is gonna get you no where. i could barely keep the tires from breaking loose when i had my propshaft out, and thats with only 65% HP, on an S-10 youd be going through 1 tire a week, not to mention your engine and tranny would be gone not too much later. Dont be a ricer, and put a shit load of cash into a car/truck just to try and break outta the 15s... research, study, and do it right the fist time... if you want a turbo S-10 then just get a syclone.

Well actually if you had a 4.3 v6 with a stick in it, bought a good rear end and put on some big sticky tires It could be in the 14.s if you knew how to drive it. And it would be smart to put a smaller turbo on it so you dont have all the power right away and just spin the tires. but that is still a lot of work. but you dont want to do a half ass job and make it look bad. Get a sy. if you dont wanna hastle.

yeah, i realize how much 9 grand is... its 9 grand.

take a look at classic blue book and fill in the information for a 85k good condition sy.. its worth $15 according to them.

15 down to 9 is a big jump. 9 grand aint shit for a good clean syclone compared to what the market value is.

by the time this kids wastes his money trying to make an S10 a "clone" and the time spent, he could already have been sporting a decent syclone...

my .02 cents. if you want a syclone, save yourself the time and money and buy a damn syclone.

Before I got the Syclone I "played around" with an S10 pickup. By the time your done with the engine swap / trans upgrade, new rear, tires/rims, etc. you will DEFINATELY spend more than you think. That doesn't include ANY cosmetics yet and no upgrade to AWD. IT IS DEFINATELY cheaper to buy a Syclone. I KNOW because I have the 86 S10 sitting on the side of my garage and an engine in the garage, wheels in the shed...etc. It all adds up VERY VERY quickly.

I'm new to the Sy/Ty community  so don't flame but what about the 4x4 blazer/jimmys that have the V8 conversions? Does this just throw the weight factor out? Still AWD ... Good HP? I always wondered this?? Also from what I've read on the design on the Syclones, didn't they have to change the way the frame was routed to allow for the turbo (downpipe?) So wouldn't this cause aproblem for someone that just wanted to "throw one on?"

Hmmmm thats funny my 1993 Sonoma with a stock Typhoon motor and 20G ran 12.25's @112 at over 4000'. Best 60' was 1.65 on Hoosier pro quick times.

But really if I had to do it all over agian I would just save your money for a Sy or Ty. I love AWD there is no comparison. If I was going to build a 1/4 only machine then I would convert a 2wd Sonoma.

The reason I want to build a newer body s10 is because I think the sy and ty's are ugly and a boosted awd s10 would be something different and rare. I knew it would be expensive, i just wanted to know what type of money it would take. I'm still very interested in doing this, but I guess I'm not going to be learning much here, sad cause you guys would've been the best help I could've gotten. I was just asking what it would take. This kid drives a modded grand national, I know what I am talking about when it comes to building a turbo engine.

there are so many sy/ty specific parts i dont even feel like listing them all.

um.....
lets see.

main caps. (or you could go 4 bolt)
dished pistons (again, i would go aftermarket forged)
upper and lower intake manifold, with fuel rail and injectors. (we like the 50lb injectors from PTE though)
fuel injection harness.
ECM and MEMCAL (brian green makes some really crappy chips)
exhaust manifolds (ATR makes some also.... for $1000)
turbo and downpipe (precision turbo makes a really nice kit but i doubt the down pipe would work on your truck)
the intake and crossover. (we throw those in the trash too. wouldnt work on your truck anyway)
upper and lower intercooler and intercooler pump/wiring and relays (or buy a kennebell air to air intercooler for $1,200)

ok im tired. someone else finish his shoping list for him. im sure there are 10 other things i missed.

Allright! For a bunch of guys who supposedly know so much, it doesn't sound like anyone is going to help you. Take a gander at what we're doing on www.blazinlow.com I feel you on the "ugly" issue. I don't agree, but some people don't like the '80's "stoner mobile" boxy body style.
For a 2nd Gen Tyclone/ Syphoon I'd start with a 4.3 4X4. If your gonna do it you ought to use an X cab. The biggest complaint of Sy owners is how small they are.
My goal is an AWD twin turbo LS1 V8 in a 4 door '99 Sonoma with a long bed. It will be fully bagged and have 3.73's up front and 4.11 posi with discs and 4 link with 3rd panhard shock (5 link). Extreme ground FX. a Envoy bumper cover. Cadi Tail lights. A flush bed cover, and a'91 Z28 F-40 high rise wing. I will put 8 JL Audio W7's in the bed in a plexi blow through. I allready have the bed with cover, lights, wing, and body dropped 4 inches. I have the bumper cover, enough Extreme ground effects to cut and paste for a 4 door, the rear end, and the lowering upper control arms. Now all I need is to find a wrecked 4 door S-10 or Sonoma. 20's will look so good on it. It will be done by 2005.

Karkid:

Mike McCoy has a late model sonoma with a sy motor that is 2wd and they had a few issues in the conversion but not too bad.

I think you could do for around $45k. Which is really almost pocket change once you look at some of the hard cash poeple put into thier sy's and ty's around here. I have nearly 37k into my sy (that including me buying my sy with 27k on the odometer) and Im NO-where near being done. I still have to do coilovers and brakes and block and speed pro. So, in other words about another $15k. Here is the real ass kicker, when im all done Ill still just have a sanoma!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That doesnt even come close to whats in the buick (my family dragster) If you want a racer sleeper type car put about $30k into your buick and then go buy a Kia to drive for a daily.
