Re: Convertor doesnt lock up.

well one place to check is the wiring in the valve body....doing this w/o a lift/pit is not fun. Also check the plug going to the tranny, maybe you just failed to plug it in. Its a square 4 prong white connector.

Have you fooled with your ECM lately? When I moved my ECM to the glove box, I broke off a wire and the convertor would not lock. Can't remember now which one it was, but it would be an easy thing to check.

So if i have power and it still doesnt work by jumping it is my conv. at fault?

Check the 'brake' fuse. This is where the TCC gets its power.
Check that the brake light switch is adjusted correctly.

If these are OK, check the purple wire at the trans. Should be 12V with key on, brake off. OV with brake applied.

If OK, plug trans in. Use a drywall screw to pierce insulation on tan/blk wire, and short to ground, key on. Solenoid should 'click'. If OK, try grounding tan/blk @ ALDL. Should have same result.

Some ideas....

Agreed the most common problem I see with GM not getting TCC lock are from the brake switch.

Curious about this to. After rebuilding my trans. the TC would slip causing an annoying vibration so I disconnected the solenoid. Different situation but it would be nice info to know if this TC problem was ever fixed?

Rexxenexx, do you have a high stall converter? Is it an original SyTy 1LHM-3LHM core & valve body?

I have a 1985 NON-syty 700R4 with a 2700 RPM converter and my TC makes an awful vibration but I pinpointed the problem. The built trans was shifting too early, so I would get into 4th gear (and lockup) at only 38 MPH, at very low RPM (1000-1500 RPM) which is unusually low. I had to recalibrate my valve body and governor for higher shift RPM (back similar to stock shift points) and it solved the issue.

Food for thought depending on your situation. One way to test would be to hold 3rd gear manually "D" until 50 MPH and see if it still causes a vibration when the TCC locks, even in 3rd?

Re: Convertor doesnt lock up.

I have a Hughes 10" 3000 Stall Lockup Torque Converter and the guy who rebuilt my trans didn't know wtf he was doing so it's like a raped econobox transmission now. He put Alto Red clutches and a shiftkit even though I said "No Typhoon owner would put a shiftkit" but he did anyway. Lucky I kept the stock springs and other parts he swapped out. I was on a budget then to just get the Ty moving.
Hopefully I get in contact this summer with a guy on this board who was going to help me sort the Ty out, but that sounds exactly like my prob. It did seem like it was engaging too early.

SO how did you resolve this........

Re: Convertor doesnt lock up.

My trans is still a raped POS. The Ty is gathering dust outside, but I'll get to it soon. I'm rewiring my Mustang and changing the carpet, Aaand swapping Viper alarms, AAAAAAAAAAnd swapping fan controllers, and some other BS like swapping the AOD pedal assembly to a manual assembly, and installing an Alpine Impulse EQ and figuring out 5 min ago that its incompatible with my head unit. Fantastic! Awesome! Where's the C4!?!?

Anyways, after this project I'll focus on the Ty.
