Cutting out panel in Sy bed for fuel pump......

replacement. This seems like a fine idea but I hate to cut the bed. I have the hole dimensions and location and it seems like a much quicker and easier solution. What's everybody's thought on this?

Thanks

IMO, it's not that bad of an idea. Hopefully you will only have to replace it only once or possibly twice so you have to ask yourself, is it worth it to cut up your bed for only a 1 or 2 time deal.
But if it's done right and looks good I think it would be a nice and easy access for the future if any trouble comes along

I understand your post but it seems like such an easier method to access the fuel pump. I read some previous posts and know a few guys here have done this on their Sy and Ty's too. Just looking for some opinions here.

Just take the bed off. Unplug the tail lights, take screws out of gas fill neck, remove groung strap, remove bed bolts, get 2 50 gallon barrels or saw horses and a friend.

I say do it his way for a few reasons.

1. perfect time to wash and wax between cab and bed.
2. you can also clean the frame.
3. also a great time to check other things under the bed that you can't usually see.

And I can tell you this, it will be ton easier to remove the sending unit ring with the bed off. It will be rusted on. You will have to replace the ring and gasket.

Not long at all. Maybe 1/2hr to 45 mins. Make sure you have a friend to help lift it off and then set it ontop of something. DO NOT LET IT SIT ON THE CLADDING, IT WILL BREAK!

Thanks, then why do people state that it's going to take " a full day" to replace the Sy fuel pump. Seems like the whole job should take 2-3 hours....no?

Dude.. Take the bed off.

Anyone with mechanical ability that is greater than a head of cabbage can take a syclone bed off in ~15 minutes. Anyone with the mechanical ability of a head of cabbage or less can operate a saw to cut a hole in the bed  .

Once the bed is off then it takes ~15 minutes to swap the pump out....and thats being VERY generous with the time allotment.

Yeeesh... and to think I get called a freakin hack. Sorry if I sound like Im flaming you but its down right stupid to cut a hole in the bed of a sy to replace the fuel pump. Period.

I never said I was going to hack the bed, I was simply posing a question. See, I looked in the search for fuel pump replacement and this is one of the ideas that came up. I also stated that I hated the idea of doing it. Again, I read that it was an all day affair. I now understand it takes far less time. I am going to pull the bed this weekend to replace the pump.

Damn, you have to careful around here!!!!!

they tell you to take the bed off because they dont have a lift!

If you have a lift then the job is literally NO BIG DEAL.

btw i have a lift :D

Cool.. I think you are mistaking the amount of work it takes to swap out the FP on a Typhoon for a sy. The fuel tank arangement on a Ty is COMPLETELY different from a sy in which case cutting an access hole in the floor of a ty might be a neccesity(sp?) rather than an option. The biggest reason (IMO) is due to the fuel line fittings rusting and becoming siezed which would cause the line(s) to twist and/or crimp when you tried to loosen them. Unlike a sy you cant easily lift the body up to get good access to the lines to make sure they dont get damaged. A sy on the other hand is 100 times easier to do by taking the bed off so you have full access to the lines and lock ring that holds the pump and sending unit assembly in the tank.

So.. Cutting a hole in the floor of a Typhoon is acceptable because:

You will save your sanity and slightly more skin on your knuckles.
You wont crimp the lines trying to get them loose.
You can see if any of the lines/fittings need replacing.
You cant lift the back of a Ty up/remove the body easily.

Cutting a hole in the bed of a Syclone is NOTacceptable because:

You can take the bed off in ~15 minutes with hand tools.
Taking the bed off accomplishes all the things above plus some without hacking a hole in your truck.

wanna let me borrow that lift of yours? I would have to assume you are right about the lift. I unfortunetley don't have one! Thanks for the feedback.

I completely dissagree.. I take the bed off to keep the fuel lines from getting twisted which cuts down on the amount of fuel the pump can push through the line, which can cause a lean condition, which causes detonation, which causes the pistons, rods, and/or bearings to exit their designated position.

Take the bed off or fight knock retard for a month before you blow the engine up or figure out whats causing KR. My vote is for removing the bed.

i would but at the moment my sy is on it. to remove the trans.

shafts are off, fluid is out. It will probably be like this for 2-3 weeks while i make decision on what to put back into it and get it done.

if you can hold off then afterwards ...no problem!

Ed,

I was only kidding, I'll do the "put the bed on a set of sawhorses idea". I do appreciate the offer nonetheless.

I think it took longer to read this post than it would to take the bed
off!

FWIW, I did my pump on my ty without cutting the floor, dealing with the
rusty lines, not breaking anything, and it only took 3hours.

Bob.. I am with you.. no hole cutting.. lots of cussing.. BY MYSELF, first time.. about three hours... and all of the rumors you hear about it being a pain in the ass are completely true.

I am going to sump the tank and go to another pump... this is something I am not looking foward to doing again.

Just loosen the nuts on the passenger side of the bed, and remove the ones on the driver side. Lift the driver side up and put a jackstand or something between the frame and bed. That'll hold the bed up so you have easy access to the top of the gas tank without having to mess with completely removing the bed. Someone here posted a pic of that, and it seems like a really good idea. When I did mine (before that pic), I removed the bed...

A lift would be helpful if you're dropping the tank to do it. But there isn't much slack in the lines, so dropping the tank can screw that up. It seems a whole lot easier to go at it from the top, especially if you don't even have to remove the bed.

While you're changing the pump, you might want to consider buying a Racetronix harness (or making your own). A lot of people need to put in a bigger fuse when they upgrade the pump. This is the ECM B fuse. Personally, I don't want to put any more strain on the stock circuits, considering some people have problems until they hotwire their ECM and stuff like that. The Racetronix harness uses the stock fuel pump circuit to flip a relay. The relay feeds power to the pump directly from the alternator. This is also supposed to give it higher voltage, which means it pumps more fuel. It's all plug and play right into the stock circuit, so you don't have to chop anything up or flip four switches or anything crazy like that.
