Debating on selling my Typhoon

Like the title says I am debating on selling my crap box. It has just become a headache. I have had it for a year now about put about 6k in it on top of the 9800 I paid to buy the POS and a line has to be drawn somewhere. I can't seem to get it running right and after putting a new engine in it I feel like I have come to the end of my rope. I have wanted a Typhoon since I was a kid but damn I haven't had one enjoyable drive in it.

I hate to say it but I kinda feel defeated with this thing. I am to the point of throwing it on ebay and cutting my losses cause my love for it is pretty much dying.

Just thought I would share since you guys feel the pain of ownership with these things.

The way these trucks are, its worth it to save up for an extra "however long it takes" to get a truck that has lower miles, and is rust free in good running order. The extra 4-5K you might have to spend up front, on a nicer syty will save thousands of hours, thousands of dollars, and keep you sane all at the same time. I wish i would have bought a rust free truck in hindsight.

Good luck on what ever you decide to do, and i would say at this point you owe it to yourself to try and finish it and enjoy it. If you can get it running decent, and still want to sell it, at least you will get some of your money back out of it.

Well selling a truck that doesn't run right is gonna cost ya more than to fix it. Why doesn't is run right? What are the issues? Maybe we can help? Any links to threads you started needing help?

Phantom knocking noises, rough running, fouls plugs after 20 minutes of running yet the FP is only at 38, timing seems to advance and retard for no real reason and a vibration that seems to only happen between 2000 and 3000 rpms at certain amounts of throttle.

I think I have a couple of bugs left to work out since putting it back together and it is just frustrating. I am probably just pissed off right now because I have to haul it 6 hours back to my folks house tomorrow but now that I am out of the Army (I don't really consider being in the Reserves the Army, haha.) and I am just a bum college student I will have some free time this summer to try and iron everything out.

You guys are right though, selling it is a bad call. If anything I can just slow the pace of getting it back on the road and when it happens it happens.

Datamaster? Tunerpro? What injectors? I had problems in the past with my truck and invited other syty'ers over for beer and Nacho's. We were able to collectively work out all the problems in hours by swapping out parts from other trucks that worked. Have a get-together. Contact peeps in your area. Get a datamaster log and share with the community. I bet your vibration is caused when your TC locks up and your engine starts to misfire. That misfire is transfered into the drive train.

If your fouling plugs that quickly at 38 psi fuel pressure, id have to ask if the ultimate chip your running is set up for the injectors you're running. Is the chip set up for stock heads or l35's?

Coordinate with Jeff Scott to spend a day with it. You could have it to him in 3 hours and he is an impressive tuner, so I am betting he can create a smile on your face.....just a thought.

93typhoon- I am on the same page. Don't feelbad. Its been a year and some change- new motor and all. I have not had my truck run right either. I have too tossed the idea around of unloading the truck as well. All I need is some one who knows the tuning end of these as well. Thats about it. seems like its the end. Dont sell it. Park it for when you have sometime and another person who knows something about tuning.

I feel your pain, man! Sorry this is happening to your truck but consider the loss you'll take if you choose to sell now? Be patient and if you feel you've reached a dead end, find someone who trully knows these trucks, and have him work on it.

Re: Debating on selling my Typhoon

I think going code59 and having a good tuner spend a couple of hours on your truck will resolve most of your issues. I know it worked for me. Best of luck and I would not sell it either, you are almost there.

Sometime you just need to go through these trucks systematically. The motor has been swapped. Did you check to see if the engine grounds are connected? Is the timing set properly and have you verified TDC. Does it have the right spark plugs in the motor? Are the plugs wires good and not resting on he downpipe?

Re: Debating on selling my Typhoon

I've been there man... in fact, I am there. Talk to me after you overpaid for a truck that turned out to have a blown motor, only to have it sit in the garage for 5 years while you make payments and pay full coverage insurance on it, and then have it sit for another 2 years after that before you finally get around to swapping the motor because you're so disgusted by the whole situation. This POS has a LONG way to go before it makes me smile. Right now it's sort of making up for the last 7 years of hatred.

Think it over though. Consider the money you've put into it, and how much more you may need to put into it to get it running right. Then take a look at the market, realistically determine what you can get for it (not the pipe dream BS we all THINK our trucks are worth) and show me something that you can make just as fast or faster for the same amount of money, that's not as much of a POS as your Ty. There are plenty of cars out there that are just as fast or faster, but they're all a dime a dozen and most of them probably have more problems than your Ty..

At the end of the day, these trucks are 22 year old money pits. If you didn't already know that before buying it, then you didn't do your homework. Something will always be broken and something will always need to be done to it. Anything less than 5 years old with the same performance is gonna cost ya at least double what your Ty is worth.

All depends on your bank account and your tenacity. This POS has long lost its novelty and it's coolness factor for me. I'm only in it now, because I'm not gonna let it defeat me. I'm on a mission. Once I proclaim victory, I will total it beyond all repair so it can no longer infect the world with its headaches and delusions of grandeur. Until that day, I'll continue listening to the back window squeak, the suspension clunk, engine knock, and try to enjoy it 12mpg at a time.

Re: Debating on selling my Typhoon

Well I have all my stuff from Moates to switch it to code59 and then I'll probably look into T-Bone's suggestion of contacting Jeff Scott.

To answer some of the questions posed I have verified the timing multiple times and checked grounds, connectors, wiring and ignition.

Someone posed the idea of the Ultimate chip not being configured for my truck and that sounds like a reasonable idea. I have no way to verify what the chip in it is set up for but its coming out. Maybe that will start me on the road to success.

Thanks for all the support though I think I had all but talked myself into a for sale sign and that would have sucked when the next guy spent a day getting it worked out and enjoyed all of my time and effort. So the joys continue. I'll keep you guys posted on what comes of it all. Worst thing that can happen is it sits for a bit.
