Distributerless ignition with remote coils?

There has been a lot of discussion on it. I've even emailed a guy that had it working supposedly with all GM parts. He wrote me back with the, "it does nothing for performance so don't see the point in telling people how to do it" and didn't tell me anything about what it actually took to make it happen  .
Is there anyone that has actually got the distributerless "coil per cylinder" setup working with the stock ecm and doesn't mind telling how to do it in a how-to or something? I know Nick would do it but don't know if he would have time to put it together.
Thanks.

It takes the following parts.

Mallory crank trigger 648 for evenfire V6

6.25 fluid dampener

Edist box part number 30-5001 (for LS1 coils)

1996 up Vortec cam sensor

6 LS1 coils

heat sink material

The crank trigger takes some maching to mount but works great I have some pics that I took of my install and will do a write up with pics when things slow down here. The crank trigger is set up at 0 degrees. Also you must use the aftermarket dampener as it has a machined step on it that centers the crank trigger wheel.

The crank trigger signal gets sent to the stock ignition module where the
old distributor signal was conected. I have mounted the stock module on a piece of heat sink.

The 1996 cam sensor drops in and the signal get sent to the Edist box.
The est signal from the stock ECM gets sent to the edist box as well. The rest of the wiring is power and such for edist, cam sensor and coils.

I have my cam sensor setup at 5 degrees ATDC so that the crank and cam sensor signals can never cross. The number 4 cly is set as the A coil.

I can go thru the wiring diagrams for more in depth wiring details but it is very strait forward.

You can use this set up on the stock ecm or the FAST (not set up for crank trigger) But it you have a FAST I would get it changed for the crank trigger to make for less wiring and you can get rid of the module.

yep 1996 plus v6 came with this. If you cannot find one I think Tony has 4 or 5 laying around.

I am just waiting for my crank trigger and instead of using the stock dist I am going to use the MSD cam sensor plug.

I am just copying what Nolan is doing other that the MSD part... he and Tony have all of this high tech shit figured out.. :drinking:

Well, my first post!! I've been reading for a while and am only begining to learn a lot!! :D

Canadian SY/TY: I hope you don't mind, I'll probably be emailing you about this!! I have a 2.2L Sunfire that I put a turbo on last year, I have blown the engine twice now and am working at hooking up the 749 ecm to be used on my 2.2L OHV DIS.

I think I'll try hooking it up in conjunction with the stock pcm and use the 749 to control my WI, until I get the hang of this tuning thing!!

Hey guys me and Tony where thinking about offering a group buy on this.
We added up all the parts needed on my truck as well as machining and such. This is for the guys that want a bolt on kit sent to there door.
We will still be puting up a web page how to but this is for the guys that want the easy way to do it .

It would include.

Crank trigger modded for our app
Edist
Module heat sink kit
Pulley alinger
Modded fluid balancer
Modded Accessory braket to mount crank trigger
Modded valve covers for LS1 coils
LSI coils
Pre made ignition wire or half Done for headers
Wiring harness for coils and install
96 up vortec cam sensor distributor
and all instucitions to make it easy as pie to
install.

You could spec powder coat color of valve covers.

From the top of our heads after sitting in the garage and adding all the stuff up it would be around $2000 US.

It amazed me too how much it cost but there are lot of parts there.

We are not doing this for sure but just more looking for how many would be interested.

Thanks

Gains are hard to say. But I do know that I have run 30psi with .40 gaped TR5's with out any problems. All I do now is change plugs after running a bunch of race gas other wise I would not have to change plugs.

The point of this had nothing to do with HP gains. It had to do with reliability. I guess HP gains would be a side benefit in that your ignition wouldn't be breaking up every other time you got into boost.

Do you have any part numbers for this stuff? Some of it I may be able to get from a local dealer (parts manager is an old high school buddy and former firefighter) at a good cost. Let me know the part numbers and I'll shoot you prices so you can see if its worth it to use him or not.

Any word on the write up. I bought all the stuff before you posted this. I am still waiting on my Crank trigger that has been BO'd for 4 weeks now. Just trying to get it all straight before I do it.

Thanks

I will get some thing up here in the next month. I am very busy right now we are building one truck right now and have about 4 more and could be doing a LS1 camero. I will not be doing the kit due to lack of time. But I will work on the how to page for you DIYers.

Nick,

I talked to the guy I ordered mine from and he got on the horn with mallory. They have 2 on BO. (Yours and Mine) He climbed up someones ass there cause he called me back and said that it should be shipped in the next 2 to 3 weeks. I will contact them again next week and see where they are and let you know. I am in the same boat as you. I have everything else, just waiting on the crank trigger.

Thanks

Anyone gotten one of these crank triggers yet....?

After 5 months of nothing I finally canceled my order.

They said there was no telling when they were going be making more.

FWIW, may not apply here - used an MSD crank trigger on my hybrid ignition system for the 383 SBC. Good piece, nice setup, dead nuts on. No need really for the COP or CNP here, as the dist cap is a *huge* crab style. Crank trigger pulses the stock SyTy ignition module very nicely, easy conversion, too - details on request.

Yeah.. if I had a V8 there are ALL kinds of them around.. the ones you have suggested are great looking pieces.. the only other option at this point for me is to buy one of the universal ones and make that work.
