Do any other GM radiators fit syty's?

Radiators that don't have plastic end tanks....I won't be using our upper/lower shroud for the radiator hold down so we're kinda flexible on the mounting....I deleted the engine oil cooler, heater and even trans cooler so those connections don't matter to me...what matters is the in and out cooling hose positions....A friend of mine recently did a 350 sbc swap into a 96 4 cyl. s10 and he told me the best (closest fit) replacement radiator for his setup ended up being stock radiator for a 1990 V8 camaro....The bad ass aluminum radiators seem a little expensive to me and I want a black one anyway....

I also plan on installing an electric fan....which is the latest greatest junkyard fan to use? one that incorporates a shroud and covers most of the radiator....I've read about taurus fans here but has anyone found anything better? TIA

Well, 'vette radiators are commonly used in V8 conversions, but dunno if they have plastic end caps. Only info I have on fans is the Taurus. JTR likes them the best, next to an engine-driven fan.

not to skew the topic but how are you getting by with no oil coolers?

I'm sure he plumbed externals...

I measured my brothers radiator out of his Corvette and it seems to be able to fit in there.

As far as fans......I've purchased the Taurus fan and also have ordered the Ramchargers fan setup as well. I still haven't received it yet, but I can post back when I do. If the Ramchargers fan doesn't do a good enough job, I'll switch to the taurus fan.

if you have ever bought an external cooler it says in the instructions to use your stock cooler and plumb the external unit on the return line. i've done 3 including the b&m i just put on my sy and they have all recommended the same thing. so i was just wondering what is the advantage if any to bypassing the radiator tanks?

I have seen both (local guy has ramchargers setup, and I have Taurus setup on my S10).....both seem to work fine, and do a good job cooling.....With the nod going to the ramchargers setup IMO based on it being brand new and relatively inexpensive.

As for the radiator, what about one for a late model 4.3 S-series? They are rather large, have the black endtanks (plastic though), and would most likely handle the cooling you need, as well as have to correct inlet/oulet positions.

Yea, I set up external coolers....I'm monitoring the tranny temp via an autometer gauge and the engine oil temp is under control.....

thanks for the info....I think I'll just take my radiator down to the parts store and look through their radiators....

#2875,
The main advantage to deleting my engine oil cooler, was that it made room to locate my battery on the driver's side....I'm using a much better cooler than our radiator could ever offer...some people say it costs you a small amount of horsepower if your oil is too cool, but I'm not concerned about that and I don't think mine is too cool.... I'm on this quest to make my syclone easier to work on and finally making some progress...

Dan,

Is one supposed to be better than the other? Seems like the ramchargers fan draws alot of juice from what I've read here....

Rick,

You can't beat an engine driven fan/shroud setup, but I need some room to plumb a front mount I/C and I'd like to be able to reach over my running motor without the thought of the fan coming loose and chopping my head off.... :D

I'll hunt for a taurus fan and if I can't find one I'll get the ramchargers...

As for the radiator, I feel like the passenger side endtank is going to crack anytime I've had to put pressure on it when plumbing an intake setup for the turbo...also, that heater hose port is kinda in the way...mainly I want tougher end tanks if I can help it even though I've never cracked a stock one....

Have you tried a local radiator place? I know Ropels (local) will make end tanks for you if you bring them the radiator core. I would think they could convert a plastic ended tank to a metal ended tank somewhat easily.

Anyone know the measurments of the 1990 V8 camaro radiator and how many cores?

have a look at this from Universal parts on E-bay. it doesn't have the oil cooler but it does have it for the trani.

doesn't look too bad....I searched locally for radiators today, but 95 percent of the stocked ones had plastic endtanks...pricing was around the 175.00 average...The ebay one you posted is definitely worth considering though...I need to recheck the pricing on the griffins...Taffy posted some pricing not too long ago....

I seem to remember the Griffin being like $500. or something crazy like that. Be Cool has one also for $370 or so.

Re: Do any other GM radiators fit syty's?

Hey Guys....

As far as aftermarket radiators go, Be Cool ones are really pricey. They seem to start at $500 and go up from there. I don't know about you, but I can't justify a $639 radiator.

However, Summit has a bunch of other choices....Griffin race radiators start at ~$190 (for 2 rows of 1" tubing) or $260 (for 2 rows of 1.25" tubing) and are available in a bunch of sizes. Summit brand radiators are a couple bucks cheaper. Howe radiators start at about $200. Jegs has similar offerings and similar prices. Most of these look to be all aluminum radiators (no plastic tanks)

Haven't used any of these, so I can't speak for quality or anything along that lines, but figured I'd mention what is listed.

Re: Do any other GM radiators fit syty's?

hmmm...I was under the impression that griffins were much higher than that....here's a quote by Taffy in a thread from the gp section....

"The 400 HP unit with either no coolers, or just a tranny cooler is $399.

The 400 HP unit with both coolers is $499.

The 600 HP unit with either no coolers, or just a tranny cooler is $460.

The 400 HP unit with both coolers is $579."

I'd like to get the best I can find for around $250.00....I never really had cooling issues before, but with the electric fans, that may change now....

Kreepinty,

what year vette is that from?

Re: Do any other GM radiators fit syty's?

I had the BeCool 65012 that is for V8 conversion S10s. It doesn't have a trans cooler, but only cost $280. We put it in the TyStang, so I picked up another BeCool from a local used for $75. I don't know what problem you're having with the stock Plastic/Al, they seem to work just fine for me in my other trucks.
