Do these spark plugs look ok?

#1 and #3 look not to bad, the rest are lean. Bring that damn thing to Winnipeg so I can hook up a datamaster to it already.

I ordered my cable last week so i should get it this week, as soon as it arrives i will use some free runs to scan it.

If the truck is lean will turning up the fuel pressure help any?

If it's as lean as those look, you'd need a *lot* of fuel pressure.

IMO this is a lot of jumping to conclusions before SY2767 gets his ALDL cable and gets the truck on a scan tool to see what problem exists IF ANY.. I guess everyone has their own opinion on the black art of reading spark plugs, but I think they look OK!! Maybe a little lean, but maybe not. There is a tan coloration to them and I have pulled a lot of plugs out of my truck over the years that looked very similar to SY2767's.

Bottom line - reading spark plugs is 1960's technology. Reading scan tool data is 1990's technology and reading Wideband O2 is 2000's technology. The more evidence you collect, the easier it becomes to draw accurate conclusions.

Re: Do these spark plugs look ok?

Well i put new plugs in the truck and managed to ruin 2 plug wires trying to get them off the old plugs and re snap them on the new ones (don't ask how), i still had the old set kicking around so i replaced them. Now it has a misfire that i didn't have before i started this problem solving. By trying to track down one problem i have created another, i would burn this ****ing thing to the ground but insurance wouldn't cover my losses. Oh well, time to by another set of MSD wires and start over.

Since I bought the $10 Taylor Plug Wire Pulling Tool from Summit, my broken plug wire boot's have dropped by about 50%. (They still break once in a while but not nearly as often as they used to without this tool.) If you're dropping $60/set on MSD wires it might be worth considering.

Re: Do these spark plugs look ok?

They look a bit lean to me, but they also look 1500 miles old for a stocker.

Re: Do these spark plugs look ok?

IMHO Does some of the "color" look like it's been chipped off? Sharp line of the color on plug 4, middle picture. That "could" be a sign of knock. Keep yur foot out of it until you get the scan tool rigged up. Regardless they look a bit lean to me as well. All my :2cents:

The plugs were taken out after you were just cruising around? Freeway speeds, city traffic?

Where the plugs pulled when you stepped on it for a while (WOT) ,chopped the throttle, turned off the ignition, then plulled out the plugs?

I'll throw my $.02 in here.
I'll agree with Tooky on his opinion that they do not look bad. Have to remember a few things. First, I am looking at an internet photo. Although a very good photo, it's not the same as if I was there with my mag. scope.
Today's unleaded fuels do not leave allot of color like the leaded fuels of yesterday (The #1 plug with leaded fuel would be considered near perfect. Might be looking for a slight bit more of a rusty brown). I certaintly would not consider #1 to be lean.
Our intake manifolds do not flow 100% even to all cylinders so to expect all the plugs to have the exact same coloring would be wishful thinking.
Also have to consider cylinder cooling and the order in which they receive coolant from the pump. Again, due to different cylinder temps, plug color will not be the same (ever wonder why some small block chevy guys run a coolant line to the #7 cylinder when they are searching for the most effective efficiency on a per cylinder basis or why some big block guys stagger carb jetting).
Thermostat temp will effect plug color as well as the tune to go with the stat. Lower coolant temps will leave more color.
Other things will effect plug color as well. For now I would not be too concerned with your plug coloring. See what your data comes back at when you get it all hooked up and go from thee.
