Ebay BOVs... workable ones are fact/fiction?

OK... So I'm at that point where I've got a few mods into the Ty already (still missing the decent paintjob mod...). So since I frequent eBay a bit, I looked there for a BOV... and there's a metric shit-ton (or 20). Since I know 90% of everything on eBay is conterfeit from China, you can find good copies of almost anything.

So... separating fact from fiction: "What am I getting for 1/10th to 1/4 the price?"

I'm assuming a cheaper metal is used, that the finish on the "machined" surfaces isn't all that hot, and the diaphrams are junk (some would accuse Greddy of the same thing as it shipped form the factory).

Now, I'd love to toss $300 at a BOV, but damn... $300 is almost a new stainless catback, or a used 3" downpipe. Hell, there's a lot of places $300 could go... but if you could spend $30...???

Here's a example of a diaphram from eBay, one from GReddy, and one from a company called NGR (they take eBay ones and make them moar better!).

If you got a $30 one with this diaphram in place (I've heard DSM guys saying this is more commonly the case), and if you spent some time filing the casting flaws... would it be worthwhile? I know I'd love to save money where I could, while still achieving the same level of performance.

Food for thought....

For what its worth I grabbed a hks ssq off ebay for cheap and it looks legit compared to the fakes posted on their website. Haven't had any issues yet.

I have a friend getting the china hks ssq knock offs to put on Honda turbo jet skis and so far no problems. don't think you can tell the difference. I'd say go for it from what I've seen.

I bought from a 99.6% positive feedback seller. Compared it to all the fake pictures I could find including packaging. I had issues getting the snap ring seated in the flange that I bought so I ended up taking it to a tuner shop and have them seat it for me. I asked them if it was a knockoff since they sold HKS stuff and they told me it looked legit. Has to be fake (or stolen) for what I paid:dunno:

For one, we don't "need" a bov. Is it a good idea? Sure. Can you skimp on a bov? probably. However, i can buy a Tial-Q 50 mm bov from Steve Morris for $235.00 so whats the big deal?

Well $235 is pretty close to $300 that could go for a catback. Just referring to OP though. I myself was curious to these myself, where doe it even go, and what would it do basically make more more noise lol?

You will loose in quality. Spend the money and buy from the manufacture. The external of a China BOV may look ok but China uses cheaper internal springs that don't last. The WOOSH and the Whistle are cool but the BOV needs to work correctly.

Myself, I added one to prolong the life of my new turbo and taunt other drivers.

How about the Greddy types? Seems like it's, mechanically, a pretty simple design.

Mrsyclone had a bov break a few years ago and it ended up with parts in his engine and an expensive rebuild.

The Buick crowd thinks that a BOV is a joke ... they think its for ricers that only want the sound. Personally I think it helps with the quick stopping of your turbo when you let off the throttle and the blades close , BUT I dont think its a necessity either.

If there is a chance of it messing up your engine I am not sure I would chance it , especially a cheap knockoff one ---

That was always what I had heard, it made it easier on the turbo when you let off and all that air had to go someplace. Not to mention it supposedly allows you to keep at a higher rpms on the turbo between gears(?) :dunno: (I'm explaining it rather poorly... )

But thats only on a manual trans. We dont have to take our foot off the throttle to shift mind you. And hell, lots of new cars can do a no lift-shift anyway.
