yummmmm I want one! Just haven't heard a lot for strength. Read that they start slipping around 500 tq so can't do too many mods and expect a lot out of it. I still want one!

You have a link for the tci controller? I was just on their site and only saw newest item available was for the 4L80e

excuse my lack of tranny knowledge, but putting weight aside, what advantages does a 6-speed have vs. a 4l80e swap? are you gaining more on the top end?

Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

Been in the 6l80e (ford/gm) transmission and was not impressed alot of stamped steel parts and the double planetery set up that will hold factory power but I dont think will hold much more for long periods of time. 5th gear .852 6th gear .667

THey may be good after they catch on and people make parts for them but I think they will be atleast half again more than a 4l80e 4th gear .75

As for size I never paid much attention but they seemed bigger to me and I think the main problem for uss will be tunnel clearence

I'm starting the process ( this weekend ) of doing a frame off restore on my ty. (well having someone do a frame off restore, not me personally) but still a ways off before I get to the tranny, what benefits of a streetable 500-600hp ty would I gain by doing a 4l80e converted to a 6 speed?

Anytime you jam more parts in a tranny, it will be weaker. I'll stick with the tried and true 4L80. Hartman just did a manual shift 4L80 for my rockcrawler (no computer) and will be starting on another one for the Typhoon shortly. :) Another good thing is the core's can be had pretty cheap. I have 3 in my garage and they were all purchased for 100 or less.

Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

FYI,
From a diesel forum about a year ago concerning a 6 spd 4l80e.

I was talking to a tech guy at power train control solutions, his name is Russel by the way, we were discussing controllers for the 5R110 trans and the 6L80E when he started telling me about a conversion for the 4L80E trans. The conversion somehow involves a valvebody and one of thier controllers to turn the 4 spd auto 4L80E into a 5 spd or 6 spd whichever you want I guess dependin on programming. He didnt have a whole lot of info on it other than that they have been working with TCI on the programming aspects of it and seem to have it pretty well sorted out and may be available in the next few months. I tried calling TCI and the arrogant salesman I got refused to even acknowledge that such a thing is even possible and that TCI is not even interested in such a thing. I took it like he was an idiot and didnt have a clue or any ambition at even trying to find any info out for me.

taken from PCS' site. JET did make a full auto version for years.

My question is, will your TCU for the 4L80E control this Conversion Kit or would that require development?

Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

I did a lot of research towards installing one of the 4WD 6L80E transmissions in my 2000 Blazer with the blown 6 liter, 4WD.

It simply would not fit. I would have had to remove the transmission tunnel and completely build a new one. It would have hung far too
low and been the lowest point under my truck.

This picture illustrates the dimensional difference between the 2WD 6L80e and 4L56E Transmissions.

It sits much lower than the 700/4L65 series transmissions. Ground clearance will be an issue.

Threads on the 6L80e transmissions run their course on most GM swaps forums. However, the best candidates are those with large transmission tunnels and plenty of ground clearance.

There is a shorter pan, it's for the CTSv.

Can it be installed in a Typhoon/Syclone....Probably,,,with enough money. For the average drive/swapper/installer.....probably not cost effective.
