Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

Can it be installed in a Typhoon/Syclone....Probably,,,with enough money. For the average drive/swapper/installer.....probably not cost effective.

I just dont think it is worth it for the money I still think the 4L80e is going to be stronger in the long run any way

Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

I was talking with the guys from TCI this weekend at a track event and they were telling me that it won't effect the power handling capabilities at all. All the normal billet stuff that we would use is still applicable. They just rate it at 850 because they don't install that stuff.

The gear ratios are
1st - 3.08
2nd - 2.34
3rd - 1.60
4th - 1.30
5th - 1.00
6th - 0.75

Me personally....I like those ratios......and am probably going to give it a try. It's suppose to be available in a couple of weeks.

It would be intersting to see the power flow chart and to see if they change anything as far as planitarys to get first so low geared

If they beef up the 4th clutch I would think beef up alot since it is only used in overdrive (stock) I have never been to impressed with tci transmission had 4l60e that I tore apart and there were alot of stock components that I would have replaced :2cents:

I do think they stand behind there warranty well though

It's my under my impression (if I understood him correctly) that there is a pinion change and valve body change. Other than that and the magic of the TCU....not much else. So I wouldn't be surprised at all. I'm also under the impression that a factory 4L80e can pretty much go 850. But I figure it's worth a try. I would also think as you said....that they would have to do something to the 4th gear in order for it to hold up to all that. I left some other questions with the tech guy....I hope to be able to get more information on it when he gets back with me.

Personally, I'd like them to release the dual stator 4l80e converter one of the TCI guys mentioned long time ago. I know the th400's convertere weren't great, but electronics have come a long way since then.

Is that the one you can push a button to stall it up higher? Buddy of mine has one in an old Buick Stage 1. Something like that would really be nice.

Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

I'm trying hard not to be confused....

GM builds the 4L80E (4 speed auto), and 2 different 6 speed autos (6L80E and 6L90E).

The gear ratios quoted above on the TCI product don't come anywhere close to the GM6L80E ratios (which has a 4.02 1st gear). What's the TCI product based on? Is it the tried and true 4L80E with an aftermarket ratio set, using the .75:1 overdrive to achieve 2nd and 4th? Or is it a variant of the GM 6L80E with different gear ratios (and doesn't have a double overdrive)

The TCI setup is a 4L80e that's modified to get the extra two gears. But this threads original post was about the GM 6 speed. The TCI 4L80e just kind of got dragged into it.

This thread shifted from the new 6 speed to the old 4l80e being converted to a 6 speed.

Too many gears and it gets all confusing.

At some point your car will spend more time shifting than actually accelerating. IMO.

Now for a road course or fun, go for it. O wait nothing on these trucks makes logical sense. Heck put a 12 speed from a semi in it.

Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

I have a 6speed for the syclone, it will fit no more modt to the body than with a 80e, I used a dolley and hammer to make the room, nothing major, Just need a controller oh and a rebuild kit for the trans

Re: good news on 6l80e swaps

Ok what i see as a problem is low gearing.

if you have too much gear the motor don't load up hard enough to make boost very well. hence a shitty 3.06 first along with a 3.42 in a 700r4/4l60e. since a turbo is load dependent

What i would like to see done is mod the rear tail shift housing on a 2004r and weld on the t-case flange and you will have one hell of a strong trans with a usable gear set.

The GN's have 3.42's and they seem to work very well.

The 700r4 kinda acts like a mustang with 4.10's first gear is useless.

the shift to second kills us due to the large split on the gear ratio.

use for what? i hammered the floor for clearance the made it look pretty rhino liner will make it all good after I weld all the holes for the shifter cables closed 3 buttons on dash
