Help! Still an annoying clanging rusty wheel sound...

OK, so I know the usuall sounds, but here is one taht is driving me crazy.
Since my Ty has been on teh road, I have driven her about 200 miles in teh last week.
Only when it is in motion (can be coasting or on it), I hear what best sounds like a tin can with a bunch of bolts in it (or a chain?!) Not when I rev the engine. Now the truck runs normal no vibrations or weirdness... I am stumped because it doesnt sound like a bearing (I lifted it to see if a wheel does anything, and it doesnt)

Re: Weird sound when driving...

its it a ticking sound?is it coming from one of the front wheels?
if so its the cotter pin ends hitting the center caps.

if not- i need more details........

Re: Weird sound when driving...

i had stock wheels- i didn't think so either but my left side pin was just a bit longer and even folded back it made noise until i removed the center cap.

only noticeable at under35mph
i originally thought the cv joints or transfer case was binding but mine was moving straight without turning or backing up

Re: Weird sound when driving...

If the center cap is missing the o-ring, it will make a clicking noise too.

I am thinking of changing out my entire calipers because I think it might be the brakes

Re: Weird sound when driving...

If the cotter pin is rotating relative to the wheel, you have bigger issues to worry about.

doesn't have to rotate-
one end has to be longer than optimal when bent back- and it will hit worn out o ringed center caps for certain

Re: Weird sound when driving...

OK I figured it out.
On the pass side cotter pin, there is a nut of some sort (almost looks like a spacer) between the cotter pin and the bolt. I need to make that tighter. It is moving around causing that sound. Has taht happened to anyone else?

Is this what your talking about? The 2nd item left to right. It's not a spacer, it's a castle nut lock washer, you can't make it tighter because it's not threaded, only way to move it closer to the cotter pin is add more flat washers behind the axle nut itself, which is unnecessary. Mine sits a little loose but doesn't sound like a tin can of bolts, yours shouldn't either. I know you said you checked to see if there was play in the bearing, sometimes the bearings or races become pitted and make a grinding or popping sound but won't always have play in them.

That would be the item.
How do I check the bearings if they need grease

Re: Weird sound when driving...

Bad u-joints in your driveshaft can cause clicking sound.. not "nuts/bolts in a can sound". Just a thought since your noise is occuring during rotation.

Yeah, not that sound (I know that one!). I believe it is that below. I will try to see if it fixes my problem!

You would have to remove the axle or the whole spindle/knuckle/hub assembly and pop off the seal in the back where the axle shaft enters the hub. The bearing is a 1 piece assembly unlike a 2wd front spindle.

Then it's time to MacGyver that shit!

Fab up some type of restraint system under or next to the truck to hold someone while another drives, and they listen for the noise.

We need pics. And vids. Lots of them.

Re: Weird sound when driving...

all i could hear was the grinding sound. It was tough to hear the noise you described.

i would fix the constant grinding, and the vibrations coming through the cab. then move onto the noise.

So, I was under the truck last night, lifted the front end so I can look around. I realized that I hat teh remote oil filter (WIll have to fix that during the winter)
Also moved the wheels by hand. Hear no grind or noise. Looked at the propshaft to see if anything was hitting it. The transmission shift is close, (really close) but doesnt hit, however, the shaft has a little bit of play to it (really slight).I am guessing that is where the vibrations are coming from, however, I am getting new tires (and alligned) on it Monday, and I think that it will help as I know the wheels are out of balance right now. It is an upgraded prop shaft too.
I will be checking the rear as Brandon thinks I should take the rear drums off and check them (We both think the grinding is coming from the rear(
Now, to the rear, today. If it is nice out today, I am going to take it out, and take a video of the noise.
