Whats the easiest way to test the intercooler pump just got my truck few weeks ago just wanted to check and make sure the pump is good. Im not having any issues but i figured someone on here would know any easy way to test and see if its working coming on . Also Read others have the pump turning on with the Ignition instead if waiting for the temp to raise up Thoughts.. Thanks.

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

if you got a 12v power probe you can probe the pos/neg.

I have a small battery tender i have modified with little male ends or female what ever i need.

When i need to test something to put power to i just use that. Battery tender.

Special little leads i made. anyone can do it.

Or, if you have a DMM there are various ways to check OHM, Resistance, Cotinuity..

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

These intercoolers are known for being in bad shape if not paid attenchin to. When I got my truck It seemed to run fine, I didnt notice anything wrong until I started tuning it and looking at the data. Then I noticed that my IAT's were high, around 160 after the 2nd or 3rd 1/4 mile wide open. After some investigating I noticed that:

1: fuse was blown (behind alternator)
2: The relay was none functional (checked it with a power supply and ohm meter)
3: wires going to relay had broken off in the housing
4: Pump was siezed
5; IC hose was full on kinked right off the IC
6: hose clamps were loose...everywhere...and leaked.
7: the metal hose coming off the motor behind the alternator braket was pretty crushed.

I realize this doesnt help you, I more wanted to complain. i will agree a jumper on the ALDL is easyest, and then just check the intercooler for 'churning' ...you'll know if its on...

Hotwire it and turn the ignition on, but do not start the truck. I can hear my Johnson pump whining away. Then take the cap off and see if the fluid is moving.

So if i hear the pump humming everything should be good right lol. Cause i deffintly heard it altho didnt see any fluid moving hmmm.. how much should it be moving maybe i just didnt notice but it was deffintly making some noise.

I wouldn't just go with humming as proof of working, I would check for water flow also.

Agreed, hose kinks & air pockets will stop/impede liquid flow. It some some patience to get it right.

As for hot wiring the IC, if you have an aftermarket chip, doing code $59 or planning on either of those, you can use the ECM to turn the pump rather than cut your wiring.

Ok so like I said I hear pump how much water should I see moving if I remove cap

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

Mine tends to be a crazy torrent that will spill out from the flow on occcasion if I have the cap off. Its a bit foamy, but its a super noticible churning. if you do nat have a churning, you may have a kinked hose, they like to kink right above the pump on the IC

Can it be unkinked or does it just have to be replaced havent gone and looked yet if it needs to be replaced what size hose Is it

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

ok im gonna take a look if the hose seems to not have a kink whats the best way to check and rid an air pocket if that ay be the case thanks?

As much as everyone hates clear hoses, a small section somewhere with some food coloring will show flow . I did that when I had the w/a and it made checking real easy .

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

I dont know about unkinking, My hose had been kinked for...years...so it was pretty much ruined. I had to pull the lower intercooler to deal with it. I ended up getting rid of the metal line, getting rid of the stock pump and running an RV pump made by sureflo and running 3/4 heater hose from the intercooler, into the pass fender, under the battary, and to the intercooler and pump, I did it kinda differently, and mounted the pump to a metal braket I build in front of the driver side frame rail. I think the pump was like, 50 from a member on here, and the hose was 13 dollars from the zone, plus some hose clamps. Took some time, but it seems to work well. But look around your system, check behind the lower intercooler, where the pump is, you may have to do some diggin, but you can prolly take that upper fan shroud off, and the fan and feel around down there. as for air being trapt in the lines theres a bunch of ways people say to do it, Somehow mine never had that happen, but it seemed like people would fill the system as much as they could and modify like a 20 oz coke bottle to fit snuggly into the fill hole of the upper intercooler when pressed in, then fill that bottle with coolant and sqeeze and massage the bottle and that somehow worked. I would look into that more though...

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

How do you bleed the pump? I can hear it but nothing coming out
Pm would help as i never know when some one replys with out finding this thread

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

It may seem homoish but put your mouth over the intercooler, where the cap goes and blow into it to help get air bubbles out. Another member told me about this and its worked for me!

the easy way:

1)get a hose mender kit with screw on threads or quick disconnect from harbor freight to attach water hose to the truck plumbing

2)determine the flow path and attach water hose to your 3/4 inter cooler hose(INTAKE hose off inter cooler)
open lower charge cooler petcock.

4)turn on water & key on so pump will run & i guarantee any air pockets will be blown out after 10 seconds

5)shut off truck & water supply & close petcock-

6)fill inter cooler_ use large funnel to hold extra
once full and key on again - it will drain the funnel- dont let it get empty!!!\\

done!

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

In a stock setup, the CAC's cap is pretty close to the highest point in the system. Lifting the front of the truck (jacks, ramps, etc.) will help even more. Otherwise, you can unbolt the CAC from the three brackets underneath and lift it up, if the metal hard lines have been replaced with standard heater hose to allow for flexibility.

Just keep running the pump for a bit and adding fluid until it's full. The air will naturally work its way up and out.

Re: How To Test intercooler Pump?

should have mentioned my inter cooler is an atr big liquid and metal hoses have been replaced with 3/4 heater and sit above the intake which make them slightly higher overall.

also i had the inter cooler off to paint and i had a ton of air that i didn't know about trapped in the second atr heat exchanger- and it would not work its way out!

unbolting my inter cooler is a pain in the ass- way easier to disconnect the hose.
if anyone needs pics lmk
