Ideas on how to get bodyshop to match paint correctly.......

Had 3 pieces of cladding replaced by a local bodyshop with a good reputation. Got the truck back and the paint doesn't even come close to matching, way too white. The guy at the shop said that is to be expected due to it being a 10 year old paint job.

Found this on syty.org archives, and it applies to my 93 frost white/frost white Ty.

> Across the bottom of this label reads...
> "WAEM WA-L5111 U5111 182"

These are the paint codes. WAEM=waterbase enamel. WA= the 'universal color
code.' The paint and auto industry uses this number to track the color
formula. Any body shop or paint supply house can use this number to mix the
paint. The L and U are for lower and upper. AS IN BEFORE THEY GO TO PAS.
Your car was the same color before the cladding was put on. THE 'L' DOES NOT
REFER TO CLADDING COLOR.

The caps locks refer to some posts saying that the L in L5111 stood for Linen white, which obviously it's not.

I had always heard that our vehicles came with a single stage paint job rather than a base coat/clear coat paint job, although the debate never seemed to ever come to a clear conclusion in the archives. I also read that it might be illegal to paint laquer/acrylic paints in some states now.

Any ideas on how to match the paint up, previous experiences etc. would be great.

I also asked for them to give me my old cladding pieces back, and he said "i'm not sure we still have them, but i'll check". Is there any laws on inspecting and keeping old parts when repaired?

Thanks.

take a piece of cladding that is the color you want to a autobody supply house. they will be able to scan the piece, match the color, and mix it for you there.

of course you need to know what kinda paint you want. Base/Clear is definately the way to go if you ask me, but if the rest of your truck is single stage then its obviously gonna look "different" from the rest of the truck.

If your body matches your cladding, the best thing to do is just remove your gas tank door and have that scanned.

race or get outta the way
well another approach might to consider this a great opportunty to completely change the color of the cladding!

I dont know about the gas cap door thing because they are different materials. We did that for one of the Skylines down at RB Motoring and the hood came back WAY off cause it was fiberglass and the gas tank door wasnt.

Its the 1991 Prototype Typhoon "Shamu" , I like how it looks but I just want to know what my fellow peers have to say about it.

I cant see it being a problem on something that already has paint on it. My body matches my cladding, same paint. As a matter of fact, I have never seen a SyTy with the same paint on the cladding and the body that hasnt matched.

either way, im sure his truck was painted with all the same color. I highly doubt they used another color to paint the cladding, so if he does indeed use the gas tank door, and the color does change, its only gonna match what the other cladding already is, cause that probably changed too.

Ok well I have a piece of the cladding, and they should be able to match that. I told the guy I'm going to go in Monday to talk with him about this, and also to see where the hell my old cladding is.

I did ask someone who is a mechanic, and he said here in Michigan if the customer requests to see/take the old parts, he is within his right by law. Regardless if he asked when he dropped off the vehicle, or when he picked it up. One of the pieces I had replaced was the front bumber, nothing was cracked or anything, jus some scratches I didn't like, and it's perfectly good.

Yes it would be great to repaint the whole truck, but I'm buying a new house in 40 days, and leave for Poland in 15, so timing and $$ conflict. What is a good price for a good job on a Ty, good masking, windows out, cladding off etc. etc., I want to stay with the white/white.

With a shop telling you he is not sure he still has your old cladding it leads me to believe that your old cladding was repaired and not replaced. If you paid for new cladding ask to see the reciept where the cladding was purchased. Sometimes it is easier for a shop to repair parts that they are supposed to replace. Bottom line is more profit for the shop. It is always a good idea to always ask for your old parts back when they are REPLACED.
As for matching.... I have been an auto paint store manager for 16 years and i will be the first to tell you there is no such thing as a perfect match......period. When body panels are repaired the adjescent panels are blended with color and cleared.. as for cladding they are semi gloss and can be blended without clear but myu suggestion would be to negoitate with the shop to have all the cladding redone. If you are wanting to paint your moldings high gloss to match your truck take your gaslid off and polish it 3 or 4 times and find an auto paint store that sells DuPont that has a chromavision and have it computer matched.... make sure the lid has a FLAWLESS finish after all the computer can only read as good as the panel it is readings finish is. Purchase Chromabase or Chromapremier BC/CC paint and basemaker and supply your shop with your own paint. Ask them to make a test panel before paint is applied and all should be well.

It is law in michigan, the customer has the right to receive the replaced parts. My dad has a muffler shop and theres a huge sign for all the customers to see. Not that many people ask for the parts back, but in this case I would have also.

most good shops will give you the parts, we do we have a carlot and shop and we always keep our parts, but about your paint i am a dealer and have seen many many gm white frost paint jobs and they all go to shit due to the easy fading and no clear coat, i have a whitonwhit ty and im repainting the whole thing because there is no way you can match the paint, and there is no clear coat so why would you keep that paint

oh and i bet yor old cladding was sold, bodyshops know the value of those peices they only playd dumb, i deal with them all day long.
