Wow, that would be a HUGE mold . The price of the stock to cut *one* mold plus the design/machine time would be the down payment on a house easy. The table on the CNC I operate has a machining window of 64" X 32".

I have never had to cut something close to that size in that mill. On the other one that's a different story. When the boss starts taking measurements around the mill, things usually get "interesting"

I hope that something materializes out of this. Just for some friendly FYI, How much more does the "wide" fenders protrude over the stock ones? And is the draft angle close to the same?

I think that he is looking to get fiberglass molds built so that he can make fiberglass reproductions. If he just gets an open face molds made they will be large but its just a couple hundred dollars in material + a ton of time.. It will need to be a flanged multiple piece mold so that the new parts are able to be released when they are laid up in the mold.

Any pics and/or measurements of the fenders that show how much they differ from stock?

When I saw the link above, I thought that he was looking to go with urethane. A fiberglass mold would be hella cheaper for sure. We are now making custom urethane parts using silicone molds that we designed and cut where I work. There are MANY steps involved to make a finished product and the customer pays for it I can assure you

...

I guess the other option to lower the fabrication costs would be to allow the manufacturer of said molds make some parts that they could sell themselves to offset the tooling costs. Of course the downside is if the market got flooded with the pieces, "wide" cladding could become as common as wings

After re-reading and actually looking at the link it seems you may be right..

These fenders look oem i dont see any problem with them flooding the market that would kickass if all sy's looked like that.

I agree. Even if these are reproduced at a "good" price I don't think many common 1st gen s10 owners would spend that kind of money on a "fancy body kit".:2cents:

But I would:D

why not. there's tons of s series owners that wish they could own a syty or love the look of the syty but know how rare and expensive the cladding is... if it was cheap and mass produced there would be cladding on every piece of shit rusted out s series.. I like my sy because no one else around has one.. and if they do I know them :)

The main reason I want to make molds is for back up fenders in case I destroy the originals, I won't be SOL. Selling fenders from the molds will help me recover the expense of producing the molds.

The originals are just open face fiberglass? right? Is that how you intend to have the molds made as well?

So whats the expected selling price on each?

Re: Just purchased Shaun Palmer's Pike's Peak Wheels and Wide Body Fenders

Front fender mounting is nearly complete. It took a ton of massaging to get them to fit half way decent. I now realize that the side skirts below the doors must have been made of fiberglass as well because the fiberglass fender "cladding" doesn't align properly as they do on Shaun's truck. For a race truck the fitment is acceptable, but for a street truck some of you might be disappointed.

When I get the fenders completely fitted Brian I'll have Brian come over and see if he feels they are worthy of making molds from.

Rears will require major fabrication to get them to adapt. So don't even bother with these unless you are ditching the stock bed.

couldn't you just make molds of just a portion of the rears and fronts actually and then trim off the extra and make them similar to the oem ones in mounting?

but obviously with better mounting tabs so not as likely to break, like oem ones

i would assume that he had removeable side bed skins and that is what you bought?

Like I said it would take a ton of tweaking to get them to fit. I don't see the benefit unless you are going to delete the bed altogether for reasons of turning the truck into a racer. I would look into making wider fiberglass bed cladding.

I hope this goes well I might be in for a set of fenders and would love a bedside if you do those.

Truckless. For now.

We were discussing cladding options this morning... Any updates?

Is this thread as close as these fenders / flares ever came to production?

Sorry. I was planning on doing that as soon as I got all the mechanicals sorted out on my truck which I thought I did, until my 4l80e took a crap. So now I'm going so be spending tons of time, money and energy converting to the manual trans setup which will only push back the bodywork, fender molds and paint project.
