LED Replacement Lights Guide

So i'm converting all my bulbs to LED... I'm ordering my lights from autolumination.com

Just thought I'd give you the scoop on the good and the bad, so you learn from my mistakes.

I switched out the reverse lights and the 194 parking lights in the rear using:

(Reverse Lights)
SMT Tower 48 High Powered Wide Angle SMT LEDS 1156 White
They Look Awesome... they light up the lens just as bright as a standard 1156, but with waaaaay less current draw (which is what i'm after, i want all the excess power for my stereo :p )

(Tail Light 194's/front corner turn signal 194's)
5 Led SMT Tower 194 bulbs (red for tails, amber for front corners)
A HUGE difference! They light up uch brighter and are more visiblee in the daytime. Much safer, much less current draw, and since LEDs instantly turn on and off (no fade) they allow for better reaction time so no one rear ends you...

(bumper lights and brake lights)
SMT Tower 48 High Powered Wide Angle SMT LEDS 1157 Red for tails, amber for bumper signals...
These light up the lenses just as bright or a bit brighter than regular bulbs, all the same pros as above... they look amazing with clear lenses in the front

NOTE: I tried getting the smt spiders for the tail lights... they DO NOT WORK, the socket that our bulbs go into, the big fat thing, doesnt allow for the bulbs to go in deep enough to make a connection... these are expensive bulbs, so dont waste your money, they fit, but they dont connect to power... one way to get around this i guess if you wanted them that badly is to make the two bumps on the bottom of the bulb biggger using solder... but im not looking to rig anything up...

Autolumination sent me everything quickly with a tracking number...thats a plus... it was well wrapped, a bit old school with newspaper and stuff...but it was still well wrapped. Nothing arrived broken. I took a oss on tthe spider lights because they didnt fit. Im not gunna go through the hasssle of shipping returns and the like, so I just threw them into the basement for another car or something....

I reccomend for the tail lights, the SMT tower 1157's mentioned above...

Total cost for the makeover...after shipping and stuff comes to around $200

I know thats expensive for light bulbs... but they make a huge visual impact, they add safety due to instant on times and better visability, they draw way less current, and of course, the best part, they never, ever go out.

So if you were thinking about doing the swap... thats all the info you need. The problem with most led bulbs is brightness, these are definately bright enough, and they definately show a big difference betweeen the high/low setting (parking light vs brake light) so you know when the turn signals are on.

All you need to buy is a heavy duty electronic flasher to replace your old one with so you wont need any resistors. Get one at autozone or advance auto parts... Just thought I'd share all this info with you guys... ill get some pics up of the led install once I have all the bulbs in :)

Re: LED Replacement Lights Guide

I tried LED replacement bulbs in my El Camino and they just weren't as bright. They shine more like flashlight so you just see a bright 1inch circle. They dont shine 180 plus degrees like a standard filiment bulb does. So they dont reflect off the mirrored part of the lense. They are brighter but don't emit as much light. Needless to say it was a waste of $ IMO.

The back of our lights have a silver/gray spray paint inside(sort of dull finish), not much reflectivity. Only way to get bright output is dremmel back of the lens & put in the largest LED board that will fit. & correct, only a certain angle of light output, not full 180. One of these days I'll pop mine apart for photos & post them. I did both front & rear, no backup, or front side markers.

Foglights are just bulbs...stock housing... the Headlights are a 2 step proess. The new lens converts the sealed beam headlamps to H4 bulbs. The h4 bulbs were then removed and replaced with h4 sized HID 6000k's total cost came to around 150-200 dollars... gotta aim em real low thogh to not blind oncoming traffic

I agree with the board theory, only way to get the full advantage of LEDs. Looks goo otherwise though...

guagepower- question for ya. I just received my bulbs from autolumination per your recommendation (nice job by the way).

For the 48 HP 5 SMT LED 1157 amber bulbs on the front, I'm having an issue getting them to lock in the socket. It almost seems like the bulb is deeper then the socket. Did you run across this issue? If so, how did you overcome?

In looking at it closer, the length of the metal shell of the autolumination bulbs is longer then the stocker 2057. Not sure of the best way to resolve...

I only think they look better because the orange bulbs dont show when the lights are off and you use clear lenses , hehehe. Nice way to be legal for sure ---

Word of warning, any bulb converted to an LED bulb that is on when the vehicle is started will eventually burn out. LED's do not like voltage dips and spikes, and the voltage dip when cranking the vehicle is enough to kill them over time. This really applies more for interior lights. I converted most of my interior lights on my Sy (purchased from autolumination.com) and most of them were dead whithin two months time. Same thing happened on my 01 S10 Xtreme.

The LED's I used on my conversion were for automotive, i.e. trailer lights.I haven't driven the truck a whole lot since the conversion a year ago, but have had trailers w/ LEDs for years.
