Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

Man oh man! It still hasn't set in yet that this happened. This morning I was going to get some oil at Auto Zone and as I was going through an intersection a few cars ahead hit the brakes for a guy turning in to a gas station. Unfortunately, I didn't see it until it was too late and I rear ended a Toyota pick up. I hit the brakes hard and probably hit them at about 15-20mph.

Nothing happened to their truck except they may need a new bumper. Mine on the other hand was not good at all. Quite a bit of damage even though I drove it on to the trailer and in to the garage. I am worried they are going to total the truck out. Hopefully they don't. Shitty part is that I still owe $2000 on it. I think that may come in to play but I have never been in this situation so I guess I shouldn't say. Here is the damage

A good friend of mine had similar damage to his Ty about a year ago and they gave him 6200 for the damages. I am hoping I can just get it fixed and keep it. Hopefully they value the truck at 10+.

Re: Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

damn! Do you still have reciepts for all the work youve done? That could really help you out. If they do total it out you may be able to buy it back for a small amount.

:rotf: Thats not really that funny but have to laugh I guess.

I know how fixable it is but unfortunately it wont be up to me.

Its up to you....you don't have to turn in a claim on your TY. It is entirely your choice if you do.

Re: Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

A few things to keep in mind. If they deem it to be a Total Loss, they cannot take the vehicle from you. It is your property (and the banks) and they have no legal right to force the vehicle from your ownership. They can pay you ACV less salvage and you keep the truck.

Start searching for part prices and provide the prices to the appraiser. It will help him/her complete the estimate. Specialty vehicles sometimes scare an appraiser, especially one like yours. They look under the hood and say what is all this stuff, I don't want to get involved because it looks like a repair PITA and it will cost $$$ so they say screw this, make it a T/L then they never have to worry about the claim again and they move on. There is only so much time in a day for them to complete their assignments. Extra time on one claim screws up their whole day.

If they do consider it a T/L, ask to see the appraisal and make sure it is not fluffed up just to justify the t/l by the numbers. Also ask how did they come up with a value and ask to see the specifics on how they arrived at the number. Make sure it all looks good and accurate then you can do the math to see if it is a t/l by your way of thinking. Usually if the damages approach or exceed 80% of the determined value, they will deem it a t/l. The 80% is a guideline. Ask them how they determine their threshold.

Do you have specialty insurance or is it on your regular auto policy?

Had similar accident. Let my insurance cover other vehicle and fixed mine with my own. Wasn't really that expensive parts wise. Painting was done at a local collision shop. Your work looks good. Sorry to see it like that but you will rebuild it !

I agree, i think you're better off taking it into your own hands.:2cents:
Good luck with the repairs.

Re: Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

If I can get them to pay for it I certainly will. It would take me a few months at least to get it back on the road with my money. Truth be told, if it came to that, it would probably sit for a long time because this will be my busy season and I need to make sure IRS gets paid off in time. Ty would become basically at the bottom of my priorities. For me that would be sheer torture. Especially since I haven't really driven it much in the last two years anyway.

I do have all of my receipts still but doubt that wold get me far. I will just have to see what the adjuster says.

Re: Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

This is true, then on your tile is going to show A salvage. OUCH for resale

Not sure if its different from state to state but, I had a similar situation with a '70 Chevelle. They did total it but I bought it back for very little. The title did not change. Had I not bought it back though it would have ended up with a rebuilt title. I was the only one that could keep it with the original title. :2cents:

What the hell state are you in? I've never even heard about that... Once an insurance company totals ur vehicle they give you what they think it's worth...then u can buy it back for pennies on the dollar. But I thought it was a federal law and not a state law that the title needed to be branded...

Re: Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

My truck had all your damage, PLUS I had broken fender cladding, bumper support, and bumper cladding. My total bill was around $3500 having a shop put the parts on for me and buying used parts.

Sorry to hear this news though, did you get a ticket for the accident being your fault?! ---

Re: Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

I was amazed I didn't get my front bumper at all. I hit a Toyota pick up so all of the damage was above it. Only the passenger side fender cladding broke and it is fixable. I added up everything last night and I will spend about $2500 for everything not including paint. That is me doing it myself. I am thinking they will damage it at $6500. Hope my Ty is worth more than that.

Re: Might lose my Ty, wrecked!

truck isnt a total loss, there is maybe 3500 in damage , frame is good, and cladding was saved thats the $$$$$ part they will write it for

core support 125.00
grille 49.00
2 fenders 65.00 each
hood 300.00 if they will cover the cowl

all aftermarket

add paint and its black so they can panel paint it probably come in right about 3k total
