Mobil 1 or Royal Purple

Just wondering what the best of the two would be, I am definately going to use one of the two. Royal Purple or Mobil 1 but would like to get your opinions (pros/cons) on each one. Thanks!

All I use is Mobil 1 synthetic but Royal Purple and Amsoil are about as good.

Re: Mobil 1 or Royal Purple

:rant:Well my mind has changed. Initially I was sold on Mobile 1. The first time I did anything to the motor I was amazed at how clean it was. I thought wow, this is cool. Jump to the present, I've got the motor out because of a knock. Spun the two center mains. My point is even the "good" bearings, including the cam bearings, look trashed. To much boost? Maybe, I've hit 22 or 23 a time or two, and I've seen knock on DM. BUT, the pistons, rings and cyls looked totally normal. Yes I know, there is no way to prove it was the oil one way or the other. So anyway when the new motor goes together it's gonna get Shell Rotella. Non synth for break-in I know but I doubt this motor will see Mobile one again.

RP is probably better but the price is ridiculous. I've been using M1 in my Regal for the past 3 years and it seems to like it a lot.

Mobile 1 is not what it use to be. 0-40 is okay but the rest of M1 line is crap. Rotella as mentioned is also a good oil to use along with Amsoil. German Castrol Syn is another good oil. You want to find the oils that DO NOT have the ILSAC GF-4 rating.

some of the additives flow out the exhaust wherethey can degrade oxygen sensor and catalytic converter performance.Faced with ever more stringent emissions standards and the governmentalmandate for extended emissions-control- system warranties, the OEMs gottogether with the motor oil makers and decided to reduce the amount of ZDDP in street-legal, gasoline-engine motor oils. After all, theyweren't needed with modern roller lifters and overhead-cam followers. The reduction first started in the mid-'80s, and it has been a gradualprocess, but the latest API SM and GF-4 specs have reduced ZDDP contentto such an extent that the new oils may not provide adequate protectionfor older, flat-tappet-equipped vehicles running nonstock, performancecams and valvetrains. And it will only get worse; projected future oilspec revisions will likely reduce ZDDP content even more.

Haven't heard good oil reports from Royal Purple.

Royal purple is cheaper at all CSK's by about a dollar. I have seen some of the latest tests in one of trade magazines and valvoline synthetic performed the best out of off the shelf oils. Mobil was either last or next to last. royal purple and amsoil were the best.

0-40 is good because it is not an energy conserving oil. You will never find an energy conserving stamp on any european oil, they care more about engine protection than MPG.

Re: Mobil 1 or Royal Purple

The "Four Ball Wear" test is the indication of how well an oil protects the metal surface of its surroundings.

Its from an Amsoil site so take that for what its worth.

Mobil 1 in all 4 cars for us.
Considering switching due to recent changes in the way Mobil is formulating the full syn but I can't make up my mind what to try next.

Re: Mobil 1 or Royal Purple

I've been religious about M1 in the Omni, Ty, and the SS, but recently I've been considering going with Castrol Syntec.

German Castrol Syn is another good oil.

How do you tell if it's German?
