Re: My Ty engine took a poo
Stock compression on a Sy/Ty is 8.35:1 i think....or somewhere very near there. I'll bet a bucket of donuts if you call Jasper they'll tell you the compression on thier motor is near 9.5:1 or so. Then I'll bet another bucket, that if you ask them for a Sy/Ty specific motor they'll ask you what the hell you're talking about.
People don't use Jasper engines in these trucks for a myriad of reasons.....since you're too lazy or don't want to believe all the posts, or the people that have been around for over a decade with these trucks.....I'll list some below.
1. Wrong compression ratio. Without a custom tune (which I don't think you're capable of since you won't listen to any help thats already been offered to you) you'll have serious detonation issues on stock timing with the higher comression. See #2 for why this is bad.
2. Weak internal parts (wrong rods/pistons). With tons of detonation that you'll have from the wrong compression ratio, you'll easily break the crappy L35 pistons/rods.
3. As Jimmy so eloquently put it, they are put together by $8/hr crackheads. Do you want your high performance motor put togethor by someone who only wants things "within spec" and not "TO spec"? I know I sure wouldn't
4. You can't put a motor in yourself. no biggie, lots of people can't....If you get a Jasper engine who the hell is putting it in for you? You going to drive the truck to Jasper, IN to have it done? If not then you are getting the same situation from a KNOWN GOOD vendor. I promise you'll get better customer support from one of our vendors than you will from Jasper. If something goes wrong with the motor you'll still have to get it pulled, and sent back. No two ways about that. If you get a Jasper engine I PROMISE, they won't cover it under warranty when they open it up and find holes in the pistons, or rods bent in 1/2 (see #1, and #2 for why it'll end up this way).
5. Those of us that have been around for awhile know better.
You know, in the end it's you're cash. You can listen to the people who know what the hell we're talking about, or you can do what you want and get the Jasper engine......Just be sure to post pictuers of how that works out for you. And next time you ask for help, don't get bent out of shape when you don't get the answer you wanted to hear.
*edit*
Just re-read your post. Seems I missed a few points.
If you can't afford a "race" build from one of the vendors, find a local machine shop, and tell them EXACTLY what you want. You can find used pistons and rods on here all the time. Have the block rebuilt to stock specs. Might save you some cash in hard parts, but the labor/machine work is gonna be there regardless. I promise even a rebuilt stock block is leaps and bounds better than anything you'll get from Jasper.
As to the comment about them being frail. They aren't frail, they are finicky, and easy to abuse. It's a turbocharged AWD pickup truck thats 15 years old. You can beat on it, but you need to understand it's a 2 or 3:1 ratio between time spent beating, and time spent maintaining. I think that will hold true with just about anything in this price/performance range. Cheap/Fast/Reliable....pick two. $15k for a pristine truck that runs low 13's stock is cheap and fast......guess which it isn't.
