New Sy owner... and she caught fire =(

How'd. I am the yet again proud owner of a Sy. Truck ran and drove great with the occasional "glitch" and a brief flash of the check engine light. I knew the truck needed some attention and figured I would spend the time doing a full inspection and tune but was never given that chance...

Imagine driving at night in a dark and remote residential neighborhood, just cruising along at about 45mph when all of a sudden everything goes black. The motor shuts down, the lights go out, absolutely nothing! I promptly turn the key off, pop her in neutral and just rolled along not being able to see a bloody thing as the neighborhood has NO street lights (or any else for that matter). My sorry ass hangs out the window and navigates the Syclone to the side of the road completely dumbfounded by what has just happened. Once stopped and out of the truck I am barely able to see some faint smoke coming from under and around all sides of my Syclone's closed hood. I quickly pop the latch, flip her open and realize I've got a MAJOR problem as my truck is currently on fire and I have NOTHING to extinguish the flames. Now don't get me wrong, the motor is not completely engulfed, but rather a bright orange and red flicker reflecting off the passenger side firewall down low enough and generating enough smoke that I cant see the actual source. The flames were coming from where the bell housing would bolt to the engine block somewhere below my limited line of vision in the complete darkness/smoke. I quickly sprinted to the closest house I can see and rapidly knock on the door.... knock again..... then a third time..... finally a middle-aged women shows her face behind the door glass and I franticly explain that "I need a hose", "I need a fire extinguisher", "a bucket, anything... my truck is on fire!!" The woman looks at me with a lowered brow and says in a calm yet skeptical voice "I can't help you", then promptly turns and walks away!! WTF!!Long story short, I called my wife who is at my house (thank god is only three minutes from where I stand watching my Sy burn) and explained how see needs to drop everything, grab a fire extinguisher and hurry, hurry, hurry!! As I wait and watch my truck slowly burn, I desperately grab handfuls of dirt and sand doing my best to remove the grass and then proceed to sprinkle it down my firewall anxiously waiting my wife's arrival. The flame was quickly extinguished with the extinguisher and several hours later my heart returned to its normal pace. The truck was towed back to my house, hosed off and parked back in the safety of my garage.... I am heartbroken.

I have a 5.3 LS1 sitting on a stand in my garage currently and have made the decision to pluck the 4.3L and do the conversion. My truck will unfortunately not be stalking the streets of Ocala any time soon, but the bright side is I will have a complete motor, tranny, transfer case, intercooler, aftermarket heat exchanger, bla, bla, bla, available for those who may be interested. I feel quite confident that the wiring harness was the cause and obviously this is now toast, but all things considered, I WAS REALLY LUCKY!! The Sy will live to see another day, bigger, better and stronger than she ever was before.

Anyhow, glad to be on a member of Sy/Ty and look forward to meeting new friends along the way.

Passenger side, bell housing?? That's where the starter is. Wonder if that's the origin. :dunno:

Never...never...never pop the hood when you think the truck is on fire. The hood is your damper. Fight the fire from the wheel well or underneath.

Good tip on the hood opening thing... What is this purple wire your referring to LT1?
I honestly haven't really spent any time trying to locate the source or determine the extent of the damage as its all coming out anyways. I am bummed that it happened, but honestly I was on the fence about doing the LS swap before the truck caught fire so the fact that this has now happened has only made my decision that much easier. Thanks to all the welcomes and support. I am thrilled to be part of the SyTy group!

Re: New Sy owner... and she caught fire =(

The purple wire is the starter wire. It sometimes gets burned from being to close to the down pipe. Ever notice any clicking when trying to start it before? If you did that could be your problem.

No clicking or starting issues, just the occasional flash of the "Check Engine" light especially under boost. The truck would fall flat, the light would flash briefly, then she would continue as nothing had happened. I knew the Sy had an issue, I just didn't think the issue would cause the truck to burn =/
Anyhow, bring on the boosted LS!!

Agree 100% there. I have a scar on my wrist and a nice gif of me in my signature. I opened the hood and boom. Free haircut! Only it was like shaving my eyebrows, eyelashes, nosehair, and 2 inches back on my head!

Then I got to fight it from the fenderwells but I saved it. Now Mike is putting my "crispy" back together! Thanks again TYTILIDIE!!!!

Shitty deal on the fire glad you where not injured as far as a LS swap I am not a fan, sorry it may be cheaper but in the end these trucks got there fame from the V6 awd turbo, do a LS swap on a blazer or s-10, if you want cheap and reliable I am not going to lie the LS swap is the way to go but if you want to turbo that LS you will need a 4L80E and thar swap will cost 4-7k dependent on parts and build

But then again one of the best Syty tuners I know has a LS7 in his sy and his quote is "how much do you want to work on your truck" the reason it has a LS, I am a idiot I will keep the V6

Why take a syclone and put in a V8? Takes away the whole reason for a syclone. I'm with Matt on that one keep it planted with a V6.

V8 vs V6 is the same argument as Chevy vs Ford. Some people just don't get that the V8 swap is as lame as owning a Ford.

To me it's saying I give up and don't have the stomach for it anymore with the exception of the guys who have stretched their builds as far as they can go but want to go further but even then I still wouldn't do it. I have seen people spend just as much on an LS swap as I have seen doing a built V6 if not more. As for reliability, most race apps last only a season or two anyway.

Re: New Sy owner... and she caught fire =(

I hear what you guys are saying, and honestly if the truck were a little nicer I would probably just build the V6 and keep it original. She is kinda a beater and I REALLY want a boosted LS in a AWD platform. If these trucks can be a blast out of the box with the factory 280hp, I can only imagine what she can be like with twice that power (and that's on a VERY mild tune). I have a Grand National sitting in my garage that I would never think of doing a V8 swap... so why should the Sy be any differen you askt?? I guess in all fairness there really is no difference. I've talked to many who also feel that pulling the V6 is wrong, then there is an equal amount of people who support my building a boosted LS Syclone. The reality is that this is a personal choice and no matter what I do, there will always be someone who will say I should have done it differently. If I had the opportunity to buy a Sy with no motor, would the conversion be more palatable? I guess the next best thing to buying one with no engine is doing the conversion on one where the truck burned... Please don't hate on me, I'm still a fellow SyTy owner after all =)

Bro, it is YOUR truck and you can do what you please with it (to include running dual stacks through the bed if you'd like). If you stay V6. people will hate on you...if you go V8, people will hate on you...if you leave it sit untouched, people will hate on you. Haters gonna hate regardless.

All the best whatever you decide.....IT'S YOURS
