Basic mock up

34yct90.jpg

starting to get some of the product list together....

so far I know we will have

Front State - db6501
Subwoofers - 2 - 12' Alpine Type R 12D4
Subwoofer Amp - BRX1600.1D or 2000.1D
Front State Amp - BRX6404.4
Secondary Battery - D975

Still not set on the head unit, rather it will be a tablet or double din. There will not be a plexi glass window on the box, I just got lazy doing the mock up. The typhoon logo will just be raised mdf. The box covering/amp rack material hasn't been chosen.

Re: New system in the Typhoon

Looking, and sounding pretty legit. I wish that I still had something with some beat. My last system I had was pretty decent in my '95 Tahoe...2 15" American Bass XD's, American Bass sub amp, Focal front 6.5's, Alpine rear 6.5's, Kicker mid amp, and Kenwood head unit. Maybe I will have some bump again one day.

Re: New system in the Typhoon

if you end up going double din, let me know how that works out... You'll need to get a heat gun to soften up the AC vent tubing and compress it with a 2x4 or something, so the deck isn't sticking out of the dash 1"+. You're also gonna have to come up with a custom bezel or use a dremel to etch out the existing bezel to make it fit.

As much as I like the tablet idea, i don't like it. I like having a remote for the radio and quickly being able to adjust volume, pause, skip songs etc... i see that as more of a pain in the ass with a tablet.

You don't need dash speakers or 6x9's. More speakers is not always better. Unless something has changed, the alpine type R subs are known for just being loud but not necessarily for being musical. I would put more power to a set of separates. 75 x 2 power seperates might be overpowered with subs your planning on using. I was more of SQL guy when I was into car stereo, though.

What your referring to as "front state"...is "front stage". Just so you get the terminology right.

Is Best Buys doing your whole system? With the exception of the amps, which are great by the way, it sounds like a Best Buy system. Not anything necessarily wrong with that but you can do better for the money. I have Alpine but I won't sell them to anyone unless they specifically ask for it and are dead set on it. They have relied on there name for the last several years since being carried by Brand Smart and Best Buys, etc. as opposed to relying on there performance.
For subs, look at RE Audio SEX12D4. 10x better subwoofer and is $139.99 per sub. Cannot be beat. Absolute monsters with really good sound quality. Another great sub to consider is the Massive Audio Kilo 124. Really great sub with glass fiber cone double stitched in surrounds, super high excursion with again, tight sound quality. Same price range about $139.99 per sub. Both will destroy a Type R Alpine sub. Especially being powered by a nice amp like those Hifonics.
Polk makes decent stuff but they do not engineer there own speakers. They buy whatever China has pre-built and put there name on it. Again, Polk=Best Buys. This is exclusively about their car audio stuff...just to be clear!! There home audio stuff is a different animal! The best brands they carry are Polk and Alpine and both have been relying on there names for years since they have a guaranty that they will sell product now. When they were really just carried by local shops they were forced to keep on the cutting edge of technology and make an excellent product. Now they have contracts with big box stores and they slacked off.
Where are the 6.5" going? did you do some special kick panels or mod the doors? Just wondering because I had some ideas about mine but haven't modded anything yet, just upgraded the stock dash location and made a new panel for the rear 6x9" that houses a 6.5" CDT comp set in each. I've been building audio systems for 24 years. Your build looks interesting! Big, but interesting. I have mostly gone the other direction now and build stealth systems that don't take up hardly any room but sound like a big system.

I already have a tablet installed in my Dodge Magnum and I can easily adjust all of those things. I have a separate volume knob installed:

I use JetAudio music player with is a full screen app that has play, pause, etc... My tablet powers on with the car, as well as with other apps with tasker. It all cuts off when the I turn the car off as well.

There is no way in the world that my uncle won't have his 6x9's. I know this from experience. I don't have rear speakers in my cars, but there's no way in the world you can actually tell someone what sounds better. They can hear it for themselves and make a judgement accordingly. He, and 95% of everyone I've ever met, will always want rear speakers. We're not talking about SQ heads in competitions or audiophiles, we're talking about dudes in the hood. Louder is always better.

Front state is a typo, lol. If you read the first post, you'd see that I wrote "stage". I am not new to this...at all. As a member of diymobileaudio, stevemeade, caraudioforums, etc.... I've definitely learned a thing or two while installing basic systems in over 10 cars.

The 6.5's are going in kickpanels made by Q-Logic.

Best Buy? lol. I don't think I've bought anything from there since...wow, my first Rockford Audio amp and Lightning Audio subs about 10 years ago. Apline Type R's are beasts in my opinion. Those RE subs are rated at 600w RMS in comparison to 1,000w from the Type R's, not that they will actually be seeing 1k anyway. For someone to tell me that one brand is supposedly better, I'd have to hear them in the exact same set up, both with boxes built to specs. Otherwise, people are just guessing on something that has too many other variables, ie: car, enclosure, amp, overall install, etc... I know about Sundown, RE Audio, and probably every other car audio brand, although I haven't heard them first hand. I'm not sure if you've heard the newest version of Type R's, but they sound good to me, especially ported. Couple that with the fact that my uncle already has Type R's in two of his other cars and he's happy. I've had them several times before this last box of 3 10" Kicker in my magnum, along with JL Audio and Cerwin Vega:

Re: New system in the Typhoon

LOL, if it was a typo...you wrote it twice:

"Front State - db6501
Subwoofers - 2 - 12' Alpine Type R 12D4
Subwoofer Amp - BRX1600.1D or 2000.1D
Front State Amp - BRX6404.4
Secondary Battery - D975"

...I didn't mean that as a knock to you or anything like that at all, I just wanted you to know so you could correct it.
As for guessing, I actually have owned, used, and installed all of that equipment over the last 25 years....it's not a guess. I don't make judgement on gear I have not heard.
I will say when I am referring to the Type-R, I am referring to generation 4 not the new gen 5 version. I have only heard the new gen 5 and it is nice, this is the one with the new black cone, not the gray previous version. The new one says between 300-1000watts RMS. Go ahead and put a real 1000watts RMS on that sub and see what it does. It has a 2.5" voice coil and while it is vented I am very sure that it will not be a happy sub with 1000watts on it. I love the 3000watt peak rating as well. That is comical. So to recap, Alpine says this sub will handle 300-1000watts RMS with a peak rating of 3000watts. So somewhere between 300watts and 3000watts is there rated power handling?? With an 85db sensitivity rating?? Ok...
This is what I mean when it comes to these companies now like Alpine. They play the general public for a fool! None of those numbers work. That sub, judging by how it is made and of what materials, size of voice coil, etc. would have about the same exact specs as the RE Audio. Actually I would say a bit less maybe since it has a smaller 2.5" voice coil vs. the 3" coil in a RE.

Anyway...your system will sound fine! There is just better stuff for the same money was my only real point. Not that you don't know your stuff or anything like that. I like the design of the enclosure and love the idea you are doing for the raised lettering. I did one like that recently for a customer. That is going to look great! Makes a nice impact at shows and gets people asking questions.
Good luck with your build! Keep us posted with pics!

Re: New system in the Typhoon

Sound like its gonna be loud. I don't know what kind of music you listen to but if you like constant hitting low bass like me and are actually gonna run 2k watts RMS and draw more than 100 amps for extended periods of time you're gonna need a big bad ass alternator or 2 like I plan to run. 2 batteries is definitely a must. I only run a stock alternator and battery right now and it works for my 1200 watt RMS Diamond audio amp and my 300 watt Mids n highs amp. but I have a brand new 220 amp power bastards stock size alternator to add to the mix when I get my Rockford Fosgate BD 2500 cp to run my custom 2300 watt 12" 75 lb sub.

That I definitely agree with. The battery is already in the plans, but I didn't budget for an alternator, nor did he. The potential to run 2,000w is possibly there, but realistically, I'll guessing 1,500w because Hofinoics amps haven't proven to be the most efficient things in the world, especially on stock electrical systems.

As for the other post, if you look at my first post, you'll see, "1-4 ch (75w+ rms range)- front stage dash and kickpanels" . I'm simply going with Alpine because it's been tried and true to me, as well as Kicker and JL Audio, but Alpine is usually much cheaper.

For my uncles sake, I'm hoping he doesn't do anything to this truck, audio wise, until it's running in stock condition again. Everything engine and suspension wise should be the top priority...and getting some new wheels for goodness sake. But we'll see...

Re: New system in the Typhoon

well, he ditched the tablet plan and decided to go with a standard double din, so ordered the Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS . It's received great reviews all over the web and I went to a local car audio shop to make sure it did what he needed and it passed with flying colors. As for how we're going to make it fit (not his car just example pics)....
