Re: New system in the Typhoon
As much as I like the tablet idea, i don't like it. I like having a remote for the radio and quickly being able to adjust volume, pause, skip songs etc... i see that as more of a pain in the ass with a tablet.
I already have a tablet installed in my Dodge Magnum and I can easily adjust all of those things. I have a separate volume knob installed:
I use JetAudio music player with is a full screen app that has play, pause, etc... My tablet powers on with the car, as well as with other apps with tasker. It all cuts off when the I turn the car off as well.
You don't need dash speakers or 6x9's. More speakers is not always better. Unless something has changed, the alpine type R subs are known for just being loud but not necessarily for being musical. I would put more power to a set of separates. 75 x 2 power seperates might be overpowered with subs your planning on using. I was more of SQL guy when I was into car stereo, though.
There is no way in the world that my uncle won't have his 6x9's. I know this from experience. I don't have rear speakers in my cars, but there's no way in the world you can actually tell someone what sounds better. They can hear it for themselves and make a judgement accordingly. He, and 95% of everyone I've ever met, will always want rear speakers. We're not talking about SQ heads in competitions or audiophiles, we're talking about dudes in the hood. Louder is always better.
What your referring to as "front state"...is "front stage". Just so you get the terminology right.
Is Best Buys doing your whole system? With the exception of the amps, which are great by the way, it sounds like a Best Buy system. Not anything necessarily wrong with that but you can do better for the money. I have Alpine but I won't sell them to anyone unless they specifically ask for it and are dead set on it. They have relied on there name for the last several years since being carried by Brand Smart and Best Buys, etc. as opposed to relying on there performance.
For subs, look at RE Audio SEX12D4. 10x better subwoofer and is $139.99 per sub. Cannot be beat. Absolute monsters with really good sound quality. Another great sub to consider is the Massive Audio Kilo 124. Really great sub with glass fiber cone double stitched in surrounds, super high excursion with again, tight sound quality. Same price range about $139.99 per sub. Both will destroy a Type R Alpine sub. Especially being powered by a nice amp like those Hifonics.
Polk makes decent stuff but they do not engineer there own speakers. They buy whatever China has pre-built and put there name on it. Again, Polk=Best Buys. This is exclusively about their car audio stuff...just to be clear!! There home audio stuff is a different animal! The best brands they carry are Polk and Alpine and both have been relying on there names for years since they have a guaranty that they will sell product now. When they were really just carried by local shops they were forced to keep on the cutting edge of technology and make an excellent product. Now they have contracts with big box stores and they slacked off.
Where are the 6.5" going? did you do some special kick panels or mod the doors? Just wondering because I had some ideas about mine but haven't modded anything yet, just upgraded the stock dash location and made a new panel for the rear 6x9" that houses a 6.5" CDT comp set in each. I've been building audio systems for 24 years. Your build looks interesting! Big, but interesting. I have mostly gone the other direction now and build stealth systems that don't take up hardly any room but sound like a big system.
Front state is a typo, lol. If you read the first post, you'd see that I wrote "stage". I am not new to this...at all. As a member of diymobileaudio, stevemeade, caraudioforums, etc.... I've definitely learned a thing or two while installing basic systems in over 10 cars.
The 6.5's are going in kickpanels made by Q-Logic.
Best Buy? lol. I don't think I've bought anything from there since...wow, my first Rockford Audio amp and Lightning Audio subs about 10 years ago. Apline Type R's are beasts in my opinion. Those RE subs are rated at 600w RMS in comparison to 1,000w from the Type R's, not that they will actually be seeing 1k anyway. For someone to tell me that one brand is supposedly better, I'd have to hear them in the exact same set up, both with boxes built to specs. Otherwise, people are just guessing on something that has too many other variables, ie: car, enclosure, amp, overall install, etc... I know about Sundown, RE Audio, and probably every other car audio brand, although I haven't heard them first hand. I'm not sure if you've heard the newest version of Type R's, but they sound good to me, especially ported. Couple that with the fact that my uncle already has Type R's in two of his other cars and he's happy. I've had them several times before this last box of 3 10" Kicker in my magnum, along with JL Audio and Cerwin Vega:
