Racetronix Fuel Pump Harness Mini HowTo

I was going to take pics and do a HowTo when I put in the Walbro and Racetronix harness, but I was in a hurry and it ended up being even easier than I thought. The hardest part was the bed removal. I don't envy you Ty guys at all... Just a warning, this is done from memory. I'm not really getting into the specifics, so everything should be fine, but let me know if I slip up anywhere.

Once you have access to the top of the fuel tank, unplug the stock wiring harness from the fuel pump sending unit. Connect the male and female plugs on the harness (1) between the stock plugs.

Mount the relay and ground terminal (2) securely. I was able to mount the relay right next to the gas tank on top of the frame rail where it dips back down, using the ground bolt.

Run the split-loomed heavier wire (3) in the frame rail up to the front of the truck. Follow other wires and avoid moving or hot parts. Secure the wire with the included zipties.

Secure the weatherpack fuse holder (4) using the included long alternator mounting stud or with zipties.

Install the power ring terminal (5) on the alternator output post.

You're done! Now the stock wiring connects through the Racetronix PnP connector to the relay. It flips the relay, which takes the power from the heavier wire and feeds it to the pump via the harness' other PnP connector. The stock wiring still turns on the power to the fuel pump, so you don't have to mess with anything there. The pump is getting its power right from the alternator, so it should be getting higher voltage (meaning more output), and you're also reducing the load on the stock wiring (people often have to upgrade to a bigger fuse when running a Walbro with the stock wiring).

So what is your over all opinion of the racetranix harness?

The quality looks to be awesome and I didnt read one negative thing in your install.

Can't wait to get mine, i already have a walbro, but I have to redo EVERYTHING!!!

I don't really have one. =)

It's basically just heavy wire with a ring terminal running to a relay and a couple weatherpak connectors, with split loom on the wire. Not really much to it, but it was quite professional-looking. It also came with the ground wire upgrade and two battery terminals, which was nice. I'm not sure where you're "supposed" to run that ground wire, but the only place mine would reach was the coolant overflow tank bolt...

I had heard of people having to upgrade the fuse with the Walbro. It's the ECMB fuse, I believe. Anyway, with all the electrical problems I've heard of (as extreme as the ECM needing to be hotwired), I didn't want to mess with putting more stress on the factory wiring. I don't ever want to have to get in there again, so I figured hotwiring the pump was the best way to go, especially since it's all PnP.

I still have the stock regulator, chip, intake, and exhaust, so I really can't say if it helped performance at all. Now I'm not worried about the FPR ever running out of fuel though... Just seemed like the right way to do things, rather than rigging up something "acceptable".

I just got my kit in the mail yesterday... It does look fairly simple, not expecting any big gains, just figured while in down there I might as well do it.

just did the same pump and harness on my ty, merk right, removing tthe bumper is a must, i also used gasket material cut into 2" strip for vibration material between tank and straps as they are no longer available from gm. nothing more irratating than a squeky tank. install nery straight forwars and excellent workmanship on the harness.

Just got mine. Will install as soon as I feel up to it and have help. Looks simple enough, and high quality.

can't you cut strips of rubber from an intertube from a tire?

and what's up with pulling the bed on the sy's? wouldn't it be easier to just drip the tank?

have you ever tried replacing a fuel pump on a sy? i've done it both ways and taking the bed off is by far much easier. no having to cram your fingers in a tight space, balancing a tank full of fuel, possibilty of bending the fuel feed or return lines.

Re: Racetronix Fuel Pump Harness Mini HowTo

I will be doing the new fuel pump and harness (Walbro and Racetronix) to my SY eventually and was looking for a "how-to" on this. I found this thread but the link CANADIAN had in here no longer shows the pictures of the install. I need visuals. Does anyone have something they can post up with pictures showing the steps?

CANADIAN - do you still have your pictures?

Thanks guys.

Re: Racetronix Fuel Pump Harness Mini HowTo

it's not terrible. instead of removing the bumper i took off the rear driver's tire and substituted longer bolts for the fuel tank lower straps one at a time. the longer bolts will give you more room to work as the tank will "hang" lower while you disconnect the fuel lines. useful for install too
