Rear Sways

Rear Sways

To my knowledge, the two makers of the rear sways for the SyTy's R ST (Suspens Tech.) and Addco.

I have the ST and like it. The Addco had earlier problems, I have heard, but supposedly they may have solved them.

What does the Rear Sway Bar really do? Anyone wanna rave about it for me to convince me to get it ? :) Will it help my Drag Racing or is this only a Road Course kinda thing?

The rear sway bar is the best and easiest handling mod you can make for your truck. I think Suspension Techniques merged with Beltech. I guess the ST sway bar could help to slightly reduce wheel hop, but for everyday driving and roadcourse, it will help big time.

Sway bars reduce body roll.... So if you're in an area with a lot of twisties or turns a rear sway bar is good option for enhanced control of your vehicle ...

Suspension Techniques is owned by Belltech and has been for about 7 years now. Both companies sway bars are made on the same machine. The Belltech part number for the TY is #5524 and the SY is #5520. We have a front sway bar in the works using my Ty as the test vehicle. I will let everyone know when it's ready along with all the specs. I will also set up a group purchase for those that want one.

Eric with Belltech,

You might want to consider making a front sway bar for the Sy/Ty's using the lower swingarms from the '96 up 4x4 S10 Blazers & trucks, as they have a FAR SUPERIOR mounting method for the end of the sway bar (they use connector links similar to the 2WD models, with the links attached to tabs welded on the front side of the lower swingarm). The stock Sy/Ty type that bolts to the underside of the lower swingarm is NOT a very good method, and is tough to get mounted up alot of the time!! Also, the stock front sway bar on the '96 up 4x4 models is already a larger bar that is 33mm (1.3") diameter in size (the stock Ty bar is 32mm or 1.25" in diameter, and the Sy has a 1.125" diameter bar as I recall), which gives a great improvement in handling on the Syclone, and a slight improvement on the Typhoon.

Also, a note to all of you St/Ty guys, all late model S10 Blazers (and also Extreme model trucks) use the same rear sway bar that is 23mm (0.9") in diameter, and they are a bolt-on to ANY S10 (including Sy/Ty's). The connector links and frame brackets are bolt-on items on the Extreme S10 truck, but the Blazer frame brackets are welded on (and the connector links are longer than the truck versions). To mount this rear bar on a Typhoon only requires that 1/4" steel plate tabs be welded on the Ty's frame. The Syclone, on the other hand, can use the entire hardware from an Extreme model S10, with only three holes on either side needed to be drilled in the frame to mount the brackets!!

These sway bars can be bought at the wrecking yards for a fairly low cost for any of you that want a larger front bar and a rear sway bar.

Thanks for the input. The early C-10 had the same style of mount and we designed an end link style kit for that also. We will look at all options. Hopefully we can have a bar done soon!

What, if any, modifications are needed to mount a rear sway bar?
none, it should bolt right up. I havent installed mine yet but from the looks of it it shouldnt be all that difficult.

Hi Eric :) .. Happy to say that I've been pleased with my ST sway bar for the past 3 years on my Syclone.. Was considering the possibility of the Belltech 3" drop springs for S-series trucks(2" on sytys) however there were some concerns that I had...

1. By dropping the springs 2" you effectively close shock travel by 2"... Does belltech offer a stock monotube shock comparible to the stock non air ride bilstein's? If so how well do these shocks hold up under incliment weather.. (snow, ice, rain) ..? cost?

2. I also noticed your mentioning of a payload assist setup for the previous drop that was in development.. How much weight would you be able to carry with this modification in addition to the 2" drop springs?

3. By dropping the rear 2" with drop springs what if any modifications would be needed for proper steering alignment specs without wear.. Not very sure if anything would be effected but I'd feel better asking..

Appreciate any responses you can give.. Don't plan on using the sy for a daily driver much more than another year and was curious what sort of future suspension mods I might make...

Thanks again for your time...

On a syclone you might need to drill a hole on the driver side frame from what I recall.. that's about all i can remember ... otherwise the kit is very nice and straightforward ;)

I would like to know this also as I am considering the springs for my Ty!

FYI

I've got a Hellwig rear sway bar on my Sy but It'll only fit up good, without interference if ya have a single 3" exhaust 'cuz it's how mine fit up.
It has U-bolts which attach the bar to the rear-end's tubing on either side of the center/diff. It sits ABOVE the rear and the brackets for the end links(with polyurethane bushings) bolt up/clamp to the left/right sides of chassis. Truck tracks real nice w/ *almost* no roll in the rear. No noise and nothing ever loosened up yet after 7 years.

I too am considering this for my Ty as well...I have the ST rear swaybar installed on my truck too and I love it. Between the ST rear bar, and the energy suspension body mounts and bushings they truck handles awsome very little roll. All i need now is a good set of shocks and drop it a bit.

1)Belltech does offer a mono-tube shock it's called "Nitro Active". It's made for us by KYB to our specs. It has a 5 year warranty. I have tried the Active and KYB Mono Max and like them both but right now I am using the Mono Max. They are a little firmer. The Nitro Active part numbers are #10003 for the front and #10503 for the rear.
2)The mini air bag kit is part #5098. We just started shipping them this week. The bags together can carry up to 3000 lbs but (do not exceed your vehicles factory capabilities.) I know you wouldn't do that but you would be surprised at how many people put on air bags thinking now they have a 10 ton truck.
3)You shouldn't have to do anything to the alignment if you are just lowering the rear.
4)Make note that the ST/BT bar mounts below the rear axle. I have a 3" Borla exhaust that clears just fine.

I have the addco on my Ty and agree it made a huge improvement in handling.

ATR now makes an "Ultimate Typhoon Sway Bar". You can find it at Rick Krupa's site RKKustom.com, click on typhoon then on ATR catalog.

It looks plenty beefy. Don't see one for the Sy, though.
