Re: RPM Front Coilover Set-Up Installed! More Pics!!!!

I just snugged mine up with a little tension, had the rear de arched 2 1/2". With the stock size rim and tire the front measurment from the ground to the bottom of the cladding is 26 1/2" and the back 26 7/8" on my SY. Have to stop at all speed bumps otherwise the tranny will hit. The ride is a little soft in back with the stock shock (have to find something else). But my back do bottom out on occasion but with the rear bump stops about 1 1/2" from the axle, I estimate the cladding to be 1" from the tire when the rear shock is compressed when the bump stop hits the axle.. Static height of rear 2 3/8" above the tire. The tranny crossmember will hit(not the tranny).

Yea i had same problem with my Typhoon. I bought the QA1 but not the ones you see on everyones website because they are for stock height trucks and will be compressed too much. I took my Shock off and measured a to b and then went on Qa1 website to find the right length shock to fit it. My bilstein were compressed way too much.

You can adjust ride height with the springs but there is a rule about how much tension you can put on the coil spring, reason why their are diffrent length and wieght classes. I had pro set-up mine and where it sits is the amount of tension he puts, the truck is very stiff in the front and if we tighten it up more then it would only get stiffer.

How tight am I supposed to adjust the control arm bolts? The new upper and lower control arms are difficult to move by hand with the bolts tightened all the way down. I lubricated everything liberally with ES suspension poly lube. Wonder if I should back the nuts out some?

Do they move up and down freely or do they seem to bind!!

My suspension shop who did the alignment said i left mine too lose and they tightened but said you want to be able to move up and down with little effort.

I can move them, but not easily. I guess I'll back the nuts out slowly until they go up and down freely. I always thought the top ones should be very tight so the alignment doesn't go out-of-spec?

The poly bushings bind at first, but there should be a little tension. I was always told by my mechanic friends that you should tighten the control arm bolts when the truck is on the ground. The bushings bind up too much I guess if you tighten them with the arms hanging. It will be a little difficult to move them anyways because the poly bushings are a tight fit. I got it all together and drove it and it felt fine. The suspension was articulating just like it was supposed to.

Does anyone have part numbers and a source for the Edelbrock tie rods? Those look real nice.

I just ground down the head of the bolt. Bought a napa camber kit and compared the head thickness of the napa item was thinner than the stock bolt, but like I said I already ground down the head of the stock bolt. Sent "hide" and email for the MB nuber but never got a reply.

Thanks Rick. Do you know if Napa or Pep Boys carry Moog outer tie rods for our trucks? I stripped the nut off one of my PST tie rods, even though there's nothing else wrong with it. I will order those Edelbrock adjusters, thanks for the link.
You can get them from Kragen, however they have to be ordered.

Re: RPM Front Coilover Set-Up Installed! More Pics!!!!

After cutting, grinding and hammering for several days, I finally got the coil-over kit fully installed. There is no metal-on-metal contact with the suspension fully extended or compressed on both sides or the wheels cranked either direction. It is a VERY tight fit, though and this was not a simple project.

I do have a problem, however. The springs are making contact with the rubber CV boots. It's worse with the suspension fully extended and more serious on the passenger side. The paint from the spring is actually rubbing off on the boot. This is from me simply turning the rotors by hand. I was thinking of either eliminating the 2" spacers or cutting the adjustment rings some, but not sure if that will help. I'm not sure if anyone else has had this issue, but I could some help here.

One last note. The shock body interferes with the lower control arm just above the lower bolt. I used a Dremel and trimmed off some the lower control arm bolt/bracket to gain the necessary clearance. You can see this in the pic.

I will get underneath my truck and take a look later, but I do not recall the CV boot touching the spring. Let me see what I can find.

Cool, I would appreciate that. As far as I know, these are the original CV axles. Not sure WTF is going on here, but I refuse to drive it like this.

Re: RPM Front Coilover Set-Up Installed! More Pics!!!!

yea.
You need to put the spacer on the botttom of the spring. I didn't have any issue with them contacting the cv boost and mine were brand new axles.

Maybe they need to be adjusted up higher and then they would miss. What the ride height at right now.

Re: RPM Front Coilover Set-Up Installed! More Pics!!!!

I don't see how flipping the shocks is going to help. The spring is the same diameter either way and the distance from the end would be about the same. The only thing I could think of was doing away with the 2" spacers completely to move the spring up past the boot, but then my truck will be slammed on the ground. Maybe I need to cut the CV boots off and find some lower profile replacement boots?

Re: RPM Front Coilover Set-Up Installed! More Pics!!!!

I looked at mine and it wasn't touching the boot. You might gain clearance by putting the spacer underneath the spring like VisciousV6 said. So technically you aren't flipping the shocks. You are just changing the location of the spacer while the adjuster portion of the shock stays on the bottom. That's what I did and the CV boot isn't touching it. Maybe when the spring compresses, the coils grab the boot. If the spacer was right there, that wouldn't happen.

What a Fuster Cluck.

It looks like the spring will rub on the shock tower if you move the spacer from the top to the bottom.
