Searching for an Idle.

Aeroking

e.i.
I have searched, and read all the 101 posts.

I took my upper/lower intake off to clean, and paint them. I put everything back together, and started it up.

I set the distributor back to where i had it before my tear down.

But when i start it up... It seems like its searching for an idle rpm.

When i put the dist. back in, and adjusted it until the truck started and stayed running (with the tan wire unplugged).

I'm trying to check the timing with a light, but the RPMs jump from 900 to 1300, and everywhere in between. It changes every few seconds. I tried adjusting my AFPR, but an 1/8th turn in either direction stalls the motor out.

Currently:
-Brand new plugs gapped to 35. (put plugs in and started ran motor for 2 days, before i took the intake off)
-Traced the plug wires, they're in the correct firing order.
-my 10n1 chip is in the STK set.
-Engines getting fuel, and spark
-all my grounds and fuses are good.
-no vacuum leaks, that i can find (and i did use copper sealant on the intake)

Any ideas on how to get my truck to idle smoothly?

Re: Searching for an Idle.

To reset the IAC:
With the engine warmed up and the truck shut off, jumper the 2 top right ports on the ALDL.Turn the key to on (you should hear the IAC spinning.)Wait 30 seconds, then turn the key off.Remove the jumper.Pull the ECMB fuse out then put it back in.Start the truck. It should find it's own idle.

do thjis with the tan wire plugged, or unplgged?
Plugged in.This has nothing to do with timing.

This is the procedure to reset the Idle Air Controller.

It may fix the hunting idle.

Re: Searching for an Idle.

If you add just a touch of throttle does run smooth? Still sounds like a vac leak. Did you remember to connect the small hose on the bottom of the throttle body? Also the one at the back of the manifold to the FP reg?:2cents:

should this be done after installing a new IAC?

replaced and reset it,still idles like poo(new ur6's,wires,C&R)
Also there is a big ass vac port on the back of the TB that should be blocked off.

Do you have a real boost gauge? If so,what is the vacuum @ idle?
What is your FP set at?

I'll go with a vacuum leak too... Look and listen closely, they are hard to find

the port under the one that goes to the pvc?

no boost gauge  the truck is pretty much stock besides a egr plate and a 300+ ignition box

it will idle nice for a couple mins then it goes to shit :dunno:

lines are new with no hint of dry rot.checked all connections=ok

the port above the one that goes to the pvc is blocked the one beneath is not.

So Aeroking find anything yet??

i had the truck up in the air to change the starter (went bad on me)

while i was under there, i decided to scrape the undercoating off and paint the reachable sections of the frame.

and yesterday i got back to getting the truck to run.

and well....

without the IAC (new) plugged in, the truck idles pretty smooth, but it idles at 2k rpms

i used this oppurtunity to check the timing (tan wire disconnected) to see if i was close, and i was fairly close (to 0)

so i shut it down, and plugged the tan wire back in, and proceded to reset the IAC, which worked, i guess?

i am sitting here now it ran for about a minute (i guess it was finding its idle)... and it just bumped to a stop now.

no vaccum leaks (that i've found), my chip is set in the STK setting.

the engine runs, it still jumps all over the place in rpms, and then usually bumps to a stop.

any ideas?

and now, 5 minutes later, it wont run at all. the starter cranks, and the motor starts and turns about 3 times, then stops.

i'm gonna pull a plug tonight to see if its fouled, although they're brand new.

Re: Searching for an Idle.

just stepped outta the shower and it hit me.

i have my cruise control module removed for clearance around the engine while i'm working, theres where my vacuum leak is.

haha, i'm going to test it right now.

Re: Searching for an Idle.

well, that wasnt it, i have a pencil jammed in the vacuum line so i doesnt leak.

i repeated the whole process of rebooting the IAC, and this time, i pulled the fuse on the ECM to reboot it, and it still turns over 3-4 times, and stops.

it runs fine, till i plug the tan wire back in, then it wont start.

Re: Searching for an Idle.

it REALLY sounds like a vacuum leak to me....have you tried the intertube trick? with the engine of you will probably find your leak.......
